Kauri Whanau: Term 2 Week 7 Update

What are we up to in the Intermediate Hub?

Since the start of this term we have been exploring diversity through lots of rich discussion, videos and a guest speaker. Next week we will introduce the children to their inquiry options. The children will select an aspect of diversity: cultural, gender or disability, to focus their inquiry on.

In the meantime, we are having a focus on visual art this week. The children have opted for one of the following: mixed media mini canvas, cartoon drawing or lego based portraits. We are looking forward to seeing what they produce by the end of Thursday.

We finished our hockey unit with a festival last Wednesday. From tomorrow we will be focusing on football skills, every Wednesday for 45 mins.

Last week we started writing stories based on a world record attempt. We will come back to these next week. Some children will need to spend time at home working on these this week.

Year 8 girls will be starting self defence classes with Lynda Maindonald from Self Defence NZ next Monday afternoon. They will have 5 sessions. We have worked with Lynda for several years now and the girls in the past have found these sessions very empowering, and fun.

Choir:

Tomorrow, the choir meet by the ponds at 8:30. From there they will walk to Hillview for a massed choir rehearsal. This will happen again next Tuesday morning. Both mornings, they will be back at Champion Street by 11:45. Booking forms for tickets to see the choir perform next Tuesday and Wednesday evening need to be returned to the office by this Friday. Jarred has spare copies if needed.

Cheese Rolls:

Our Passion Friday cheese roll business group, EeezyCheezyInc, have been very busy planning, testing, designing and organising systems. Order forms went on-line in the weekend and paper forms went home today. We will be having two cheese roll making days. The first will be on Thursday June 29th, for Year 1-4 orders. The second will be on Wednesday July 5th for Year 5-8 orders. We would appreciate as much parent help as possible on these days. Please fill in this form if are able to help at some stage.

An awesome family outing:

From the Christchurch Maths Association: We warmly invite you to discover the maths behind craft and the craft behind maths at Christchurch’s first Maths Craft Day, Sunday June 18 in The Great Hall at The Arts Centre. Our all-day event is free, and suitable for adults and children alike, and we would love to see you there. The Christchurch Maths Craft Day will feature seven craft creation stations as well as public talks by mathematician crafters, and the day-long celebration of maths promises to engage people of all ages. Make a Möbius strip, crochet a hyperbolic plane, build a fractal sculpture, fold an origami octahedron, and listen to talks about the connections between maths and crafts. Explore the newly opened Teece Museum at the Arts Centre and discover the ancient relationship between mathematics and craftsmanship. Open to everyone: experts and amateurs, maths-fans and maths-phobes, the crafty and the curious.

Beckenham Cheese Roll Fundraiser

An enthusiastic team of Year 7 & 8 children have been busy setting up a small business: EezyCheezyInc. They have tested cheese roll recipes, sought feedback, sourced ingredients, created ordering and advertising material and are ready to launch their business. Advertising will go on-line and on display this week, and paper order forms will go home.

The first $600 they make will go towards our J-Rock expenses. All the rest will go towards the outdoor spaces fundraising project. If you would like to order your cheese rolls on-line, please click this link.

Many thanks for your support.

KORU HIGHLIGHTS Term 2 Week 6-7

Kia ora!
What an action packed fortnight we have had! Enjoy reading about the highlights below:

Reminders/Notices

* If your child needs more stationery, we will send a note home regarding what and how to purchase this.
* Please check jerseys to make sure your child is bringing home their jersey. Several jerseys have been lost recently. Thanks also for sending your child to school in uniform black shoes.
* A big thank you for waiting until 8:30 to enter classrooms.
* Junior School Cross Country is on Thursday 22 June from 1.30pm. The postponement date for this event is Thursday, June 29th. If you would like to help, please email Caitlyn. If your child has spare trainers, please pop these in their bags over the next fortnight as we will be running practises, and the route can be muddy at times.

Gallery & Botanic Gardens

We enjoyed a trip to the gallery and botanic gardens, many thanks to Elizabeth (Gail) and fabulous parent helpers...many thanks to each of you.

At the gallery, we had a personal tour in small groups, and looked closely at some of the art on display. An animal themed exhibition was a hit with the children, particularly one stuffed sloth! The children each thought about what is important to them and completed our own Waka drawing.

Maths
We have been learning about measurement over the last weeks, as well as computation and practising number knowledge. The children have loved the hands-on nature of measuring things...and each other!
Key concepts covered:
* Length, height, width, capacity, volume
* Using informal measurements e.g. blocks or popsicle sticks to measure length
* Start and end point
* Placing our measurement tool (e.g. blocks) end to end.
Why not try measuring books, a self, a person or something else at home?

Circle Time
Each Hub continues to have a weekly Circle Time. Students are encouraged to share 'what's on top' for them, and to celebrate successes or resolve challenges collaboratively, with teacher support. Circle Time relies on honesty and acceptance - each person's view is valued. Each Hub has also been exploring different aspects of social-emotional learning, such as change, conflict resolution, mind-set and how it can impact learning (learn more here - Carol Dwek's research), respect and giving/receiving compliments.

