Principal's Update

Kia ora koutou

We hope you have enjoyed this shortened week and have some fun plans for the upcoming weekend.

Next weekend is the general election. Our school will be serving as a voting location, and some of our Year 8 students will be running a sausage sizzle and bake sale on site. If you choose to vote here, be sure to grab some sustenance to support our students!

New Entrant Enrolments for 2027

We are currently planning our teaching staff for next year. If you have a New Entrant child starting at any point in 2027, it would be extremely helpful if you could complete an enrolment form within the next week. Having accurate numbers helps us secure the correct staffing from the Ministry of Education and allows us to keep our New Entrant class sizes as low as possible for the best start to school. All Enrolment information can be found here: https://www.beckenham.school.nz/index.php/enrolment/enrolling

Class Placement Considerations for 2027

As we near the end of 2026, we are beginning our transition conversations to support students as they take their next steps within our school. Our focus is on ensuring these conversations recognise and build on each student’s strengths, supporting a positive transition to their next teacher and learning environment.

As part of this process, we will begin developing homeroom classes for 2027. If there are any considerations you would like us to take into account when planning for your child’s transition, please share these with us using the link below:
Thank you for your support as we work to ensure a positive and successful start to the next stage of your child’s learning journey.

Delay in Sending Team Blogs

Last week, our school was affected by the global cyber threat related to PHP (an open-source programming language). Over the course of last weekend, we had our school server rebuilt to ensure all vulnerabilities were completely resolved. Thank you for your patience while we addressed this issue.

Kōmanawa Turf Update

The artificial turf project located behind our Kōmanawa building began this week, and groundworks are well underway. We look forward to seeing the project take further shape next week. A big thank you once again to our PTA for their generous contribution toward this project, it is much appreciated!

Ngā mihi,

School Notices

Next week is Walk or Wheels Week!

We’re encouraging our tamariki and whānau to walk, cycle, scoot or skate their way to school. It’s a fun way to get active, spend time together, improve road safety and help our environment. 🌏💚

Walk or Wheel to School Week is part of the Good-to-Go school travel programme, which encourages safe, active and sustainable ways for tamariki to travel to and from school. By choosing to walk or wheel, we can all play a part in helping Christchurch reach its target of net zero carbon emissions by 2045!

Whether you join us for one day or the whole week, we’d love to see you getting involved!

Spot Prize Draw!
To add to the excitement, any child who walks or wheels to school at least 3 times during the week will go into the draw to win a spot prize!

Check out our daily themes:
  • Move It Monday – Blast off the week with an active adventure! Walk, wheel, skip or scoot your way to school.
  • Travel Together Tuesday – Team up with friends and whānau and enjoy travelling to school together.
  • Wacky Wednesday – Wear something bright! Look bright, be bright, stay bright! Remember to wear your school uniform, but feel free to add something bright and colourful to your outfit! ✨
  • Thoughtful Thursday – Help our planet! Active travel is great for the environment. What else can you do to make a difference?
  • Funky Feet Friday – Get creative with your feet! Decorate your shoes, wear your wildest footwear or show off your silliest socks. Glitter, feathers, gumboots, anything goes!
We can’t wait to see our tamariki and whānau getting involved, having fun and demonstrating "We make a difference!"

Let’s get walking and wheeling, Beckenham! 🚲

Head Lice

Unfortunately, we have had a few cases of head lice reported across the school.
Can you please check your child's head for eggs and live lice regularly and treat accordingly if detected.

The following link has very helpful information about head lice and how to treat it:

Kupu Māori o te Wiki

Kia ora koutou! This term we will be focusing on a "Kupu of the Day"! Across the term, we will learn the te reo Māori words for different classroom objects, animals, feelings, food, and colours.
Give these a go! "Nau mai te wero - We Love Challenge! He taonga te ako - We Love Learning!"
Have a look at the slideshow for our new words of the day!

