Koru Team Blog: Term 2 Week 2 (9/05/2025)

 Kia ora e te whānau,

Welcome to this week's Koru Blog!

Book Character Dress Up Day: Friday 16th May
As part of our Readathon, we are excited to have a Book Character Dress Up Day on Friday, 16th May. All children are invited to come dressed as a book character, or if they prefer, to come in their usual school uniform. We can't wait to see all of the fabulous book character costumes- they can be as little or as big as you can make, find or create!!

Cross Country: Friday 23rd May
Our whole school cross country event will be on Friday, the 23rd of May. There will be more information to come about what time our Koru children will be running. Tamariki will be able to wear their house tops for this event. We are training most days for the Cross Country, so it is helpful for the children to wear comfortable running shoes. Our race will be between 11.30am and 12.00pm. The first race is the Year 8 runners, which will start at 11:00am, and the whole event should be finished by 12:00pm. See below for a map of where our Koru children will be running.

Literacy:
Our Koru children need to bring their Literacy Folders back to school EVERY day and put them into their group box in the hub. When the children learn a new letter, this will be added to their 'sound pack' of flash cards. When a literacy group has read a book a few times together, they are ready to take it home to read. If a child does not have their folder at school, we unfortunately cannot give them the book to take home, as each reading book costs $9 and we need to look after them by keeping them in literacy folders and returning them to school.

Phonemic Awareness Instruction
We are learning to blend words. We use the left hand to say the first word, the right hand to say the second word, and then clap our hands together when we say the compound word. eg. out - side, outside

'out'

'side'

'outside'

We are learning to segment words. The teacher says the compound word and place both hands together with palms up. Students repeat the word and then segment into two words, by separating their hands. eg. raincoat, rain - coat.

'raincoat'

'rain'

'coat'

Literacy Group Lessons
Each lesson covers revision about letter sounds (phonemes) and Heart Words that the children have already been taught. This helps to increase confidence and knowledge of the letters to know their sound when reading and how to write them. As the children work through the Stage 1 sounds (m, s, a, i, f, t, p, c), they learn the name of the letter, the sound (phoneme) and how to write it (grapheme) and read it. Before being given a book, they need to know the first 8 letters and the sounds they represent, as well as the skills of segmenting and blending sounds. This is to ensure success and accurate reading, rather than guessing.
Writing a list of Heart Words

Literacy group lesson time! Writing heart words: I, my, the.

We read sentences and then write them. We check that they start with a capital letter and end with punctuation, and we read them back to ourselves to check that they make sense. Can you see a Heart Word? Does it finish with a full stop or a question mark?

Reading back the sentence together.

Here is Milo the Monkey, the letter 'm' makes the sound /m/. What do your lips do to make this sound?

Listening to a sound and writing the grapheme for it.

Writing the first 8 letter sounds.

It takes lots of concentration and practice to learn how to make our letters the right way!

Cybersafety
The HDCA for Parents and Whānau

The Harmful Digital Communications Act (or HDCA for short) is an act passed by the Government back in 2015 to help people dealing with serious or repeated harmful digital communications. It covers anything digital like text, emails or social media content.

The most useful thing for parents to understand about the HDCA is the way the 10 communication principles define what is good or bad behaviour online.

Kahikatea Team News: Term 2, Week 1

 Kia ora whānau

Welcome back to Term 2! We have had a lovely first week back, hearing all about the holiday break and reconnecting with our tamariki. The Kahikatea kids have coped really well with being inside all day due to the wet and wild weather.

Welcome Nicky!

A big welcome to Nicky Dunlop who joins our team as our release cover teacher. Nicky has worked at Beckenham te Kura for a long time, mostly in the Y7 and 8 team. She is very excited to be joining the Kahikatea crew. Nicky will cover Sarah's team leader release all day on Tuesdays and she will cover Amber and Talia's release alternating Thursdays. Nicky is super creative and loves arts and crafts and is keen to implement a visual art afternoon once a week for our kids!

We would also like to welcome six new students who have started: Zheng Quan Yeow and Evelyn Lewis have joined Sarah's homgroup. Bhavjot Singh and Maliah Lloyd in Amber's homgroup and Erin Bannister and Ahaan Syam are now in Talia's homegroup. Welcome to Beckenham te Kura.

