Kauri Team Newsletter – Term 1, Week 6

Kia ora koutou,

What a jam-packed two weeks we’ve had in Kauri! Week 5 featured the South Zone Swimming Sports, round two of our Whare Kotahitanga, Walk or Wheel Week, and plenty of learning packed in between.

Week 6 is already shaping up to be a highlight for the yearbook as we enjoyed a range of activities during Leadership Week. From discovering what type of leader we are to putting those qualities into practice, it has been fantastic to see students stepping up and embracing new challenges.

Upcoming Dates:
Week 7:            Wednesday - Whare Kotahitanga (Rotation 3)
Thursday - School Based Immunisation Programme

Week 8:             Monday - Canterbury Hockey Skills Sessions
Thursday & Friday - SISS Mountain Biking Event
Friday - Celebration Assembly & Kauri Sausage Sizzle

Week 9:             Wednesday - Huxster Mountain Biking Event at McLean's Island

Have a fantastic weekend with your tamariki,
Hugo, Kate McG, Megan C, Sarah A, Megan H & Nicky

Thank you to Megan Harris
Over the last three weeks, we have been incredibly lucky to have Megan Harris covering Megan C’s homegroup while she has been away. Megan has stepped in seamlessly and has been a wonderful part of Kauri during this time.

Thank you, Megan, for all the support, care, and enthusiasm you have brought over the past few weeks — we have truly loved having you in Kauri!

South Zone Swimming Sports (& Swimming Cups)
In week 5, our BTKOP representatives headed off to the South Zone Swimming Sports to compete for a chance to advance to the Canterbury event on Thursday the 26th of March. We want to congratulate all of our swimmers for the determination, grit and speed they showed through their races and a further congratulations to those who progressed to the Canterbury event.

We have also presented our first cups for 2026 and wanted to share our congratulations to Sarah W and Sebastian B who were our 2026 recipients. What an incredible achievement for you both!

Whare Kotahitanga
Our house captains, deputy house captains, and sports leaders have been showing off their fantastic leadership skills by running our Whare Kotahitanga sessions over the past two weeks, with two more to go. During this time, we have been taking part in activities within our house groups, involving all tamariki across the school. Students have rotated through four different stations: rautaki (sport), tūhono (connection), auaha (creation), and hononga (team building). Tamariki across the school have been loving this time to connect, and our kaiako (teachers) have been raving about the leadership shown by our student leaders — tino pai!

Week 6 - Leadership Week
Leadership Week has been a highlight for our class. We were lucky to hear from three inspiring speakers — Craig Saunders, Lucy Gray, and Andy Thompson — who shared their experiences and insights about leadership. Through their talks, students learned about different leadership styles and what it means to lead in positive and meaningful ways.

Throughout the week, we had plenty of opportunities to put these ideas into practice. Students planned a tuakana–teina buddy session and spent time on Friday connecting with our Kahikatea buddies. We also walked to Mount Vernon and then on to Hansen Park, where we took part in leadership and team-building challenges.

Each afternoon, students participated in a variety of fun team-building activities, including blindfolded mazes, tug of war, the electric fence challenge, and the classic game of Zip Zap. On Thursday afternoon, we also enjoyed a swim at Waltham Pool, and we returned to school on Friday morning for a team breakfast together.

It has been fantastic to see students stepping up, supporting one another, and growing their leadership skills throughout the week. Please enjoy these photos from Leadership Week!

Pōhutukawa Team News Term 1 Week 6 2026

Ngā mihi e te whānau,

Warm greetings to you all. We have had a wonderful 2 weeks in Pōhutukawa. The weather has been mostly welcoming, apart from the wet blast last week, and the students in great spirits!  Please read on for some news from the team, and some updates on the term. Have a great weekend everyone, kia pai ngā rā whakata.

School arrival times

We have begun to notice more and more students arriving at school before 8 am and lingering around either in the park or outside the school gates. A reminder that students should not be at school before 8am, or alternative supervision is to be sought. Thanks for your help with this.

