Orana Park trips on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 September

On Monday Tracy’s home group, Rae’s home group and half of Steve’s home group will be visiting Orana Park. On Tuesday Katie’s home group, Gayle’s home group and the other half of Steve’s home group will visit the park. Steve's home group know which day they are going to the park.

Thank you to all of the adults who offered to help. To those adults who are assisting us with adult supervision, could you please be at school on the day your child is going on the trip by 9:10am, so that we can brief you on the Safety Action Plan.

They should bring a jacket in case of inclement weather. If your child suffers from asthma, please ensure they have their medication with them in a named plastic bag, with instructions about administration. Keeping Ourselves Safe

At the moment the whole school has the pleasure of hosting Constable Ross Mitchell, who is conducting some lessons for every class from the Keeping Ourselves Safe learning that we are doing. Keeping Ourselves Safe [KOS] consists of a comprehensive range of child protection resources to help students learn and apply a range of safety skills that they can use when interacting with others.
The school is able to access these from the NZ Police website. Keeping Ourselves Safe enables children and young people to learn and apply a range of safety skills that they can use when interacting with others. Students recognise the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships, and those who have been or are being abused are encouraged to seek help.
Discussing what your child has been learning at school will be a great way to reinforce the safety messages being delivered.

Year 4 – Keeping Ourselves Safe Egg Challenge

As part of our Keeping Ourselves Safe Unit, the Year 4 children are going to become chief babysitters for an egg! Yes an egg! The children will be responsible for the egg for up to four days and will have to take care of the egg at all times. The children can name their egg and create a bed or house for their egg. If the children want to leave their egg, they have to engage another person to egg-sit!

The aim of this activity is for the children to learn to look after themselves and others – a theme that comes through the KOS programme.

The children will hopefully get an appreciation of the hard work you do as parents!

This will be an egg-citing challenge, and an egg-ceptional week. I am looking forward to watching your children become responsible and egg-tremely great parents!

Thank-you for your co-operation!

Talent Show Update

Kia ora Whanau,

Over the last 3 weeks Lisa and Amber have been running practices for students who are interested in being in the Talent Show. These have been during lunchtime and some afternoons.

This week we have 2 lunchtime rehearsals scheduled: in the hall on Monday and again on Friday. If your child has a costume, please send it to school with them on Friday.

By the end of this week Lisa and Amber need to select 3 (groups and/or individuals) to perform at the school Talent Show on Friday 27 September 1.40 to 2.45pm.

Kind thanks for all your support and inquiries regarding this event. If you have any further questions, please get in contact with Amber or Lisa.

Kauri Whānau Weekly Update: Term 3 Week 8

We were relieved that we made the decision to move our ski trip on Friday. Many thanks to the ski parents for their flexibility. We have plenty of parent help for the 16th.

Thanks to those who brought their skis and boots to school, so the first-timers could have a dryland session.

'Choice' Programme

While the rest of the school are learning about 'Keeping Ourselves Safe', over the last three weeks of term Year 7 & 8 will be working through the Choice programme.  This programme empowers children with information and strategies to support them to make good decisions around drugs and alcohol.  This week we will be discussing what a drug is, and the reasons why people might take these. We will also be covering coping strategies and resources that provide a healthy alternative to drug abuse. Next week Constable Ross will be having three sessions with each home-group.

Speeches

We loved hearing the children present their speeches last week. We understand the stress/anxiety that comes with speaking in front of your peers and were so impressed with how well so many of the children embraced this challenge. On Tuesday, Sept 10th, our finalists will present their speeches in the hall, from 1:30 - 3:00. Parents are welcome to attend. All the best to our finalists: Lucy, Gemma, Ella C, Maddi, Vienna, Ben E, Emily E, Morvern, Florence, Winni, Meg, Millie J, Henry H, Ben N (via video), Ruby M, Mia, Thomas and Eddie.

Cashmere High Testing

A reminder that this Tuesday, Sept 10th, is Year 8 testing at Cashmere High. They have sent the following information:

  • 9.00am – 12.15pm in the Performing Arts Centre
  • Please let us know if your student is unable to attend – we have an alternative morning available on Thursday 19 September
  • Students need to bring: A pen, pencil, ruler and some food for morning tea
  • Students will be permitted to leave their bikes in a designated supervised area.   All bikes should be brought to the Performing Arts Centre
Children make their own way to and from Cashmere High. They are to wear their Beckenham uniform. We expect to see them back at school by 1:20 at the latest.
