Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

Well - the Big Day is finally here and the sun is shining too, which is a real bonus.
Today, we have been hosting Ruud Kleinpaste (The Bug Man) and Riley Elliot (The Shark Man) at school and tomorrow, is the TREEMENDOUS MAKEOVER day!

Check out the video below, taken earlier this week, of Andy Lyons from Heathcote Valley Gallery, an uncle of some of our students, carving this huge log from our school oak tree, into a very special chair.

All of the CCC sports grounds are closed this weekend, so take the opportunity to come along to the Treemendous Makeover and help to make this area a beautiful place for our children to play!

Staffing Update for Term 3 & 4

As you know, Michelle Maule, our Deputy Principal, is currently on secondment to the Ministry of Education, working in the Special Education Team. This secondment was originally expected to be for two terms, however, the Ministry have asked Michelle to stay on until the end of the year. We are very proud of Michelle for the experience that she is able to offer at the Ministry to support other schools, and know that she will be expanding her expertise to bring back to Beckenham as well.

Sue Leadbetter, who is currently doing an amazing job of being Deputy Principal in Michelle's absence, will now continue on doing this until the end of the year.

That leaves a vacancy for a teacher to take the next New Entrant class that is due to begin in Term 3 and we are delighted to be welcoming Jo Smith back as a full time member of our staff for Terms 3 and 4 to take this position.

I have been very fortunate to have been awarded a Ministry of Education Principal Job Shadow scholarship to travel to Adelaide for the first four weeks of next term. I will be going to a school in the west of Adelaide called Lockleys North School and working with their principal, Tyson Grinham. Tyson has been the successful Australian recipient of the matching scholarship, and he will then come to Christchurch and visit Beckenham for 3 weeks in the latter half of Term 3. This is a very exciting opportunity and I am very grateful to the Board for the support that they have given in supporting me with this.

School Notices

Tuesday 26 June 2018 - no afternoon classes

This is the date that NZEI have confirmed that there will be a paid union meeting at Horncastle Arena from 2pm, for all primary teachers in Christchurch. Because we don't have a range of dates available to send our staff to, we do need to ask you to collect your children from school this day at 12:40pm.

If you are not able to organise any alternatives for this afternoon, please contact Jacky in the office as soon as possible and we will arrange for supervision of that small group of students.

Pyjamas and Breakfast on the Shortest Day

Next Thursday (21st June), the Student Council will be holding a Pyjama Day to ring in the shortest day of the year. Students are invited to wear their pyjamas to school and eat a hot porridge breakfast, kindly provided by the PTA. The breakfast will be served in the hall from 8:00-9:00 am. In order to minimise waste, we are asking that students bring their own named bowl; these will be rinsed and returned to the students before the end of the day. Spoons will be provided. In return for breakfast and/or mufti, we are asking students to bring a can of food to donate to the Christchurch Methodist Mission, so that those in need can have a hot dinner.

Electronic Music Afterschool Programme:

PYDT are looking for young people to be part of a fresh, exciting Electronic Music Production programme at the Te Koru Youth Centre. If you're interested in learning how to make your own Music on computers in a fun, social environment at a cool Youth Centre, this is the place for you! If You would like more information about this programme, please email studio@pydt.org, or give Tom a call on 0210503237.

While we have a big focus on Music and Technology here at PYDT, our main focus is professional, holistic youth work. We put a lot of emphasis into our programmes and run them to the highest standard, but they are always seen as simply a point of leverage for us to connect with and support the young people who come through our programmes. We have already had an amazing response from the parents who currently send their young people along, so much so that we have had parents tell us that they are astounded by the change in behaviour their young person has had while at home. Parents have also expressed their excitement that their young person is surrounding themselves with people who have their best interests at heart, rather than loitering around local businesses and causing problems.

This musical endeavour is just one of the many programmes we run here at the centre, including our widely endorsed Leadership Training Course for schools, Holiday Programmes, after-school Youth Hangout spaces, Disability Youth Groups and so many others!

Get ready for flu season – protect your whānau and community

Colder weather also brings along a nasty passenger – the flu.
As you may have seen in the media, it’s been a terrible flu season in the Northern Hemisphere, which
is a possible predictor for what we may see here.
Families in the Hurunui and Kaikōura districts can once again ensure their children have the best
protection available against the flu this winter – and it won't cost a cent! Young people from six
months to 17 years of age living in the Kaikōura and Hurunui areas (within the Canterbury District
Health Board) can receive free flu shots.
Influenza infection rates are generally highest in children and healthy children are the major cause of
the spread of the virus in the community. Around 80 percent of people infected show no or minimal
symptoms so you can spread the flu bug without knowing you have it – and the elderly, pregnant
women and people with chronic health conditions are particularly vulnerable.
Canterbury District Health Board is urging you to protect your whānau and the wider community by
getting your flu shot as soon as possible. This year’s vaccines have been specially formulated for New
Zealand and are expected to offer protection against the strain that was circulating in the Northern
Hemisphere.
While flu shots are free for under 18s, they’re available for anyone for a fee from a doctor, nurse or
some pharmacists. You or your whānau may qualify for a free shot as well- check out www.flufree.co.nz for more info and flu facts.