Working Hard throughout the week in the hub!

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!!

Online Safety: Gaming

Eighty percent of tamariki in New Zealand aged 8-17 have played games online. Games can have many benefits: entertainment, social opportunities, coordination development, problem-solving and multitasking skills. But, most of all, gaming is popular because it’s fun.

But games can be tough for parents and whānau to navigate. How much gaming is too much? How do I make sure my tamariki aren’t seeing inappropriate content or chatting in-game with strangers?

Today we’re sharing Netsafe’s Online Gaming Whānau Toolkit so you have all the resources you need to keep your kids safe.

Have a great weekend everybody, kia pai ngā rā whakatā!

Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto Schoolwide Newsletter, Rāmere (Friday) 6th March 2026

Principal's Update

Ngā mihi e te whānau,

Our PTA plays an important role in supporting our school. Through their work, they raise funds for key school projects and organise events that help strengthen the sense of community and belonging within our school.

Following the successful fundraising for our new turf (which will be installed later this year), the PTA is now turning its attention to the replacement of the shade sails over our junior playground. The current sails are reaching the end of their lifespan and need to be replaced to ensure our students continue to have a safe, shaded space to play.

There are two ways our community can help support this project. The first is to attend the upcoming MoveX evening session, and the second is to contribute to the Easter raffle. Your support of these events will help us move closer to funding this important project.

The existing shade sails will be taken down at the end of this term, with the new sails planned to be installed in time for the beginning of Term 4. This is an important project that supports the health and safety of our students, particularly during the warmer months.

Thank you to our PTA and wider school community for the continued support you show our school.

Details for both fundraisers are below:

Easter Raffle

The Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto PTA is excited to be running an Easter Grocery Raffle in Term 1, with all funds raised going directly back into supporting our tamariki and school initiatives.

We will be creating one large family grocery hamper along with smaller themed hampers - and we would love your support to help fill them!

🧺 How You Can Help

We are asking each family (if you are able) to donate one non-perishable grocery item based on your child’s year level:

• Year 0/1: Small Easter treats (e.g. mini eggs, marshmallows, Easter lollies etc)
• Year 2: Sweet baking items (e.g cake mixes, icing, sprinkles etc)
• Year 3: Lunchbox snacks, biscuits & crackers
• Year 4: Bathroom and beauty items (e.g soaps, body wash, hand wash, toothpaste etc)
• Year 5: Breakfast items (e.g cereal, spreads, porridge, honey etc)
• Year 6: Pantry staples (e.g pasta, rice, sauces, canned goods etc)
• Year 7: Drinks (e.g juice boxes, cordial, hot chocolate etc)
• Year 8: Other grocery items (e.g coffee, tea, condiments etc)

Donations don’t need to be big - every little bit helps make our raffle exciting for the tamariki. We truly appreciate any support you can give.

📦 Drop-Off Details

Please drop your item to the School Office over the next two weeks into the Easter box.

Raffle tickets will go on sale soon for whānau to sell, with the draw taking place in Week 9 before Easter.

Thank you for supporting this PTA fundraiser - your generosity helps create wonderful opportunities for our tamariki.

Have a great weekend.

Ngā mihi,
Cade

Kupu Māori o te Wiki

Kia ora koutou! This year, we are embracing our te reo Māori, and will be learning a new Whakataukī (phrase/proverb), Kīwaha (saying), and Kupu (word) each week. Here is the last two weeks new te reo we have focused on:

Give these a go! Nau mai te wero - We Love Challenge! He taonga te ako - We Love Learning!

Whakataukī: Whakarite ngā kete mō te haerenga! - This means filling our kete for the journey. Who knows where this saying can be found?
Whakataukī: Ahakoa he iti kete, he iti nā te aroha - This means it’s the thought that counts.

Kīwaha: Paia! - this means Awesome!
Kīwaha: Mē he tē! - this means like a boss!