Fun fractions!
For the next couple of weeks our Mathematics focus is on Number, in particular fractions. Students have been learning about fair and equal sharing and how objects can be divided into parts if needed. They have been learning the symbols for different fractions-ask them about halves, quarters, thirds and fifths! They know that a fraction is part of a whole and that the numerator (top number) tells us how many and the denominator (bottom) tells us how many parts it is divided into. For example 1/3 is saying "one piece out of 3 pieces".
We have been working through some pretty tricky problems involving kiwi birds sharing worms.

Clothing:
A reminder to please make sure all jumpers and wet weather jackets are clearly named. We are asking children to keep their jackets in their bags/cubbies. Jumpers come off when we are inside during the day and get put into tubs.

Cross Country:
When the weather clears we will continue to have daily practice for our whole school cross country coming up on Friday 29th May. Please ensure your children are coming to school with appropriate footwear to be able to run.

Parent Helpers Wanted!
Are there any parents who would love to come in and sort through our hub dress-up costumes. Some need throwing, some need washing and they all need sorting. There are about 5 boxes of them. We probably need 2-3 adults to sort and cull and some to take home a bag and wash.
If you are keen to help, please email sarah.junghenn@beckenham.school.nz.
Thanks to all of the parents who indicated they would like to help with our Ferrymead trip. We are working through groups, etc and will be in touch next week to let you know the details.

Winter Sport: If you are keen to help out on Thursday afternoons with the Year 5-8 winter sports rotation please let Hugo Weaver know. The sports on offer are: Hockey, Netball, Football and Flag football (NFL). If you are able to support the running of any of these, please email Hugo below.

Koru Team Blog – Term 2 Week 1

Kia ora e te whānau,

A very warm welcome back to school for Term 2! It has been a wonderful and wet start to the term with a lot of time spent indoors!

Our School Values

At Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto we have five school values:

  • We Care - Arohaina te tāngata me te taio

  • We Get There Together - Mā tatou te waka e hoe

  • We Love Learning - He taonga te ako

  • We Love Challenge - Nau mai te wero

  • We Make a Difference - Nā matou he rerekē te ao

This week, we have focused on our values of 'We Care' and 'We Make a Difference' to ensure that we all have happy days at school. Ngā tamariki have been amazing, showing inclusion, kindness, and consideration towards each other.

Our School Values

Our word of the week is upstander. An upstander is someone who speaks or acts in support of someone who is being mistreated. A fun way to learn about this was to go on an adventure with Oat the Goat. Feel free to let your child show you Oat the Goat's journey. Here is the link.

Concept-Based Curriculum (Inquiry)

Our school-wide concept-based curriculum focus this year is change. During Term 2, we are learning about change in Science.

This week, we learnt that adding ingredients creates change (structure, texture, colour and taste). Our first experiment involved children measuring ingredients to make milk. We then added vinegar to see what would happen. We noticed that the texture changed, and then the milk curdled. Ew!

Here were some of the hypotheses that children came up with before doing the experiment:

"The milk powder will change the colour." - Isla

"The water will go higher when the powder is added." - Frankie

"The water might turn purple." - Mohamed

"Adding vinegar might change the water's colour." - Beau

"There will be an explosion." - Jasper

We hope you have a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing you next week.

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

We hope you had the opportunity to spend some quality time with your children over the holiday break. Our staff have had a restful break and have returned re-energised, looking forward to reconnecting with each other and our students.

Mid - Year Reporting

As you may be aware, our teachers are currently transitioning their practices to align with the refreshed Mathematics and English curricula. They have demonstrated strong commitment and a constructive approach throughout this process.

One challenge we are facing is that consistent approaches to assessment for the refreshed curricula are still being developed and will, we hope, be shared with us by the Ministry of Education in the near future. This creates some uncertainty around how we might best report to whānau about student progress at mid-year.

Our interim plan is to report progress in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics through:
  • Two recent achievements in meeting curriculum expectations
  • A next step toward meeting a curriculum expectation
In addition, your child will receive one learning post showcasing progress in other curriculum areas, along with a general comment outlining your child’s demonstration of our school values and participation in learning during the first half of the school year.

Following the distribution of reports this term, we will be holding learning conferences. Details about how to book these will be shared soon.

Attendance

As part of your child’s mid-year report, you will also receive information about their attendance.

