Kowhai News Week 2 Term 4

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Wow! What a spectacular first week back we have had. The children quickly settled into their new learning spaces last week and have been very respectful of the new building site and how to keep safe. The main focus for the week was on establishing new routines as our school takes on a new layout. We have been impressed with the way in which the children have all maintained their focus on learning, even when diggers have been dismantling the Intermediate Hub!

We took this as a great learning opportunity for the children to understand how buildings are demolished. The children wrote news articles, poems and recounts along with creating sketches of diggers in action as they witnessed the demolition team sorting the materials into rubbish and recycling, We connected this to the waste that we produce here at school. Many of the children made the comment that they would like to reduce the amount of rubbish they create by not bringing as much plastic wrapped food to school each day. We would like to promote this as a way forward and we encourage you all to consider ways that you can make your child's lunchbox as litter free as possible.

Hub 5/6 came up with these ways in which to to do this:
* Putting items into re-usable plastic containers
* Purchasing larger bags of crisps and putting crisps into usable containers
* Using paper bags instead of plastic bags
* Unwrapping items BEFORE putting them in lunch boxes
* Making your own homemade baking

Water Bottles and Hats
As mentioned in our last newsletter at the beginning of the term, all children need to bring in a NAMED drink bottle and wide brimmed sunhat each day. If you need to purchase a new sunhat, see Jacky at the school office as she has a ready supply for purchase. We are encouraging the children to all drink at least one water bottle each day to assist them with maintaining appropriate hydrations. This will assist the children to have increased focus on their learning. Your help with this is hugely appreciated!

Inquiry- Adaptations
This term we are investigating the concept of adaptability. During this scheme of work, the children will learn about the different biomes around the world. They will learn how animals adapt to their changing environment and the consequences for either not adapting or not adapting fast enough. We will be linking this to how we need to adapt to changing environments and what skills and mindsets we need in order to be successful. This week the children are learning about the different biomes with all the teachers in the Kowhai Team rotating around the classes, teaching a specific biome.

Celebrating Success
This term, we are having a particular focus on 'We Love Learning' and 'We Get There Together' by encouraging the children to take more responsibility for their learning. Across the team we are providing the children with greater agency. This means the children are encouraged to make decisions about their learning and their next steps. At the Year 3-4 level, this is highly supported and monitored by the teaching staff to ensure the children understand how to make appropriate choices about their learning.
Being an effective self-manager (being able to work anywhere, with anyone),  striving to do your personal best, managing time, understanding tasks, having a growth mindset (being a positive and solutions based thinker) and setting and achieving personal goals are some of the key skills we will be teaching and promoting.

Each week at our team hui, we will celebrate individuals who are demonstrating these skills. On Fridays, these children will bake pizzas for their lunch (they just need to bring their own pizza toppings). Here are our first celebration certificates for the term. Well done everyone!




Calendar Art
Last week we sent home order forms to enable you to purchase calendar art. The artwork is currently on display in the school office. Do take time to have a look as, across the team, we have produced some SPECTACULAR artworks which would make wonderful Christmas presents. If you have lost or misplaced your order form, don't fret! Jacky has spares at the school office.


Playhouse Theatre Company
Today we were treated to a visiting performance from the NZ Playhouse. They presented a play to help teach the importance of cyber safety. The key learning points of the play were:
1. Keep your passwords safe and don't tell anyone your personal details
2. Only say things online that you would say to a person face to face

The children had a fantastic time watching this highly entertaining and energetic play.

Art Donations
We would love some donations of newspaper for Hubs 5/6 and Hub 7 to enable the children to make their paper mache sculptures. Please send any newspaper with your child to school and we will sort it out at our end.
Hub 5/6 would also love the donation of any old picture frames that they can use for the mounting of their art works.

Pohutukawa News Week 2 2016

Trip to Rapaki Marae

This year one of our strategic goals was that every child from Year 5 to 8 should visit a marae. We are very pleased to let you know that we have arranged visits to Rapaki Marae on Tuesday 1 November (Hub 14/15) and Thursday 3 November (Hub 21/22).

Outline of the Day:

We will travel to Rapaki by bus and be dropped off at the top of the road. We will walk down and be formally welcomed onto the marae. After the powhiri we will have morning tea and then be taken on a tour of the wharenui where we will learn the history of the marae.

We will have lunch and some free time down at Rapaki beach. After that we will make our way back to the marae for a formal poroporoaki (farewell) before meeting the buses.

We will leave from Beckenham at 9am and will return to Beckenham at 3pm.

We need your help:

This is a very new experience for us and we would be very grateful for your support. Each group will need a male who is prepared to speak for us at the powhiri. This is very important for Hub 14/15 as the teachers are both female. This person does not need to speak Maori - English is fine!

As part of the powhiri we will need a woman to reply to the karanga. Sherrilee will be with Hub 21/22 on Thursday and will do this for us. She is unable to come on the Tuesday so we would be extremely grateful if any parent is able to help us with this.

We also need parent help to support us with supervision during the trip and at the beach.

If you can help with this please email your child’s home group teacher.