Kupu: Āe - this means yes.
Kupu: Kāore - this means no.

If you are unsure of the pronunciation of a word, have a look at Te Aka (the Māori dictionary) where you can hear how the word is spoken correctly.

Chicken Chat

Our silkies are settling well into their routine and life here at Beckenham Te Kura. They are well cared for and have an incredible roster of students who are part of the 'Chicken team' taking care of their cage cleaning and water/feeding needs throughout the week. Monday to Thursday are timetabled 'chicken experience days' for the tamariki, and on Fridays, the chickens have a rest day.

Chicken fact ~ Did you know? Chickens can eat egg shells, and it helps them to lay more eggs!

The Sports Corner

Kia ora koutou,

This section of our newsletter will be dedicated to highlighting the successes and challenges our students are experiencing in sports outside of school. We love seeing our ākonga (students) showing our school values, especially We Love Challenge Nau Mau Te Wero in the community. If your child has had a sporting success that you’d like to share with our community, please email me with a short blurb and photo to: kate.mcgregor@beckenham.school.nz - We’d love to feature it in our next newsletter!

Embracing the Challenge at the New Brighton XRace

Last weekend, Jess and her Dad took part in the XRace in New Brighton, and it was an exciting day all around. Jess was thrilled to finish first place in her age group — a fantastic achievement!

For those unfamiliar with XRace, it’s a family adventure race filled with mystery challenges and fun obstacles that teams must complete together. Along the course, Jess and her Dad tackled activities like a three-legged race (not easy when Dad’s legs are so much longer!), crossword puzzles, piggyback rides, and plenty of running between stations. Most importantly, it was a fun and memorable day out for both of them.

It was also great to spot around half a dozen other Beckenham tamariki taking part alongside their adults. Seeing so many members of our community involved and enjoying the challenges was fantastic, and they were all clearly demonstrating one of our school values — “We Love Challenge.”

Year 0–2 Touch Rugby: Beckenham Fire & Beckenham Sharks

Our Year 0–2 Touch Rugby teams, the Fire and the Sharks, have been having a fantastic time on the field! The tamariki have shown great enthusiasm, teamwork, and determination each week as they learn the game and support one another. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence grow while having lots of fun playing touch rugby together. Ka pai to all our players!

Year 7 Relay Team Takes 1st at South Zones!

Congratulations to our Year 7 relay swimming team (Hazel, Harvey, Haydn, and Clara) who placed 1st at the South Zones swimming competition. This is a fantastic achievement and a real testament to their teamwork and effort in the pool. We are very proud of how they represented our school.
I will share more results and highlights from South Zones in the next newsletter, so keep an eye out for those!

Koru Team News 2026

Term 1, Week 4

Kia Ora E Te Whānau,
And just like that we are at the end of February! Time sure does go fast in the Koru hub with all the fun we are having. Your little 5 year olds are all settling so well into their school days. It's such a joy to see their smiling faces arriving each day.

In this week's Blog:
  • Literacy
  • Evacuation Drill
  • Whare Kotahitanga
  • Lots of cute photos
  • Reminders
Literacy

This week we began our literacy group sessions. You may have heard your children talk about the yellow jelly bean table! This is where our literacy groups take place. At Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto we follow a Structured Literacy approach to reading. Your children will be bringing home a few letter sounds to practise at home and these will be added to as they progress. These can be used to practise the pure sounds the letters make and then can be blended together to form words. Your child could practice writing them as well as saying the pure sounds each letter makes. Heart words, these are words that cannot be sounded out, will also start coming home for children to practise. Once they are proficient in segmenting and blending the first 8 sounds together, and know the heart words, they will start bringing home decodable books to read with you at home. The ability to segment and blend sounds together is paramount to their success at decoding words, so this stage may take longer for some learners. It is exciting to see their progress take off once they have accomplished this skill. The next step is for the learner to be able to write the sounds they hear in words and we do lots of practise with this within our lessons. This would be a great home learning activity once they are secure in the sounds they are bringing home.

