  • Leadership Week
  • Swimming Sports
  • Attitude Parent Evening
  • Cheese Rolls
  • CSM try outs
Kia ora whānau, another great week in the Kauri hub. There was much excitement around our first Technology session on Tuesday, everyone managed to get to school on time and all went smoothly. We are gearing up for Leadership week next week and rallying parents together for another fundraising opportunity.

Technology:
The students represented Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto with pride. They had a great morning and there were many proud, smiling faces as we wandered around checking in on what they were making and doing.

Leadership Week:
Leadership week is coming up next week, students will work with their own year group. Both year groups will be participating in activities based around the 7 habits of mind, aimed to grow their leadership abililities.

Year 7 students will have a day participating in a rotation of activities, they have been asked to come to school in activewear on Wednesday.

Part of the plan for our Year 8 students is to have two EOTC days-Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd February, they may wear activewear on these days. On Thursday students will participate in school based activities, they will then be provided dinner here before we head off for an evening play at Margaret Mahy. We need parent helpers from 1:15-3:00pm on the Thursday at school to help run these activities.
The Thursday is an overnight stay, students sleep in the hub. More information will be sent out in a separate HERO post to all Y8 parents including a gear list and a medical form to fill out. On Friday we head to Spencer Park by bus from 9:30-3:00pm. We need parent helpers for this also.  If you are able to help please email sarah.junghenn@beckenham.school.nz.

Swimming Sports:
This is happening on Thursday 29th February 12:30-2:30 at Wharenui Swimming Centre. Please fill in the parent help form in the HERO post if you are able to help on the day.

Attitude Parent Evening: Parenting in the digital age
To be held on Tuesday 20th February (next week) in our school hall 6:00-7:00pm.

Cheese Roll Fundraiser:
We are making/selling cheese rolls to go towards our EOTC funding. This will be happening on Thursday 4th April. If you are able to help with this please fill in this google form.
Thanks to all whānau who have paid or have set up payments towards school donations, this is enabling us to plan ahead to provide EOTC opportunities for our Senior students.
Please contact the school office if you would like to set up an automatic payment.

CSM Try outs:
An opportunity for students to give an instrument a go! This will be in Pohutukawa on Wednesday the 21st of February from 4:00-6:00pm.

Kia Kaha Fire Fighters:
We appreciate everything you do!

Kahikatea News Term 1 Week 3

Kia ora e te whānau,

We have had a wonderful start to the year in the Kahikatea team. Time has flown! We have loved seeing tamariki settling in so well and coming to school with smiles on their faces.

Learning Through Play Resources

Kahikatea is on the lookout for toys and resources for Learning Through Play. If you have toys, games, puzzles, or dress-ups that your family no longer needs or uses, we would happily take them off your hands! He waka eke noa, we get there together.

House Games

We will be having House Games on Mondays during weeks 4 (19/2/24), 6 (4/3/24), and 8 (18/3/24) this term. Your child is welcome to wear their house shirt.

Library

We will begin our weekly library visits next week (Week 4). The library is also open during morning tea and lunch play times - children are welcome to go to the library to return books, issue new ones, or browse books during this time.

Library Days

Tuesdays - Amber and Ella's home groups

Thursdays - Quynh and Sarah's home groups

Literacy

We began working with our literacy teachers this week. It has been lovely to see children showing 'We Love Learning' during literacy time. Your child's literacy folder tub is kept in the pathway. We encourage children to bring their literacy folder to each literacy lesson.

Whānau Photo Wall

One of our kaiako, Sarah, had a wonderful idea of putting whānau photos up on the wall in Kahikatea. If you have photos of your family that you would like to contribute to this, please feel free to email Sarah (sarah.angelo@beckenham.school.nz) or your child's home group teacher.

Netball Sessions

The Kahikatea team is really looking forward to our upcoming introduction to netball sessions. We have coaches from Cashmere Netball Club coming to run four sessions per homegroup, beginning in Week 5. Sarah and Quynh's home groups will have their sessions on Tuesdays, and Amber and Ella's home groups will have their sessions on Thursdays. Thank you Cashmere Netball Club!
That's all for now,

Kōwhai News Term 1 Week 3

Kia ora whānau,

It has a been a busy week in the Kōwhai team!