Parent Donation for the Trip

The cost of the trip is $7.50. This includes the cost of the buses. This amount will be added to your school account.

This will be a valuable and authentic experience for all our children and we are very excited that they will have this opportunity.

School Camp

As you are aware Team Pohutukawa will be going on camp to Living Springs from 23 to 25 November.

Today your child brought home two forms that need to be completed as soon as possible. One is a consent form and the other is a health form. Even if we already have this information we need it updated for camp. Please also include any dietary requirements as Living Springs will shortly be asking us for this information.

Year 5&6 Choir (Glee Club)

The choir will be performing at the Christchurch School’s Music Festival on Thursday October 27. If you have not yet purchased tickets for the festival they are now available at Ticketek.

On the morning of the 27th we will be travelling to the Horncastle Arena for a final massed rehearsal. The bus will leave Beckenham School at 8.30am and return to Champion Street at lunchtime.

Sexuality Education

Thank you to everyone who attended our parent evening last Thursday. If you have any questions about this topic please email your child’s home group teacher.

Peanut Free Hub

A reminder that we are peanut free in Team Pohutukawa. We ask our children to monitor the ingredients in their lunches. If an item with peanuts is inadvertently sent to school we will ask the child to take the item back home and eat it after school.

A&P Tip Top Ice Cream Sales

The PTA are working hard to try and fill all the shifts for the Tip Top Ice Cream sales fundraiser at the A&P show in November.  At this stage we have lots of gaps that we need to fill to be able to run the fundraiser effectively. Principal's Patch

What a very busy start to the term it has been so far!

It has been the most different start to a school term that any of us have ever had! We did promise that we wouldn't start bussing our children to Champion St until we could guarantee that there would be building action starting at Beckenham and that promise has certainly been fulfilled.
Our senior students have begun working at the new site and they are loving the experience! They shared a video with the rest of the school this afternoon in assembly which I will arrange to put into next week's newsletter.


Some quotes from the Year 5-8 students about the new learning environment include:
  • I like the new, comfortable furniture.
  • I like the couches.
  • I like bus rides!
  • I like being with the whole of Pohutukawa in a hub instead of being in 2 separate hubs.
  • I like the big outside play spaces.
  • I like having new and different play equipment.
  • It's just awesome!

This week at our Beckenham site it has been extremely busy with the demolition of the Intermediate Hub happening from Monday. The building took two days to remove, and they are now finishing off the removal of the foundations.


All the the classes on that side of the school have grandstand views of the action which has been the catalyst for much oral language development and writing!

By Ashlyn: The noises are bang, crash, crrrr and it makes the ground shake!  The builders are taking the concrete so they can rebuild the classroom. I can see the digger making a lot of noise. I love the diggers because I get to watch them out the window. They are so clever. 
By Luka: The digger is making a crashing noise like it is raining concrete. The intermediate children are moving to Champion Street because the builders are making a new building.
By Archie: I see a digger eating a high verandah. Why are you smashing the classrooms down? It is raining concrete! The builders are smashing the buidings down to build a new school.
By Bailee: The digger is cool. It looks like a dinosaur and it sounds funny. It sounds like rocks flying from the sky and the builders are breaking some classrooms. They are building a new school.
By Aine: I am very excited about the construction going on. It all is, well I can’t really know everything but I do know that the big digger opens its mouth and then it lowers its mouth and closes it again. It also sounds like crash, bang, roar! The digger even works in the rain. It was raining concrete as it smashed the classroom! The builders are building another classroom. What is it going to look like?
By Keira R: The digger is a dinosaur and it makes a loud crack! Bang, arrr, smash! It is raining concrete! The builders are crashing the school they are working hard. What is it going to look like? Is it going to be red?

HRS have shared a plan (attached), which has been published as a a maildrop for local residents, outlining the arrangements that are being set up next week for access to the two building sites through the park entrance at Norwood St. The large green boxes on the plan are 'student crossings' with gates that will be able to be opened and closed to students at appropriate times, to ensure that vehicles travelling along the access are always kept separate from students who need to cross.


Recording the journey

We are looking for a parent who would like to be our official ‘rebuild photographer’ and document the rebuild over the next 18 months through pictures. We envisage this involving taking half a dozen photos from specific points around the school a couple of times a week. This will then allow us to display photos for our community, and capture the changing school environment for posterity. Thank you all for your patience and willingness to go the extra distance, quite literally, as you walk further from cars and find new routes around the school to find your child's class and to access BOSCO in the new home in the old R8/9.
It's been a fairly exhausting week for staff, and very exciting at the same time, to see this journey finally started.

Blake Grayburn - Year 2

Blake, you are a wonderful role model for our Hub. You consistently show the Beckenham way. We can always rely on you to do the right thing, at the right time, for the right reason, even when no-one is looking. That integrity shows in all areas of your learning. You focus hard to achieve your goals. You constantly strive to show your personal best. We are so very proud of how you have grown in confidence this year. What a true super hero! Ka pai to mahi!

Geometry

We had an exciting end to the term when we combined our Maths focus with Discovery Stations and explored directions and turns. We explored and created mazes, followed and gave directions and created pictures and buildings by following instructions.