Evacuation Drill

Each term we have a schoolwide practice drill on a different type of emergency situation. On Wednesday morning we had a practice fire evacuation drill. We talked about it a lot and even had our own mini practice the day before. The children were amazing during the drill, so calm and listened so well. We were very impressed.

Whare Kotahitanga

On Wednesday we had our first Whare Kotahitanga event. It was lots of fun! Whare Kotahitanga is a refreshed house programme focused on connection, belonging, and unity rather than competition. It is being run on Wednesday afternoons for the next 3 weeks. During the sessions each house is taking part in a different activity. Over the 4 week programme each house will rotate around the 4 different activities. Ask your little house member what the activity for their house was this week.

Reminders

  • Hats are needed each day at school for terms 1 & 2
  • Our library day is Friday so books need to be brought back to school before Friday
  • Poetry books go home on a Friday and can come back any day before the next Friday
  • House tee shirts can be worn on the next 3 Wednesdays - these are optional uniform items and can be purchased from the school office.
  • There has been quite a lot of sickness across the school, if your child is unwell please keep them home to prevent spreading bugs.
Have a lovely relaxing weekend together. We look forward to seeing you next week.

Elizabeth, Kendall, Nicola and Stacey

Kōwhai News Term 1 Week 4

Kia ora e te whānau,

Here is the latest news from the Kōwhai team!

School Uniform

Thank you for ensuring that your children are wearing the correct school uniform to school each day. Here is the link to the Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto uniform guideline. There is an extensive range of reasonably priced second-hand uniform items available through our School PTA Uniform Shop. Please contact the school office for current opening hours.

A reminder that all children are to bring their sunhats to school each day. We really appreciate your support. As you know, staying sun smart is important. Any children who forget their hats will need to remain under the hall verandah during break times, with duty teachers supporting and reminding students as needed.

Kapa Haka Performance

The Kōwhai hub will be performing kapa haka at our celebration assembly on Friday 13th March. If you would like to see your child/children perform, assembly will be in the hall at 10am.

Top Team

What a fantastic afternoon we had! It was wonderful to see so much energy at Top Team. The true highlight was seeing our school kete values in action. Despite a few splashes and some soggy uniforms, our tamariki were amazing, navigating obstacles, displaying teamwork and cheering each other on with kindness.

Events like this simply wouldn't be possible without our community. A huge thank you to our wonderful parent helpers. Your time and energy ensured everything ran smoothly, and we are so grateful for your ongoing support of our tamariki. Nau mai te whero - We Love Challenge!

Here are some photos from the day.

Maths & Literacy Groups

We are now full steam ahead with learning in the Kòwhai hub! This week we started learning in our new maths groups for the year. Next week, we will be starting our literacy groups.

Please be aware that only the children working on the structured literacy programme will be bringing a book home from school to read each week. We continue to encourage all children to read at home and to make use of the school and public libraries to find new and interesting books to read.

Scooter Opportunity

As you will remember, on Thursday 19th March, a representative from the Christchurch City Council will be visiting our school to run a Scooter Skills programme throughout the day. Tamariki will participate in 45-minute sessions in groups of 20. As we are required to supply our own scooters, and it would be impractical to have 100 scooters at school on the day.

We are kindly asking if five more families would be willing to lend a scooter for the day. All scooters would be returned at the end of the day. Thank you to the families who have already volunteered their scooters. If you are able to help, please let your child’s homegroup teacher know. All children need to bring a helmet for the scooter skills day.

Staying Safe Online

As our tamariki spend more time online, it’s important parents and whānau help them

stay safe. Now is a great time to talk to them about how we use the internet and digital

technology.

Netsafe has created an Online Safety Parent Toolkit so parents, families and whānau have

all the information they need to talk about online safety.

If you or anyone in your whānau needs support, you can contact Netsafe.

Have a great weekend!