Top Team

We have organised another Top Team event for our Kōwhai children this year which is very exciting! Weather permitting, the event will take place on Friday 1st March in the afternoon and the children will be taking part in all sorts of fun activities. Just a heads up that there will be some water activities involved so please make sure your child has a change of clothes (including shoes) in their bag and a towel to dry off after the event. Thank you for your support with this.

We also require 11 parent helpers for this event to ensure it runs successfully. You would need to arrive at school before the Top Team briefing at 1:10pm and the event will finish around 2:55pm. It will involve running an activity station, explaining the activity to the children and generally overseeing it. If you are keen to help, please let your child's homegroup teacher know and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Literacy and Maths

Next week, we will be starting our literacy and maths interchange programmes. We have organised the children into new literacy and maths classes. The children will go to their literacy teacher for literacy lessons and their maths teacher for maths lessons every day. They will still be with their homegroup teacher at the start of the day and after lunch.

As part of their literacy programme, the children will generally take one or two books home each week. Students working in Stage 1 - Stage 7.5 of the structured literacy programme will take home at least one structured literacy book (e.g., a Pip and Tim book) home each week to read to you. Students who are working beyond Stage 7.5 are expected to independently read chapter books (or similarly advanced books) of their own choice at home. Each literacy class visits the school library every week to issue new books.

For more detailed information about our home learning literacy activities, please click here.

Minecraft 3D Printing

Some of the children have recently been learning about using Minecraft for 3D printing. They have designed and constructed a model of a character, toy or scene in Minecraft and are now in the process of 3D printing their creations. As a final step, the children will paint their printed models.

The 3D printer is printing the character

We have also been creating Minecraft self-portraits using grid paper which has been a lot of fun!

Skipping

During Discovery, some of our students have discovered a passion for skipping. Here's a video that shows some really cool tricks that people can do when they are skipping. Whilst our skill level isn't quite at this stage yet - we are aiming high! 'Just keep skipping!'

Koru News 16/02/2024: Term 1 Week 3

 Kia ora, e te whānau,

What a wonderful start to the year it has been in the Koru team! The tamariki are doing a great job at independently completing their morning jobs of putting their lunchbox and drink bottle on the shelf, sliding their name up on the board and settling into a quiet activity before the bell, learning our school routines, and getting used to school life. Over the last two weeks we have been very busy! We have learnt some of our new Milo the Monkey sounds and characters (Little Learners Love Literacy), explored some different areas of Mathematics, completed different types of artworks, played with a range of equipment within our hub, and have started creating relationships with others in our hub. Our tamariki have settled in beautifully and we are so proud of the progress they have made already in the first few weeks of school. Some photos of what we have been up to:

What our year will look like: In the Koru team, we learn lots of amazing new things. Here is an overview of some of the things we will learn in our different learning areas:

Literacy: We will learn about our sounds, how to use these sounds to make words by segmenting and blending, and using our skills to read Sam, Pip and Tim books. We will also read different picture books and big books, and will look further at the different elements these stories have (sentence structure, vocabulary, grammar, big and exciting words, punctuation etc.)

Maths: In Maths this year, we will be looking at a wide range of elements within mathematics. We will explore problem solving, rapid routines, addition and subtraction, equal sharing strategies, counting, statistics, measurement, patterns, time and sequencing and much more. We will also practising writing our numbers.

Kinetic Letters: For handwriting, we follow the Kinetic Letters Handwriting Programme. We teach the children about different movements, strong body positions, and letter families. The letter families contain different letters that have similar movements, to help support the child in writing these. Once the children have learnt the different letters in lowercase, they then go on to learning uppercase.

The Arts:  We will be looking at a range of aspects of the Arts this year such as Visual Art, Dance, Drama and Music. In Visual Arts, we will look at different styles of Art such as painting, collage, pastel and crayon work, drawing, and will use one of these styles for our Calendar Art. In Dance, we will look at different ways to move our bodies in the time to a musical beat. In Drama, we will look at story telling and role play and this will be incorporated into our Learning through Play. In Music, we will explore different rhythm patterns, and finding different ways we can make sound using different objects/things.