 Arts Programme
The teachers have created a collaborative movement/sound arts programme for Monday afternoons. Children get to enjoy a different activity each week, from Zumba with Caitlyn, to percussion with Charlotte and mindful movement with Amber. Choir with Dorinda is also on offer for our eager singers - the children are learning vocal exercises and an entertaining selection of songs.

Kapa haka:

Our children spend time with our kaiako Maori, Sherrilee, each week, and participate in these lessons with impressive energy and enthusiasm! These photos tell the story beautifully, and include children who have had only very little time at school yet, as well as one who is yet to start, but was visiting school last Thursday. Thank you, Sherrilee, for all you give to the youngest of our Beckenham School students.

Just visiting, but so beautifully confident!

Discovery Stations:

Discovery Station continue to be a highly motivating time of each day. The children practise their Key Competency skills: Thinking; Relating to Others; Understanding Language, Symbols and Texts; Managing Self; and Participating and Contributing. They also show amazing skill at being able to intertwine their learning in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy, as the following photos demonstrate.

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

I had the pleasure this week of joining Hub 1 on their Art Gallery and Botanic Gardens trip. The children were shown a small number of works at the gallery and engaged in a lot of discussion about those works before returning to the gallery classroom to create their own works. The small group I was with were shown a exhibit that included sculptures of sloths, made from recycled fur coats and gloves. They were quite fascinated with these creatures, and we had a go at making our bodies into the shapes of the sculptures. We took our volunteer guide slightly by surprise, but no sloth were hurt and a trip to the gallery was made just a little bit more memorable!

Preparing for New Learning Spaces

Our teachers are continuing to develop their practice and processes around collaboration as we work towards moving into our new learning spaces. Last week, the 5 teachers from the Y3/4 Kowai team spent a day together, visiting another school that has recently moved into learning spaces very similar to ours, spending time in our new building and then meeting to develop the systems and processes that will be important to have for the successful transition from our current spaces to our new spaces. They are considering the ways that our children learn, and ensuring that there will be consistency from all the members of the teaching team in the expectations and messages that are given to the children.

The West Hub continues to progress with lighting, plumbing, wall and floor coverings and joinery nearly all in. The underfloor heating system is being commissioned this coming week.
Our Year 1/2 teachers from Hub 10/11 had a similar day on Thursday, and the Koru teachers from Hubs 1-4 will have a similar day coming in the next couple of weeks. We appreciate that having a reliever in the class for day is not quite the same as having the teacher with whom the children are familiar, and we believe that giving the teachers sufficient time for this preparation is very important and will result in the best outcomes as we move forward.

Pohutukawa Team Highlights

Identity
Our conceptual learning is focused around understanding that identity highlights the uniqueness and similarities within living things, communities, structures and places. This term, we have developed this understanding further through Science, Visual Art and Health.
As we started our journey last term into the concept of identity, an interest sparked around DNA when we were learning about our whakapapa. This term, we are delving deeper into that through crime scene investigations, individual traits, inheritance and genes. Here are some examples of drawing a dog, created from a unique DNA code:

We are learning about visually communicating our ideas in relation to our identity. This area has been explored through Picasso style cubism portraits. Here are some examples of our ideas:

During Term 1 we developed our understanding around how people’s feelings, beliefs and actions contribute to our own and others’ sense of self-worth. This term, we are building on this concept through focusing on ways to act responsibility to support ourselves and others in negative situations, particularly bullying. We are exploring this through identifying types of bullying, the impacts it might have and what we can do to stop it. Here is one of our groups practising their role play based on a bullying scenario:

Writing
We have been working on making changes to our writing to make it more interesting for the reader. These changes have focused around varying sentence lengths and adding detail such as alliterative adjectives. Here is an example that James has written based on a writing motivation around discovering a dinosaur. We added detail to it collaboratively as a writing group.

Velociraptor

I opened a rattling door and stumbled across the box lying at my feet containing a heavy pistol and some tiny tranquilising darts.
Then I heard a rattling noise. Thud thud! I looked up into the glaring eyes of a 5 foot tall scaly velociraptor! It hissed and snarled at me but fortunately it was in a cage. Then I did what most people would do, I picked up the pistol and pulled the trigger. The dart flew through the air. Whoosh! It hit the velociraptor. It fell to the ground. At night the raptor’s eyes opened wide and its teeth opened. Click! The raptor ran down the street. I woke up then I charged after it. The raptor sprang into the air like a kid on a pogo stick and chomped a man on the leg. He collapsed to the ground dramatically dead. Then I remembered the darts! I pulled the trigger and the dart struck. Once again the raptor fell to the ground. Later, the animal control squad came along. Phew!

School Notices

Children's Safety

You may have been aware of two items in the news over the past week around children's safety. The first was regarding an attempted abduction of a child near Parklands School. The second was an item on Stuff and on the Neighbourhood Facebook page regarding a letter sent to parents at Somerfield and St Peters Schools from the Department of Corrections, to advise that a known sex offender was being released into the area.
As a school we have not been notified by Corrections because our school was not considered to be in the notifiable area.
We appreciate that news like this causes alarm and concern for parents. The unfortunate reality is that there are potentially always people living and moving around our community who may wish to harm children and what these two news items have done is remind us of that.
The best protection parents can give their children is to talk with them about personal safety, and in particular about how to act and respond to potential threats when they are out in the local community without an adult.
NZ Police have some tips about Keeping Children Safe, as does the website Kiwi Families and we encourage you to regularly discuss your family's plan and expectations around what you want your children to do to help to keep them safe.

