Koru News Week 1 Term 4

Welcome to Term 4
A warm greeting to all our new entrants, new students and families who have joined us this term. It is a pleasure getting to know you and your children.

Warm sunny days mean our students must be wearing a named sunhat when they are outside for break times and when they are doing fitness or sport with their hub.

Home Learning routines should be up and running by now and children are encouraged to read every night. Great readers become great by reading, so thank you for supporting your child/children as they develop and grow as learners.

We are loving the way you are all supporting your children's independence, encouraging them do things for themselves and by themselves when they can. A bit of modelling and praise will always help.

Firewise
This week we have been engaged in leaning about safe behaviors around fire. This is valuable learning and the knowledge and skills students are learning are very important. Do take some time to talk with your child/children about what they are learning and talk about your fire plan.

Inquiry Topic
The Koru hub 1-4 students will begin their inquiry in Week 3 with our theme around building design, construction, materials and sustainability. Keep a look out for more details about this in upcoming blogs and newsletters.

2018 T4 W1 in Pōhutukawa

Welcome to the final term of 2018.

Living Springs Camp 13-15 November (Week 5)
Thank you to all of the adults who volunteered to assist us on camp. We have a fabulous number of adults who are giving up their time to participate in our camp programme.
Shortly we will be sending home medical forms and gear lists.
If you have any questions about camp please free to contact any teacher in our hub for more information.

Cycle safety
The year 6 students are participating in a Christchurch City Council run cycle safety programme this week. With summer coming up it is great to see our children learning to be more confident in their biking skills on the road.

The Great New Zealand Shake Out
Our school has signed up for the Great NZ Shakeout School Challenge. Each person that completes the 8 challenges with their families will be in to get some cool prizes.
Some of the challenges include...

  • Show someone how to drop cover and hold – inside and outside.
  • Check your tsunami zone and plan where to go.
  • Store water for three days or more.
  • Identify which key household objects need to be secured or made safer through Fix. Fasten. Don’t Forget.
  • Find out which natural hazards could affect your family.
  • Work out what to pack in a getaway bag for your family.
  • Make a plan that includes who will pick up the kids if the adults can’t get to school.
  • Make a list of who can help in an emergency
The students have been given a booklet to take home. If your child would like to participate by completing all of the challenges, they just needs to bring the booklet back, with each challenged signed to say it was completed, to collect their small prize.

Welcome assembly
This term's welcome assembly is on Friday at 2:30. We welcome everyone back to the new term, and Pōhutukawa in particular welcomes two new students and their whānau to our school.

Athletics
Athletics training has started this week, and it is very encouraging seeing the students improve in many of the athletics disciplines. Our school athletics day is in week 3, Thursday 1 November.

Thank you for your support.

Kauri Whānau Weekly Update: Term 4 Week 1

We hope that the holidays have been good at your place. It's time to dig out that sun hat ready for the new school term, when spring returns on Monday. Read on for some important messages and a brief glimpse at what lies in store for this term.

Headphones:

It is important that every child has their headphones or earbuds at school from the first week back. A stationery check, especially pencil, eraser, ruler, glue-stick and pen, would also be appreciated. Please check that the sunhat is packed too.

Missing a lunchbox?

We have a collection of lunch containers at school. The food remnants have been removed and they have been washed. If you spot one of yours in this photo, please remind your child to collect it, on Monday, from the maker-space.

Writer’s Club

Following the success of Maths Club on a Wednesday morning, we are offering an extension group for writers for the duration of Term 4. This is an optional group session that will meet on Friday mornings at 8:20 in the Breakout Space. Maths club will continue as usual on a Wednesday morning at 8:20.

2019 Leaders:

Early in term four, we appoint house captains and student council executive positions for the following year. This is so that these 11 children can attend a leadership training afternoon in mid November.  Their roles will not start until 2019. On Tuesday, we will explain the application process to the children. This will include filling in a form and a group interview. Applications will close on October 26th. If a child would like to be considered for a house captain position, they need to be aware that they may need to change houses for their final year at Beckenham.

Upcoming sports events

Wednesday the 24th October - Kiwi Volleyball Year 7/8 league starts

Continuing our newly found love of volleyball, we have two teams entered into this after school league which runs for 7 weeks at Hillview Christian School.

Thursday the 1st November - School Athletics

The children will compete in Mid Distance, Sprints, Shotput, Discus and High Jump. We started our training for this event at the end of last term.

Friday the 2nd of November - Long Jump

Our long jump event will be held at Hillview Christian School again this year. This will be an optional event for the children. Children enter this event by completing a Google Form that is shared on Google Classroom.

Wednesday the 7th of November - Summer Tournament

We are putting together teams in touch, orienteering, tennis and slow pitch this week. Children who are interested will need to complete a Google Form. Many thanks to the parents who have volunteered to take a team.

Monday the 12th of November - Zone Athletics

Qualifying children will travel by bus to Hansen Park to compete against our neighbouring schools.

Wednesday the 28th - Canterbury Triathalon

This is a fantastic event held at Pegasus, involving a swim in the lake, a bike and a run round the lake. This is an optional event for children with a good level of fitness who want to embrace an extra challenge. Children have had an amazing time at this event in the past.

Wednesday the 5th of December - Canterbury Athletics

There is a change of venue for this event this year. Children who qualify for Canterbury’s will be amoung the first to enjoy the new facilities at Nga Puna Wai.

We are looking for some adult helpers for the above athletics events. If you are available to help out at any event, please, email Jenny.

Mountain Biking Passion

Organisation for our mountain biking passion is well underway. If your child is part of this passion group and you have not yet completed the google form, please do so asap.
We are still looking for an additional parent to come with us to Halswell Quarry on Thursday the 25th of October. This is more about transporting bikes, we have plenty of adults on bikes to run the session and just need to get the children to the tracks. A non-biking parent would be just fine.

Last call for adult helpers for Living Springs camp

Term 4 Camp at Living Springs

If you are able to be an adult helper at the camp, please complete the online form
(https://goo.gl/forms/xI7pk5nKsKo9KyMb2) by this Sunday 7 October. We require the help of
approximately 16 adults for the camp to go ahead. If you are able to help, your role will involve direct
supervision of groups of children; inside/outside activities, evening bunk room duty, setting tables,
serving meals, operating the dishwasher, helping with the cleaning of all areas used at the end of the
stay. You will need to be able to stay the entire camp. As the cost of adult helpers is covered in the
camp fee, we will only take the necessary number of parent helpers in order to minimise costs. If we
have more volunteers than we need, we will select first based on the skills needed and then names
will be drawn from a ballot.

We intend to notify all adults who have filled in the survey on Monday 8 October.

A consent form and medical questionnaire will be sent home in Term 4 to students and parent helpers.
The camp costs us $155 per child to run and this includes food, accommodation, the cost of the
programmes run by the Living Springs staff and transport.

We are looking forward to a great camp.