Te reo Māori: We will explore different aspects of Te reo Māori including learning our mihi, the words for colours, body parts, numbers, days of the week and months of the year, different instructions, and lots of waiata.

Wellbeing/Health and PE: In Wellbeing/Health, we will learn about Hauora through Te Whare Tapa Whā, exploring the physical, emotional, spiritual, and whānau aspects of our wellbeing. We will also be taking part in Life Education this year. In P.E, we will learn different movement skills through games, ball skills, and fitness. We will also be partaking in our whole school Cross Country and Athletics.

Science: In Science, we will be looking at Planet Earth and Beyond and will learn about our Solar System, our Earth Systems and will explore their natural features and resources.

Social Sciences: In Social Sciences, we will be looking into our school wide concept of Identity. This will be interlinked through our other curriculum areas, as well as learning about Matariki, who we are, and our stories.

Technology/Digitech: Later on in the year, we will be exploring different concepts of Digitech. We will learn about coding, looking at what it is and how we can explore it through using unplugged and plugged resources.

Friday Waiata sessions: We are so lucky to spend some time with Whaea Cath on Friday's singing waiata and learning some te reo Māori. It was such an awesome session, we can't wait for Whaea Cath to come back!

Friday Buddies: On Friday afternoons, we are very fortunate to be able to have 4 big buddies from the Kauri team come down and hang out with us. We have had two sessions with our big buddies so far which have been awesome! We have created some butterfly art, read lots of stories, played with the vehicles, and built really all towers with our Duplo. We had so much fun, we can't wait until next Friday!

Library: On Fridays during the middle block, the Koru tamariki get to go down to our school library and have a look at the different books there are on offer. In our team, we get to choose 2 books to take home that have a yellow dot in the top right hand corner. We get to keep these stories until the following Friday, where we can bring them back in to swap them for 2 more new ones. If we forget to bring our books back, that's okay, we just keep them for another week. If the Library books are forgotten a couple of times in a row, we will get an email from Anne to say these books are overdue and we need to bring them back. Here are some photos of what our Library looks like, the types of books we can get out, how we wait in the line to get our books issued from Anne, and where we wait with our folders once they have been issued.

This box is where your child will put their Library Folder when they bring them back

Some Reminders:

Friendship List: On Friday 9th February, Georgia sent out the Koru Whānau friendship list to all families who wished to be on it. This will be updated every term as new tamariki start school. If you have not received this yet, please check your spam/junk folder as sometimes these emails end up there. Any questions, don't hesitate to email or ask.

Lunchboxes: A few reminders about your child's lunchboxes:

  • Please ensure your child is only bringing water to school in their lunchboxes/drink bottles (no juice or other drinks).
  • It is also important to help teach your child how to open and close their lunchboxes, so they can do this independently at the start and end of eating times.
  • It would be great if you could also either precut or teach your child how to open packets in their lunchboxes (for example potato sticks, chip bags, twisty yoghurt pouches, muesli bars etc.)
Thank you for your help and co-operation with this!

We hope you have a lovely weekend ahead, and we will see you on Monday ready to go for another fantastic week!

Ngā mihi mahana,

Georgia and Stacey

Week 2

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

On Friday we came together for our first Celebration Assembly for 2024. We acknowledged the way all tamariki are using the Kete Values as they transition to the new school year - meeting new teachers, settling into hubs, and in the way they have welcomed tamariki who are new to Beckenham in 2024.

We also shared the changes to Senior Leadership for the year. Sandy Hastings is seconded to the Ministry of Education for 2024 in a Leadership Advisor role and will be working with many Principals around Canterbury, so Jo Smith will be Acting Principal whilst Sandy is on leave. The Senior Leadership team will be Jo, Sue Leadbetter (Deputy Principal/SENCO), and Katie McFarlane (Acting Deputy Principal).

Following on from the start of year conferences the focus for the start of the year in Hubs is getting to know each other. Spending time getting to know the staff and the other tamariki in the hub, how the spaces will work and the routines that support the team working collaboratively. This is part of setting up for the year ahead. Along with this is a reminder to all our whānau that the Home Group teachers are always happy to be contacted throughout the year if there is anything you would like to share or discuss about your child. The home/school relationship is important and communication plays a large part in this. So please see your child's Home Group teacher in the first instance.

