English for Speakers of Other Languages

At Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto, we value diversity. We celebrate the different cultures in our school and appreciate what they bring to our school community. Teachers take special consideration to design learning programmes that incorporate the learning needs and abilities of all students including those where English is a second language.

Students who are English Language Learners (ELLs)  are supported within the Hub environment by their peers, small instructional groups and teaching assistants.   Teacher’s scaffold a student’s learning in order to help them achieve. When appropriate ELLs can also be involved in withdrawal learning programmes, outside of the normal classroom programme, which are designed to expose them to English words, phrases and conventions.

We employ a teacher, alongside the SENCO, who co-ordinates our ESOL programmes. Children are assessed with a variety of assessment tools including a focus on oral language. Programmes are planned and resources organised to meet their English language needs.