Kahikatea News: Term 4, Week 2

 Kia ora,

Welcome back to a fun-filled and jam-packed term that is sure to fly by! We have been enjoying getting outside in the stunning weather in the lead-up to Athletics Day last Friday. Thanks to everyone for your support in ensuring your child has their sunhat every day.

A reminder that we will begin our swimming lessons in week 5, beginning Monday 9th November. We encourage you to work with your children on being able to dress and undress independently. It is a great idea to start labelling items of clothing also.

We were so impressed with the attitude, positive sportsmanship, and encouragement our tamariki gave each other during our Junior Athletics Day last Friday. Here are some action shots:

Handwriting (Transcription)

As a school, we use the Kinetic Letters handwriting programme. In Kahikatea, we aim to develop pupils’ accurate and consistent letter and number formation, focusing on shape and size before progressing to slope. Through regular, structured practice, pupils develop greater automaticity in their handwriting, allowing letter formation to become more fluent and less effortful. As handwriting becomes more automatic, it places less demand on working memory, freeing up cognitive capacity for pupils to focus on the content, organisation and quality of their writing. Our aim is for handwriting to become a natural, fluent process that supports pupils to express their ideas with greater confidence and independence. We write on our stomachs in the lizard position, which engages our core and gives us a strong frame.

We are all working on capital letters now, which is very exciting! If you would like to help with numeral formation at home, ask your child to write the digits 0-9. Many tend to write some (usually 2, 3, 5, 7, and 9) backwards; model the correct way and ask them to repeat.

Recorder:

As a team, we are developing our musical skills through learning to play the recorder. We have learnt to recognise and play the notes A and B, focusing on correct fingering, breath control and producing a clear sound. We are now building our understanding of beat patterns, learning to recognise and maintain a steady beat and play rhythms accurately. Through regular practice, we are developing our confidence, coordination and ability to play music together.
I have added some pictures of beat patterns below; ask your child to sound them out for you.

Kapa Haka:

We have begun our Kapa Haka sessions with Cath again this term. The students are really enjoying learning about the tikanga and use of the poi.

Art with Nicky:

We love having Nicky Dunlop, our resident art specialist, working in our team! She creates the most incredible visual art with our tamariki and gives them some amazing experiences. Here are some of the robots using pastel and dye that she has been working on with Sarah J's class.

Koru Team News Term 4 Week 2 (23/10/2026)

Kia ora e te whānau,

A very warm welcome back to Term 4 in the Koru team, and we especially welcome our families whose children had their first day at school either towards the end of last term or at the start of this term. Our newest children, in Stacey and Laura's Home Group, are: Frankie, Isabella, Kimaya, Lockie, Lottie, Ruby, Skyanna, Theo and Zoe. Well done, tamariki, for making a fantastic transition into the Koru team!

Congratulations also, to all of our older tamariki who have settled straight back into 'the swing of things' at school. We love your attitude towards your learning and your play. You really do show both 'We Love Learning' and 'We Care', as you share, support each other, work as a team towards a goal, and generally show care and consideration towards each other, as well as our environment.

Learning in the hub:

Kapa haka and waiata with Whaea Cath - the tamariki are loving their sessions with Whaea Cath! Three of their favourite waiata are: Motoka, iti rawa e, Pungawerewere and Ki Runga te Rākau. You could ask your child if they would like to teach you one or two of these waiata. The children are also thoroughly enjoying practising with the poi and some are proving to be very adept with this quite tricky performance equipment.
With this in mind, keep your eyes peeled for an exciting announcement coming up towards the end of this term!

Athletics:

Congratulations to each and every Koru team member for the wonderful effort at our Athletics Day today. We are incredibly proud of the children, as we know you will be too. Their skills and attitudes epitomised all aspects of our school values, as they displayed determination, confidence, resilience, and fantastic support for each other throughout each of the activities they participated in.

Tino pai rawa atu koutou katoa - incredibly well done, everyone!