Kauri Whānau Term 2 Week 7: Weekly Update

Treemendous Makeover:

We are very much looking forward to Friday and Saturday of this week, when our Treemendous Makeover hits its climax. On Friday morning we will be learning with The Bug Man and The Shark Man. We will learn about the impact our actions have on the environment, as well as lots about our creepy crawly friends.

We hope you have got our makeover written into your Saturday diary. If winter sport is also on your schedule, we would very much appreciate you dropping in before or after, to plant a shrub or two.  Just bring your shovel, spade or trowel. The makeover runs from 9 till 12, followed by a sausage sizzle. Do come along and join the fun.

High School Applications:

We are currently busy writing school reports. These will be sent home at the end of term 2, in time to be included, where required, with high school enrolments. If you require yours earlier, please make contact with your child's home-group teacher now.

40 Hour Famine:

It's been fantastic hearing all the stories of tamariki participating in the 40 Hour Famine last weekend. Those who took part should be very proud of their efforts to help the children of South Sudan. The final step of the process is to collect in sponsorship money and return it to school. All books and money need to be back by Tuesday 3rd July at the absolute latest.

Art Week:

Every term we have an art week, which we are currently in the middle of. We love to offer the children choice in their learning, and have offered them a choice of projects for this week, (well a second choice for many as painting was the preference of 90%). The children are busy painting animal faces, drawing morphed insects and creating Matariki kites.  Drop into our hub later in the term to see what they have created, on display.

Choir:

I am writing this blogpost at Hillview, listening to the children rehearse for next week's choir performances on Tuesday the 19th and Wednesday the 20th or June. Tickets are now available to purchase from the school office.

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

This is a BONUS newsletter this week! Whilst the newsletter is normally only once a fortnight, we had a slight glitch in our processes last Friday which meant that a number of important messages got left out of last week's newsletter so this is a 'catch-up' edition!

The big event on the calendar for the next couple of weeks is the TREEMENDOUS Makeover Day, next Saturday, 16th June. This will start at 9am and run until 12noon, followed by a BBQ. We have over 700 plants to plant, and mulch to spread and we have a variety of dignatories and visitors attending, including Hon Eugenie Sage - Minister of Conservation and the Environment, Hon Nicky Wagner MP and Dr Duncan Webb MP.

Please do try and get along and be part of this momentous occasion! If you can bring a wheelbarrow, spades/shovels all the better!

There is one final working bee in preparation of this tomorrow from 1-3pm.
The three key jobs for tomorrow are the shifting of a very large log which will be carved into a seat once it is in position. As many muscles as can possibly be mustered for 1pm would be amazing! Following that, there is a log trail to build and the final logs to be cut and shifted. This working bee is ideally one for adults rather than children, as the work is largely quite heavy.

Two other key events happening in the next few weeks are the School Disco (Friday 29th June) and a Pyjama Mufti Day with a porridge breakfast (Thursday 21st June). Read on for more information about these events.

HE KURA KŌRERO - THE GIFT OF SPEECH

“Ko te reo kia tika, ko te reo kia rere, ko te reo kia Māori!”

The love of language. The power of words to change our lives and connect us to stories. The courage to face our fears and learn from the challenge is at the heart of He Kura Kōrero.

Kaiarahi is fun, bright and strong… but sometimes struggles with being brave. Join Kaiarahi’s adventure to find the courage to speak Te Reo Māori, be a part of the exciting journey and delve into magical worlds through language.

He Kura Kōrero inspires young people to be bold and brave when using Te Reo Māori in their everyday life, whether they know a little or a lot.

He Kura Kōrero is a new bi-lingual tale of wonder and delight from the same creative team that brought you Māui me Te Rā, Matariki- The little eyes in the sky and Matatihi- Maia’s journey of Bravery. This stunning performance explores Te Reo Māori through live music, puppetry, Kapa haka, song, and storytelling.

There is a cost of $4.50 per child for this performance. This amount will be added to your school account.

South Music Festival

Tickets for this event are now available to be purchased from the office.  Tickets are $5 each.  Each student has been allocated 2 tickets for each of the nights , i.e. a total of 4 tickets, which they can purchase.

Kowhai News Week 6 Term 2

Kowhai News Week 6 2108

Bug Art Extravaganza Day

Next Thursday, the Kowhai Team are having an Art Extravaganza Day. This has been inspired by our investigations into bugs, following on with a visit from Ruud Kleinpaste, 'The Bug Man'. We are looking at creating some amazing sculptures and outdoor art for everyone to enjoy. We would love some more art supplies (wool, fabric, clay, wire, beads or newspaper) so if you have anything spare you could drop into us, we would very much appreciate it.

Treemendous Makeover!

We have a very exciting couple of days next Friday (15th) and Saturday (16th June), with the Treemendous Makeover happening on the Saturday, preceded by a Treemendous Build-up Day with Ruud Kleinpaste (The Bug Man) and Riley Elliott (The Shark Man) on site at school all day. We have 800 trees to plant on the Saturday, with a sausage sizzle for all around noon.