Regular attendance at school plays an important role in your child’s success. There is a strong link between attending school consistently and achieving positive outcomes in the classroom. Supporting student attendance and engagement is a shared responsibility between families and schools.

As a parent or guardian, you're encouraged to help ensure your child attends school each day. If your child needs to be away for any reason, please contact us as soon as possible. It’s important to confirm your child’s absence and share the reason. You can do this through the following communication channels:
Phone: (03) 337-1404 (Press 1 to leave an absence message)
Email: office@beckenham.school.nz
Text: 02102794107

We understand that there are times when students may need to be away from school, and we recognise that each family’s situation is unique. That said, regular attendance helps your child stay connected to learning and peers, and prolonged or frequent absences can make it harder for them to keep up.

If your child is often absent or away for an extended period, we may reach out to discuss how we can work together to support their attendance and learning.

We are here to help. If you're experiencing challenges getting your child to school, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

We’ll work with you to develop a support plan that helps address any barriers to regular attendance.

More information on attendance, including your rights and responsibilities as parents or caregivers, is available on the Ministry of Education’s webpage: Attendance

Building Work

Work on the Kōmanawa block and the building used for the PTA Uniform Shop has progressed well over the school holidays. The renovation of the PTA Uniform Room building was completed today.

We are currently awaiting the delivery of new windows and doors for the Kōmanawa block. Once these have arrived, the remaining work will be completed. The projected completion date is around the middle of the school term.

Readathon

Today marks the start of our PTA’s first fundraising initiative of the year!
Your child will be bringing home information about the Readathon, an exciting event that encourages a love of reading while helping to raise vital funds for our school.

We kindly ask for your support with this fundraising effort. The money raised by the PTA plays a crucial role in helping us provide opportunities and resources that would not be possible without this additional income.

The Readathon will conclude with our much-anticipated Book Character Day on Friday, 16 May.

Ngā mihi,

Cade Englefield

Staff Profiles

Hi, my name is Vivienne.  I have lived in Christchurch for the last 30 years.  I have three children and  eight grandchildren.  I enjoy reading,  doing jigsaw puzzles and cooking.  I am really looking forward to spending a lot of my time working with the children who are here at Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto.

Parking and driver care on Sandwich Road

We know that everyone is keen to keep our children safe as they travel to and from school. To support this, please can drivers NOT try to undertake U-turns on Sandwich Road during the pick-up and drop-off times. We have witnessed some near misses recently and, ultimately, it is our children who are being put at risk.

Please also remember that the 3 min zone on the school side of Sandwich Road is MAX 3mins - not time enough for you to get out of your car and go into school to drop off or collect your child. If everyone can use this area as a drop-off/pick-up point, then all of the traffic will flow more smoothly.

Additionally, to keep everyone safe when arriving and leaving school, please do not walk through the staff car park. This area is for staff cars, taxis, and accessibility parking only.

Offsite Learning Agreements

We are updating our records to reflect the number of children who regularly attend Offsite learning opportunities. Could you please confirm if your child is taking part in any offsite activities by picking up an offsite learning agreement from the Office.  This will then be filled out by you, signed, and returned to school so Cade is able to review and sign these off. This process is a requirement from the Ministry of Education and helps inform our attendance data for your child.

Garden Club

Here are some more gardening club photos from Last Term. The black construction is a vege pod which we won through Quizzle!  Amazing!
Thanks Lucy for supporting our wonderful tamariki and helping our outdoor spaces to look so beautiful.

Kupu Māori o te Wīki

This is our Whakataukī (phrase), Kīwaha (saying), and Kupu (word) for the week. Give it a go! Remember, Nau mai te wero, We Love Challenge!

Whakataukī: He rā whatiwhati kō - This means a day of hard work.

Kīwaha: Ka mau te wehi! - this means That’s amazing!

Kupu: Nui - this means big.

If you are unsure of the pronunciation of a word, have a look at Te Aka (the Māori dictionary) where you can hear how the word is spoken correctly.

ESOL News

The Community Partnership team arm of the Ministry of Education organises a webinar for ethnic communities which offers a closer look at an aspect of education in New Zealand.

The Term 2 webinar is 'Navigating NCEA: Literacy, Numeracy, and Your Pathway to Tertiary Study'.

We are helping to spread the word by sharing the registration link with families and community groups that could benefit from this kōrero.

Monday 19 May, from 6:00pm- 7:30pm: Register here

Joseph Houghton from the Ministry will lead the discussion around navigating NCEA.