Literacy Links (for families with children who have recently started school):

Hats, sunblock and drink bottles:

Thank you very much indeed for your support in ensuring that your child has their hat at school every day throughout this term. The children are being extremely diligent in both the wearing of their hats and caring for their hats.
Throughout Term 4, teachers are applying sunblock to the children, prior to their big play at 12:40 p.m. If your child needs to have their own particular brand of sunblock, for any reason, we are very happy to make sure that this is the sunblock your child uses. Thank you also for ensuring that your child has sunblock on before school each day.
The children are needing a lot of water as our days warm up. At school, we ask that drink bottles are filled with water rather than juice, please.

Cyber Safety:

Staying Safe Online: Online Grooming

As young people become more independent online, they can connect and communicate with people they don’t know.

Often this is a positive experience, but sometimes your tamariki could be being groomed or talking to someone who isn’t who they say they are. Netsafe’s advice explains how unwanted contact works, including grooming and what whānau can do to educate kids.

Kōwhai News Term 4 Week 2

Kia ora e te whānau.

Welcome back to Term 4 and to what is shaping up to be a very busy term indeed! Here is an update on what has been happening so far and what is still to come.

Athletics Day

What a fantastic day! It was great to see everyone giving the different events a go, challenging themselves, and showing our kete value 'We Love Challenge' throughout the day. From running and jumping to throwing, we were proud of the way the tamariki showed determination, encouraged others, and celebrated each other's achievements. Ka pai, everyone, for a great day of athletics!

Science

There has been lots of fun and excitement throughout the hub as we have been exploring the House of Science kits! Our team have had the opportunity to get hands-on with a range of experiments, make predictions, test ideas, and observe what happens with a variety of experiments, from wobbly jelly to sweet and salty cucumber. We have been looking closely at our results, discussing what we noticed, and reflecting on what we discovered along the way. It has been fantastic to see the curiosity, teamwork, and enthusiasm shown by everyone as we explore the world of science together.

Swimming

We are looking forward to our upcoming swimming sessions between 9–20 November! Swimming is a great opportunity for everyone to develop their water confidence, practice important water safety skills, and build swimming abilities.

A big thank you to all the parents and whānau who are coming along to help us during our swimming sessions. We really appreciate you giving up your time to support our learners and help make these trips possible. We couldn't do it without you!

What to bring:

  • Swimming togs

  • A towel

  • Goggles (if needed)

Pōhutukawa Team News Term 4 Week 2 2026

Kia ora koutou,

What a fantastic start to Term 4 Pōhutukawa has had! The students have transitioned well into the new term, are working hard and consistently demonstrating the Beckenham Kete Values.

As we are now in Term 4, a reminder that students are expected to wear their school hats whenever they are outside. These must be plain red or plain black, wide-brimmed or bucket hats. We also have sunscreen available in the hub for students to apply.

Term 4 is a busy one, with lots of exciting things happening! Here is a list of events coming up over the next few weeks.

Week Two

  • Athletics Day (Friday)

Week Three

  • Labour Day – no school (Monday)

  • Pōhutukawa Kapa Haka performance at Celebration Assembly (Friday, 9:45 am)

  • Jump Jam Competition Team – Nationals performance (Saturday)

Week Four

  • South Zones Athletics (Monday)

  • Choir Music Festival rehearsal (Friday)

On Wednesday, we held two athletics events: the middle-distance event at school and the long jump at Hillview School. Pōhutukawa students did exceptionally well, and they should be very proud of their efforts!

In class, students have been completing a range of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) activities. They have really enjoyed these tasks, and it has been fantastic to see them collaborating, sharing ideas and letting their creativity shine.

Growing Pastures in Chloe’s CCC! In Chloe’s CCC, we have been learning all about pastures and the important role they play in farming. We discovered that pastures are fields of plants grown for grazing animals and that they contain much more than just grass! We learnt that good-quality pastures are essential for keeping cows healthy and helping them produce plenty of milk. To put our learning into action, we planted our very own pastures for our cows! We are growing a mixture of rocket, alfalfa, amaranth and wheatgrass. We are looking forward to watching our pastures grow and seeing how the different plants develop!

Over the weekend, some of our students participated in the Crater Rim Trail Run. Well done to everyone who took part!