Sleep Scientist

During week 8, we will be entering the next phase of our inquiry into sleep, which comes under the bigger umbrella of 'sustaining our well being'.  This will involve the children being sleep scientists. Being a sleep scientist will involve your child bringing home sleep slips to fill in or them to record the time they go to bed and how long they sleep for. They will also be given a small clock, which is theirs to keep. The students are required to fill out three consecutive slips in order to analyse their sleep patterns and formulate a goal to do with sleep. We would love these slips to be filled in (with your assistance, if needed) and returned to school the next day so that each child has a record of how they slept and how they felt when they woke up.

Literacy

Tied in with our Bug Art Extravaganza Day, we are going to be focussing on learning about insects during our literacy time. We will be reading all about insects and their features and how they survive in their different habitats and then we will use this information to write reports on them. It will be bugs galore! If your child is interested in a particular bug or bugs and they have some books or interesting information about them, then please do encourage them to bring these in. We would love for them to share their enthusiasm!

ASB Financial literacy

This week we have had a special visitor in our maths groups. An educator from ASB came to teach us about money!

We learnt about notes and coins and the difference between a debit card and a credit card. Now we know that a debit card uses our own money while a credit card uses the bank's money (and charges us a fee!)

Then we played a really cool game called "Look for the best deal". We visited a virtual supermarket and made good choices about what to spend our virtual money on.

We are very grateful for these financial literacy lessons from ASB.

Winter!

We were talking in our home group about winter this week. We have all been finding it difficult to get out of bed lately! We decided that we needed to remember all the good things that winter offers us and came up with this list:

20 GOOD THINGS ABOUT WINTER

  1. Snow! (if we’re lucky) and snowball fights
  2. Jump Jam inside
  3. Crazy weather
  4. Vida’s birthday
  5. Hot chocolate and marshmallows
  6. Snuggling up in bed
  7. Lighting a fire
  8. Skiing
  9. The fresh feeling on our skin
  10. Football
  11. Seeing our pets stretched out by the heater
  12. Matariki
  13. Sausage sizzles at hockey practice
  14. Soaking in the spa (or the hot pools at Hanmer)
  15. Hot chips
  16. Hot dogs
  17. Family winter holidays where it’s warm and cozy.
  18. Hot soup on a cold day
  19. Walking in the hills when the sun comes out.
  20. Macaroni cheese
That's all for now.
Have a wonderful weekend ahead!

Term 2 Week 6 in Pōhutukawa

Bbbbrrrrr.....thank goodness for underfloor heating. While it is freezing outside, it is toasty warm in our hub. With more wet and cold weather forecasted, encouraging your child to bring along a pair of slippers to wear inside is a really good idea. We have also been asking the children to make sure that their bags are securely tucked up in the cubby hole they select at the beginning of the day. When the cubby holes were checked by Sandy this morning, she found bags/parts of bags hanging out of them. This means these bags are may get wet. If your child brings home a wet bag today, a reminder about tucking completely into the cubby hole may be in order!

This week each class has been attending an ASB GetWise financial literacy session. The session gets to the heart of inspiring Year 5 and 6 students to start being much more creative and entrepreneurial with their earnings, saving and spending. Students explore the opportunity to start saving now and the power of interest while helping set-up and reach their very own CASH goals.
    Concepts covered include:

    • Setting up a savings goal.
    • Different ways to earn.
    • Establishing a small business.
    • Earning interest.
    • Using a CASH goal (or basic budget) to get the things you want.
The students are finding the session very engaging and interesting. Don't be surprised if there are talks around the dinner table about wanting to begin a dog walking business or questions about how much interest you earn on your account.

We are still in need of magazines and newspaper for our art activities. Your child will be handsomely rewarded for bringing in these items!

Our sleep inquiry is ongoing. Hopefully by now your child has filled in three sleep slips. These need to be returned to school tomorrow so that sleep goals can be decided upon.

Our new writing topic was launched today. This piece of writing is going to be an argument. The writing motivation the teachers chose to initiate thinking for this was a debate on whether Beau should be allowed to come to school or not. There were sound arguments from both sides, but in the end the kind hearted students were swayed to vote for the affirmative side, indicating that indeed, Beau should be allowed to come to school. Discussion around what things people are passionate about and believe in would be helpful. We are asking the students to choose something they are passionate about, then to write an argument about this, with at least four points, persuading us to agree with their point of view. Planning for this begin in the next day or so. Verbal discussions around this topic will greatly help your child launch into their writing.

We have a very exciting couple of days next Friday (15) and Saturday (16 June), with the Treemendous Makeover happening on the Saturday, preceeded by a Treemendous Build-up Day with Ruud Kleinpaste (The Bug Man) and Riley Elliott (The Shark Man) on site at school all day. We have 800 trees to plant on the Saturday, with a sausage sizzle for all around noon.

    Keep dry and warm everyone.
