    40 Hour Famine

    We hope that all who are taking part in the 40 Hour Famine this weekend and going well. We would love to see some photos of your child's famine in action. After the your child's famine in complete, please encourage them to collect their sponsorship money quickly.

    Period products at school

    The access to period products initiative aims to provide free period products to children and young people in all state schools and kura across New Zealand during 2021. Please click here to find out more and fill in a form to indicate if you would like your daughter to access free products through school.

    Missing Jacket

    Could you please check to see that your child has the correct senior jacket. Marcellus is missing his and it is clearly labelled.

    Koru Games

    We have many enthusiastic children who are keen to take part in Koru Games next term. A number have said their parents can help out, but have yet to notify Jenny via email. Once we have confirmation of adult support, we can enter teams and we really don't want to miss out on the limited spots available for each sport. 

    Fun Run

    The student council fun run for Kids Can is on this coming Friday. If your child is signed up, please encourgae them to collect sponsors. 

    Ski Trip

    Many thanks to the parents who have offered to help on our ski day to Mt Hutt on September 2nd. We have sufficient helpers and would like to take everyone who has already signed up. Please mark this date in your diaries. The children will be away from 6am until 6pm. The cost of this trip is covered by your school donation and a generours donation from our PTA. More details on clothing requirements will come out early next term.

    Current Learning Focus

    We are aware that some children come home full of news about their school day and what they have been learning about. There are also a lot of children who do not do this. Just to keep you in the loop, our current learning includes:

    • Literacy. We are currently integrating science with writing. Each Monday we do an experiement and during the week we write up the method, results, explanation, conclusion, wider world implications and wonderings. Last week we learnt about acids and bases and ph indicators.
    • Maths. Earlier this term we have been exploring the geometry of triangles, and position and orientation (navigating maps, grid references etc.). We have recently started a new topic on proportion and ratio, initially exploring fractions. The children also complete a weekly basic facts challenge. 
    • Positive behaviour for learning. Recently we have been talking about gender as part of Pride Month and also discussing issues around social media. 
    • Afternoon programme. Earlier in the term we have had a visual art and music focus. Last week we started another 'Learn, Create, Share' block, with the children selecting their own learning focus. They are working towards sharing their learning at the end of week 1 next term. 

    Treaty of Waitangi Workshops

    At the beginning of Term 2, students in our hub were lucky enough to participate in a series of Treaty of Waitangi workshops. These workshops were a fantastic introduction into the history of Aotearoa and understanding the journey our country has been on. Together with our regular te reo lessons, students are feeling inspired to normalise our native language through speaking, singing and incorporating tikanga practices into their daily lives.     It was lovely to have the weather warm up a bit today after what has been a pretty chilly week. A huge 'thank-you' to the PTA for the sausage sizzle today. We haven't had one for a long time and there was a LOT of excitement about this today.

    School Notices

    Whānau Rōpū Hui

    5:00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. on Wednesday, 30th  June (Kōwhai Hub) - RSVP here!

    Orders for the hāngī next Wednesday are now closed as they have reached the limit that is able to be catered for. We know that there may be lots of you who were hoping to order but hadn't got around to it yet, and we apologise that we aren't able to meet all of the demand this time. As this is the first time we have run this event, we are thrilled that there has been so much interest in it and we will definitely know to allow for many more orders next time. 

    In the meantime, please do still come along to the Hui, learn about Matariki, and meet a live eel!

    Positive Behaviour for Learning - PB4L

    ‘Working together to create a safe, supportive and inclusive community as we fill our kete for the journey.’

    We are continuing our implementation of PB4L at Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto. PB4L is a Ministry initiative, which is long-term and systematic. Our ongoing goal is to establish a whole-school change initiative to support positive behaviour within our kura. Expected behaviours are explicitly taught and reinforced by all staff across the school. PB4L supports our school Kete Values and prepares our tamariki for filling their kete for the journey - now and into the future.

    House Points

    House Points are one of the many ways we acknowledge living the Kete Values throughout the school day and to support PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning). When House Points are given to the tamariki they are also verbally acknowledged with which one of the school values they have demonstrated. The points are recorded over a fortnightly cycle. At Waiata, every second week, the House Captains announce the winning house. The winning house excitedly present their house chant to the rest of the school. The points are then cleared ready for the next fortnight.

    Mana Ake “Drop-Ins” are continuing…

    A number of whānau have already made great use of the Mana Ake “drop-ins” that are available on Wednesday mornings from 8:30 – 9:30am. These drop-in sessions are here to provide parents with an opportunity to have a private, informal conversation around the well being of their child with one of our Mana Ake workers (kaimahi). If you feel like you would like to attend a drop-in session, please book in a time via the link here: Mana Ake booking  The code to use is 88t39. Alternatively, you can contact Jacky in the office and she will make a booking for you.

    ESOL


    ESOL students have been experimenting with materials to find the best insulation. Insulation helps keep things warm. The tested their insulation on ice cubes, and compared how quickly ice cubes melted.


    Other students explored which materials were magnetic.

    Kahikatea Gymnastics Term 3 Week 3

    Kia ora whanau, 


    Kahikatea students will be attending 6 gymnastics sessions at Olympia Gym (Wigram) in Term 3. 

    Each session will be one hour long, the first session will run from 10.30am to 11.30am and the second session will run from 11.30am to 12.30pm.

    Adult Helpers

    We require 2 adult helpers per homegroup per day. If you are able to help please email your child’s homegroup teacher. Our adult helpers are not required to assist children during their lesson, the coaches and their homegroup teachers will do this.