Writing

We were focusing on writing about a character. Our goal was to make the writing as interesting as possible for the reader. We do this by writing an interesting ‘hook’ at the beginning, using adjectives and similes and writing an interesting ending. Here are some awesome examples of writing from our talented authors:

My Mum

Gender Diversity

Our values of ‘We Care’ and We Get There Together’ underpin the way we treat one another and are the foundation of the inclusive approach that we aspire to always practice.
As part of our sexuality education programme, which the Year 5-8 students are about to continue, we will be including gender diversity in our discussions about diversity. Our staff are getting additional support and are learning about these topics too. This will enable us to ensure our learning environments are strongly inclusive and supportive of all children, and teach children to be supportive and inclusive of one another.


We currently have a student at the school who is gender diverse and is in the process of transitioning (changing their expression of gender from their birth sex to the gender they identify with). We are committed to supporting this student, as we do all students. There will no doubt be discussions and questions about this from time to time in the classrooms and among students. We encourage you to talk about diversity with your child(ren). Please do come and talk to your child’s teacher or to Michelle or I if you have any questions we can assist with, or if you would like any information to support your discussions with your child at home.

#TheFairestOfThemAll       

An original children's play, presented by New Zealand Playhouse.

We are pleased to welcome back to Beckenham School, New Zealand Playhouse for their current show #TheFairestOfThemAll.  Snow White and the mirror compete for social media popularity. Viruses and rumours create mayhem while the princess learns about the value of true friendship, putting electronic devices down to enjoy life and the importance of staying safe online.

The Magic Mirror’s cracking up. Now Snow White’s a princess everybody knows she’s ‘the fairest of them all’ and he’s out of a job. After some bitter reflection he decides it’s time for Princess White to be sent back to the forest so he can once again be the mirror-to-the-stars.


With the help of a gruff goat-deprived internet troll, the Mirror launches a very 21st century poisoned ‘Apple’ attack to hijack her computer and cause social media mayhem.

When everyone turns against her, including her beloved prince, she turns to the only friends she has left, the seven dwarfs. Will they be willing to help her one more time and what shocking secret are they hiding?

New Zealand Playhouse will be coming to Beckenham on Monday 17th October, from 1:50pm until 2:50pm. The cost of this to the school is $5 per child. A request for a contribution to this will be on your Term 4 account.  All of our students will be seeing this as the Champion St buses will drop children back to Beckenham for the 1:50pm start.

Touch Canterbury Junior Trials
Sunday 16 October, Sheldon Park, Belfast
The Touch Canterbury junior trails for the under 12 and under 14 grades are taking place very soon on the 16th of October and we would love to get as many kids there as we can.
Important things  to remember are that the participant has to be playing at an affiliated module to be eligible. The participants also must be younger than the age they are trialing for by the 31st of December, (i.e. For under 12 the participant must not turn 12 until the following year).  The under 12's registration time starts at 9:30am and trial beginning at 10am. The under 14's registration starting 11:30am and trials at 12pm. St Martin's School Fiesta

Saturday, October 29th, 10am-2pm
Come along and enjoy our bouncy castles, home baking, Devonshire teas, face painting, stage entertainment .... not to mention all our glorious food including gourmet burgers (meat and vege), sushi, bacon butties, salads, waffles, snow cones and of course, candy floss and popcorn.
There will be a live auction of some great sporting memorabilia, some exiting gift packs for silent auction and the final opportunity to buy a raffle ticket and be in the draw to win some great prizes from local businesses. You can pick up a Christmas gift or three, plants for your garden, browse through our pre-loved books, white elephant and clothes, and external stalls or check out your skills in side-show alley - we have it all!
The Fiesta is our major fundraising event of the year and the money raised will be used to support redevelopment of our school hall.

Hats


To keep our children safe during the summer months we ask that all children wear a bully brimmed sunhat while outside during learning or play time. This will become compulsory from Week 2 of this term. Children who do not have a sunhat, will be asked to play in the shade during break times. Please support your child in remembering to bring their sunhat.



Art Gallery Visits

Thank you to all the parents and caregivers who have offered to help for this exciting trip. If you can help please hand in the parent help slip to your child's point of contact teacher as soon as possible.


Scooters and bikes

Please continue to remind your children about walking their scooters and bikes in and out of our school grounds. As we have limited space now, it is highly important that we keep each other safe. 



Topic Focus


We are experiencing a lot of change currently at Beckenham School, which has led us to explore the concept of adaptability. The children will gain understandings of how things can adapt in response to change. This week we have adapted to our new environment at school. Some children have adapted to an older brother or sister learning at a different site by being more independent. We have adapted too, by following new rules about where we can and can't play and by taking extra care of each other on the playground. 

We will be looking at adaptations in different contexts too. We will be exploring how we adapt to the different seasons and our new understandings will be presented in a wearable arts performance. To be successful at this we will work with materials, adapting them to suit a new purpose while following the technology process from design to completion.

Last term we created poems using language features such as metaphors and similes to help us describe a person we know.