If at any stage your whānau contact details change, please contact the school office with these changes so our records can be updated. This includes the emergency contacts we have for your child.

This year, to streamline communication, school newsletters will be published every second week and will alternate with Team Blog posts. Communications through Hero will continue as required.

Ngā mihi nui
Jo Smith - Tumuaki (Acting Principal)

Whānau Evening - Attitude Presents (for the whole school)

We are hosting a whānau evening run by a group called Attitude entitled 'Parenting in the Digital age' This will be held in the school hall on Tuesday 20th February 6pm-7pm. The evening is open to all parents/whānau of Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto.
The presentation covers how whānau can help their young people navigate the adolescent years in a rapidly changing world. If you are concerned with the impact of technology, social media, gaming and their safety online then this presentation will give you the tools and insights you need to confidently raise happy and resilient children.

The content is adult appropriate, please leave children at home.

Please watch this video to find out more:

Want to Try-An-Instrument at Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto and join the  Wind and Brass Concert Band?

At Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto, your child can learn to play an instrument with the Christchurch School Of Music (CSM) Outreach Band Programme. Children who learn music build confidence, increase their learning abilities, sharpen organisational skills and gain valuable social, physical and academic skills. Most importantly, learning an instrument in the band programme is fun!

In our band programme we teach clarinet, flute, trumpet, trombone, electric bass guitar, percussion/drums and saxophone. Students in Year 4 and above can choose their instrument and join a band. After a few lessons, children join the Da Capo (beginners) band. They rehearse together on Tuesday mornings and have an individual 15-minute lesson (or a 30-minute lesson in a group of two).  Our Tutti Concert Band will rehearse in the hall on Tuesday afternoons from 3pm. Come along, have a listen and see what we are all about.

You can sign up for lessons now by clicking on the enrol button.  For more information email: office@csm.org.nz or the Outreach Band Coordinator at outreachband@csm.org.nz

Lunch Orders

Lunchonline is a lunch delivery service that our families are able to access for their children, which is available on Wednesdays (Subway) and Fridays (Sushi Factory). Please ensure that you update your child's details on their database so lunches can be matched up with your child more easily when they are delivered.

To access this, you will need to set up an account with LunchOnline here.

Pop Up Reminder – To Change Classroom

When families first log on in 2024 they will see a “pop up” on the screen to remind them to change their child’s classroom to their new room for 2024.  This pop-up feature will also be used for any other important notices.

We are really hopeful that this pop up screen will prompt most families to update their classrooms, saving time for the office staff.  Many schools also remind parents to do this in their first newsletter.

Sushimeetsdumplings is a local lunch delivery service that our whānau can access on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday.

Trailblazers

Trailblazers is a sports based youth development programme, developed and led by Snr Constable Jo Ryder (youth aid officer, school community officer, parent of neurodivergent tamariki, qualified teacher and certification in Dr Bruce Perry’s Neurosequential Model of Sport (an approach that integrates core principles of neurodevelopment and traumatology to inform work with children, focusing on how the brain works, develops, changes, and is impacted by developmental adversity, including trauma)

The programme has an emphasis on connection, belonging and movement for mental health.

The focus is on fun and friendship, the running is nearly incidental as our packs explore set trails together – supporting one another and often conquering mini challenges as they go!

We have a strong number of fabulous volunteers resulting in increased safety and mentorship for tamariki.

Priority is given to those impacted by trauma, neurodiversity, or mental health conditions - particularly when those experiences act as barriers to participation and inclusion. We also seek tamariki that are positive supporters of others – the uplifters and leaders in your kura.

Transport may be able to be supported in some instances (please enquire).

The programme starts next Tuesday 13th February and further information will be sent out on receipt of completed enrolment form, or simply phone Jo (number below) for a kōrero to learn more.

Please pop into the School Office to pick up, and complete an enrolment form for Trailblazers.

For any questions, please phone Snr Constable Jo Ryder on 021 192 6674.
