Cheese roll onion choppers and ice-cream containers request.

 We are two days out from our mammoth cheese roll production day. I have two final requests.

1. Volunteers to chop some onions on Wednesday evening and return these to school Thursday morning. Please click here if you can help.

2. Ice cream containers (or similar - suitable for packaging cheese rolls). If you have a stash at home that you are happy to donate, please leave these outside the hall foyer either today or on Wednesday, morning.

Structured Literacy Workshops this week 

Thank you to all of the whānau who managed to get along to one of our parent workshops this week. We do apologise for the very short notice on these. Caroline had an opening in her calendar at the last minute and we took it. We are hoping to repeat this again during Term 2, with more notice than we were able to give this time. We recorded one of the sessions, and hope to be able to make this available next week.


Sleep Tips for Children

With daylight saving ending this Sunday, 4th April, we thought you might appreciate reading some tips for helping children to get a good night of sleep... We all know how important good sleep is for our children's success, and how poor sleep can negatively impact on learning and behaviour.
The Sleep Health Foundation has put together a number of tips for developing positive sleep habits and patterns for children.

We hope that you all manage to get some quality time with family and whānau over the Easter break.

Learning Conferences

Week 11 - Monday 12th April and Wednesday 14th April

School will close at 2pm on both days, to allow Learning Conferences to begin at 2:15pm.

Please go onto the School Interviews website and use the code kk64k to book your learning conference. The Learning Conferences are for 15mins each, except for Year 7/8 where you need to book a 15-minute slot, but allow 30 mins (it works!)

The focus of these Learning Conferences will be to update you on how your child has settled into the school year, and to give you a picture of the areas of focus they are working on, particularly in numeracy and literacy. 

Updating Contact Details

A reminder to all parents and caregiver's to please update details or changes with the office. This includes any changes in circumstances, addresses, or contact numbers.

Sunhats

Please remember that Term 1 and Term 4 are sunhat terms. Every child needs to have a school hat at school every day.

Mana Ake “Drop-Ins” are continuing…

A number of whānau have already made great use of the Mana Ake “drop-ins” that are available on Wednesday mornings from 8:30 – 9:30am. These drop-in sessions are here to provide parents with an opportunity to have a private, informal conversation around the well being of their child with one of our Mana Ake workers (kaimahi). If you feel like you would like to attend a drop-in session, please book in a time via the link here: Mana Ake booking  The code to use is 88t39. Alternatively, you can contact Jacky in the office and she will make a booking for you.

Lost Property

In the office we are building quite the collection of watches, and various other items in our lost property pile. If your child is missing something special, please come see us and describe your item - we may be able to reunite you with your treasures! During the school day, children and parents will also have access to the lost property rack for clothing, and the lost property bin for hats. These sit outside the library.

Christchurch Netball, in collaboration with Origin Sport, Mainland Football and Scotty’s Skate Skool are running a FREE multi-sport event on Sunday 11th April starting at 12 noon.
  • The event will be held at Hagley Netball courts in South Hagley Park.
  • The sports participating are Netball, Ki ò Rahi, Skateboarding and Futsal.
  • The will be a free sausage sizzle and fruit for lunch.
  • This event is for young people aged between 5 and 18. Please bring a friend with you, participants do not have to be currently registered with a sport, this is simply an opportunity to have a go, have some fun and enjoy a FREE event and some FREE food.

“The Peace Train bike ride attempts bring our whanau together and to break down cultural barriers, especially after the March 15 tragedies in Christchurch.

Join in your whanau and friends in any one of the 4 rides on Sunday 11 April.  Each ride stops briefly at 4-5 faith-based places of worship around our city. All 4 rides end at the Aldersgate Centre, 309 Durham St North for afternoon tea at around 4.30pm.

By cycling together and visiting centres of different faiths, we’ll be reminded of the thing we have in common and  the diversity we can celebrate.

Kōwhai News Week 9 Term 1

 Kia ora whānau, 

It was a gorgeous day today for our first house games of 2021! This week we finished our inquiry rotations exploring historical change in Aotearoa. Over the last five weeks the students have investigated our first travellers to Aotearoa, housing, toys, technology, fashion, transport and created their own ships and pa's using Minecraft for Education. We explored the past, the current day and talked about how things could change in the future as well. We will be focusing on art for our final few weeks of this term during Inquiry time. 

Some of our Kōwhai kids have been taking part in various sporting events over the last few weeks. Jenny has shared a few photos of miniball practise and the students who participated in a mountain bike race in Hanmer. Well done to Laura and Ben Stoney, Archie Chapman, Izzy Clark, Kaio Herangi, Kawa Taylor and Nick Reedy.  





Structured Literacy
Thank you to all the parents who came to the Structured Literacy presentations by Caroline on Tuesday. If you were unable to attend there will be a video available of this soon.

Some parents asked about the sounds of our letters in New Zealand. Here is a video that helpfully shares the 44 sounds of New Zealand English.

Kahikatea Newsletter Term 1 Week 9 2021

It was awesome to see so many families at our structured literacy information sessions with Caroline Morritt (Resource Teacher for Literacy). If you were unable to attend, we hope to have a recording of the session available soon. Caroline reinforced the importance of comprehension, during these parent meetings, with reference to  'Scarborough’s Rope'


Reading with your child

This is always a great opportunity to focus on comprehension skills. Here are some great ideas from www.speechpathways.ca/2018/01/12/reading-with-your-child/

“Use a variety of words to talk about the pictures

This means stay away from nouns (naming objects) and talk about words that describe (rough), action words (jump), locations (under) and words about time (later)

Highlight important words

Stress the important words or new vocabulary by changing your voice (make your pitch go up or down, change the rate of your speech by talking faster or slower)

Build on your child’s understanding

A great way to help your child understand is to relate it to a similar experience in his or her life. This will help them build a better connection between the book and something that has happened to him or her in the past.

Think outside the book

Encourage your child to think beyond the pages of the book to expand his or her thinking. You can help your child predict what might happen next, compare and contrast an object from the story to real life, make an inference and draw a conclusion, identify a problem and solution and sequence the events of the story by retelling what happened. These discussions will help your child to think, solve problems and imagine.”

Team Hui 

Each week, we have a team hui. It is a special time, where we come together, connect and celebrate. As part of our hui, we say our karakia and waiata. We have noticed a number of our learners confidently reciting these off by heart, ka pai! We have attached these below, in case your child would like to practice at home.






Building Connections


This week we have been focusing on getting to know more about our peers. We have been connecting with a variety of people and finding out about our shared interests as well as our differences. It has been great to find out new things about each other and to practice our active listening skills.