Food Allergy Guidelines

Across our school, we have a number of children with different food allergies.

To support the wellbeing of these students we have the following guidelines in place which we ask you to follow:
  • All students should only eat lunches and snacks that have been provided by their caregivers.
  • Bottles, other drinks, and lunch boxes provided by caregivers should be clearly labelled with the name of their child.  Home group teachers and caregivers will decide where the children’s bottles and lunch boxes will be kept during the day to ensure no cross contamination occurs.
  • Parents are asked not to bring food into school to be shared with other children.  Whilst we understand that there are times you want to celebrate special events for your children with their friends at school, e.g. birthdays or being awarded prizes, by bringing food and treats for them to share, we have a policy of children only eating the food that their whānau have prepared and sent with them.  We have a number of students with food allergies and also need to respect the wishes of some families who want to monitor what their children are eating and prefer their children just to eat food they have prepared. From time to time, there may be an event that teachers have organised that will involve food (cultural or learning activities) and they will have advised families in advance that this will be happening.
  • At the beginning of each year caregivers will need to check the expiry dates on any medication to be held at school.
  • On the first day of school, caregivers will need to bring their child’s medication to the school office.  Caregivers will need to sign a medicine authority form (School Docs).  The responsibility of monitoring the expiry dates of medications rests with the parent.
  • Caregivers may be asked to come and talk to staff about their child’s specific health needs and ways we can support them at school.
We will inform you during the year if specific guidelines for your child’s hub change.

Our full allergy policy and guidelines are available on the Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto website under Information - Policies - SchoolDocs, then search ‘allergy’.
Enter the username (beckenham) and password (pride).

If you have any questions or concerns, please discuss them in the first instance with your child’s home group teacher.

Koru Team Blog: Term 1 Week 11 (11/04/2025)

Kia ora e te whānau,

Wow, we have made it to the end of our first term for 2025! We would love to say a massive 'thank you' to all our tamariki and whānau for showing our school value 'We Get There Together - Mā tātou katoa te waka e hoe'.

Here are a few things our children have loved about being in the Koru team:

"I like playing with the Lego and drawing."

"I am showing We Care by listening to others."

"I love sitting at the yellow jellybean table for Literacy and learning new letter sounds."

"I love making new friends."

"I like learning."

"I like drawing with my friends."

"I like playing on the car mat with special cars."

"I like our teachers."

"I like going to Treemendous and the Junior Playground at Little Play and Big Play."

House Groups:
Our Koru children have been allocated a 'House Group' to belong to: Fisher, Heathcote, Tennyson and Waimea. Children from the same family/whānau are put into the same house. Each house group has it's own chant and tamariki learn this so they can participate in the house chant at sports and special events, and in Celebration Assemblies if their house has won the house points for the fortnight. You can find the House Chants here, and there are also videos that you can share with your child to help them learn their house chant. Each house has its own colour, and there are House Shirts that are an optional part of the school uniform, that can be purchased and worn on Fridays, or sports/special event days as advised in the newsletter.

House Games:
In Term 1 and 4, House Leaders from the Kauri Hub take House Games for all the Beckenham tamariki. Our Koru children played many fun games with the House Leaders and children from their House Group. Some favourite games were a sandpit treasure hunt, cat and mouse, hula hoop and ball team challenges and Duck, Duck, Goose!

Cat and Mouse

Team ball challenges

News for Term 2:
We warmly welcome Niquita to Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto next term. Niquita will be our third Home Group teacher to join our Koru team.

Kōmanawa block (the classroom up the ramp) is undertaking some building work, starting in the school holidays and will be completed around the middle of Term 2. Once this work is complete, our Koru team will start to use this learning space too.

Kiss and Drop
As more children are starting in the Koru team, our hub can feel a little overwhelming for some tamariki in the morning. Please aim to "kiss and drop" your child off at the door, rather than entering the hub with them. This will help set your children up for a calm, quiet, and successful transition in the morning. Thank you for your support with this!

Learning Through Play
Box construction continues to be a popular activity in the Koru team. If you have any boxes that you would usually put in the recycling, please send them our way! Our children love to stick, colour, shape, cut, decorate and paint.

Have a wonderful break,

Ngā mihi nui,
Koru Team
Katie, Elizabeth, Stacey, Lucy, Maisy, Denise