Absences:

Phone: 3371404, txt 02102794107 for the office.  Or email office@beckenham.school.nz

Scholastic Book Orders:

Unfortunately due to an error on the website orders for the latest Scholastic book issue, some of the ordered books will be delivered to school.  This is not our preferred option and has previously been removed from the website by Scholastic.  It will NOT be available on any future issues.  The only option is to have the books delivered to an alternative address, e.g. your home address.
In an effort to reduce the amount of mail going through the office and the amount of wasted paper we will no longer distribute the paper flyer for each Scholastic book issue during the year.  Instead there will be a link in the newsletter to inform you that the next issue has opened and you can now order online.  Obviously you are able to visit the scholastic website at any time and order books, we will merely be placing a courtesy reminder when they have a new issue of books.
For those of you who have ordered books in the latest issue, and ticked the deliver to school option, you will receive an email when the books have arrived.

Congratulations to...

Juliette Gray who, back in April, competed in the Alana Haines Australasian Awards (for Ballet),  held every 2 years and biggest comp in Australasia held in Wellington. 163 juniors competed and Juliette was one of the 11 finalists and received the Audience Choice Award and the Auckland week scholarship - a week’s scholarship (including flights) to the Auckland Ballet Academy. There was only one other South Island competitor in the final 11 and the top three places all went to Australian students who are full-time at ballet schools. Congratulations Juliette - you are a dedicated dancer and your persistence and determination have paid off.

Kauri Whanau: Term 2 Week 5 Update

Thank you for ensuring costumes were back at school last week, so that we could perform our J-Rock for the school on Monday. Walking down to Hillview and sharing our performance ran very smoothly and we have received more lovely feedback. Last week we received this email...

Dear Beckenham School
I just had to contact you and say how marvellous I thought your Stage Challenge performance was last Thursday night at Horncastle Arena. I was there supporting Cobham Intermediate but your J Rock performance was stunning! It brought me to tears watching your journey. It was very cleverly done and entertaining and just lovely.
Congratulations to all involved.

Ngā mihi

72 professional photos have been taken of our performance, thanks to Bluefire Media. I will let you know shortly how these can be accessed.

Home Learning:

New maths home learning was sent home on Tuesday. This is due next Friday, June 9th. There were a number of children who did not hand in home learning last Friday. Please check to see that your child is back on track with managing their home learning.

Leadership:

Congratulations to the following students who were presented with leadership awards on Tuesday.
Bronze: Jordan T
Silver: Joe, Fergus, Caleb, Vita, Saraya, Mitchell and Lennox
Gold: Jordan H and Amelia Ca.
A special well done to our gold recipients, who will be re-presented with their awards at our Showcase evening on the last Thursday of term.

Writing:

On Monday, we welcomed Shay Hooray to our hub to share his experience with setting world records, in particular the world record for the most rubber bands on one's face! Over the next fortnight the children will be writing a story about a world record attempt. The idea from this writing topic came from a student suggestion in our end of term survey. It would be great if you could chat with your child about the record they have chosen to write about. 'Great writing floats on a sea of talk'.

Choir:

The Kauri choir are preparing for the South Music festival being held on June 20th and 21st. Tickets will be made available for purchase from the office at the Beckenham site, within the next two weeks. The ticketing process is being finalised and will be shared with you as soon as possible. Please encourage your child to practice the songs at home. The festival will be here before we know it!

 Zones Cross Country:

Last Wednesday, 24 children from the Intermediate Hub represented Beckenham School in our South Zones Cross Country at Halswell Quarry. Despite being a fine day, the course was a little muddy, all adding to the fun and challenge of the day. The children gave it their all, demonstrating our kete value ‘We love challenge’.

Year 8 Girls: 1st place - Kaia, 2nd place - Millie, 4th place Daisy
Year 8 Boys: 2nd place - Alex Braun
Year 7 Girls: 5th place - Tilly

Winter Sport:

Our teams were blessed with another fine day last Friday afternoon for Winter Sport. The Beckenham Red netball team played a close game against Aidanfield, losing their game by just one point. Another close game was played by the Beckenham Red football team, who drew against the Bamford Jets. Our hockey team and second netball team both won their games against Sumner and Lyttelton respectively.

This week's draw:
Hockey - Beckenham Black v St Josephs Pap Gold on Nunweek 1c
Netball - Beckenham Black v Avonhead A on court 31 (Hagley)
Beckenham Red v St Josephs Pap Red on court 29 (Hagley)
Football - Beckenham Black v Riccarton on South Hagley 6
Beckenham Red v St Michael’s Dragons on South Hagley 7

Buses will return to Beckenham via Champion Street again this week. There was a hiccup last week, which we hope to have ironed out, so arrival at Beckenham can be 3pm.
