Pohutukawa Team Newsletter Term 1 Week 8

Hanmer 4 Hour Mountain Bike Race

On the 18th March, Jenny went to compete in the Hanmer 4 Hour Mountain Bike Race with 3 of our Pohutukawa students. It rained, they got covered in mud, but the smiles kept coming and they kept going. They all had to dig deep at some point during the event, really showing a love of challenge and some real grit. Here are some photos of the day:




Winter Sport: Coaches Required

With Term 2 fast approaching, we are starting to organise coaches and managers for our Winter Sport teams. As always, Beckenham School enters teams into the Friday Winter Sports competition, and look forward to travelling to Hagley Park to play against other schools in rugby, football, netball and hockey. To enter as many teams as possible we rely on our supportive community to volunteer to coach/manage sports teams, alongside our staff. If you are keen to support us in this we would love to hear from you. Please email expressions of interest to Jenny at jenny.diggle@beckenham.school.nz. We look forward to hearing from you!
At the beginning of Term 2 we will be holding trials. Children who do not make a team or who choose not to participate will remain at school.

Huxter Mountain Bike Relay

The Huxter Mountain Bike Relay event is being held at Mcleans Island on Friday the 7th of April. While this event takes place during school hours, the children will remain the responsibility of their parents for the duration of the event. We know of a few children already entered for this event by their parents and a few more children seeking a racing partner. If your child is interested in this event, please email Jenny to be put in touch with another family who are looking to enter. Please also let Jenny know when you have made an entry so that we can provide a Beckenham sports top and mark the child appropriately on the school roll.

Alpine Ice - Reminder

As you will be aware we are planning a trip to Alpine Ice as part of our learning about our school values.  This trip will take place on Monday 10th April (week 11).  Thank you to the parents/caregivers that have volunteered to come along to help make this trip possible, we really appreciate it! If you are able to help us, please email your child’s teacher before Monday 3rd April 2017. Please indicate if you have sufficient ice skating experience to be able to help children on the ice or not. Lack of experience won’t rule you out, however we would like to take some parents who are able to assist children on the ice.

Art - Supplies needed

For art this term, the children have been working hard on sculpting clay totem poles. Each child is currently making three sculptures, each representing aspects of their identity. What amazing artists we have in the Pohutukawa Hub! The care and attention to detail the children show when using clay is impressive. Next week, we will begin painting the totem poles. If you have any old shirts, newspapers or egg cartons at home it would be hugely appreciated if you send them along to school with your child next week.

SPCA - Bake Sale

Starfleet Academy is a much anticipated learning opportunity in the Pohutukawa Hub.  It is a time when our students have the opportunity to follow and realise their passions in learning.  Two of our students have used their initiative and have held a bake sale to raise money for the SPCA. Cupcakes and muffins were on sale for a for a gold coin and demand was high! Congratulations on supporting this awesome cause.


P.E. - Striking and Fielding

Our current focus in P.E is striking and fielding alongside team work and tactics. By practising these skills and playing these games, our children are learning the key skills and tactics for games such as Baseball, Cricket and Softball. Here are some of our children in action:



Writing 

In writing our children have produced interesting information reports on a topic of their choice.  Here is a piece on Tui's:

Tui
Do you know that male tui weighs more than the female tui. If you want to know how much both tui weigh then you should read this article. If you do read this report then you will learn lots about tui. You will learn things like what tui eat, what tui look like and what the enemies are. Tui are amazing birds and by the end of this report I think you will agree with me.

 Tuis like to eat lots of different foods. They like to eat nectar from flowers and flax. They also like to eat insects, fruit and small seeds.

 They are lots of different colours depending on the light. They are mostly green, blue, purple and sometimes shades of bronze. The male tui weighs 125g and the female weighs 90g. The tui also have two white tufts on their neck under there chin.

 Stoats, ferrets, rats and possums climb to where the tui have made their nest and steal tuis eggs then eat them. The pests eating the eggs is bad because then New Zealand will have less of these beautiful birds, because the eggs won’t hatch.

 I’ve been writing about tui and I hope you have learned some amazing facts.You’ve learned what tui eat, what their enemies are and my favourite, what they look like! Tui are amazing birds, don’t you think?















Kauri Whanau Update: Term 1 Week 8

Leadership week started well yesterday. This afternoon we are very excited to have Mark Inglis coming to talk with our team about leadership. There are a number of changes to the usual programme this week, so please take note of the important messages below.


This Wednesday:


  • School photos at Beckenham. All children report to the Beckenham hall at 8:30. We should be off to Champion Street soon after 9am.
  • Those who signed up for HPV injections at school, will receive their first dose on Wednesday.
  • Year 8s bring food donations for leadership camp: Coast, baking; Mountains, breakfast cereal and Forest, a bag of fruit.
  • Year 7s, we need old newspapers and funnels for leadership activities with Tracy on Thursday. Please bring these in if you have them. 



This Thursday:


  • Year 8s come with gear for overnight camp. Jarred's black jeep and covered trailer will be on Sandwich Road. On arrival, please take overnight gear directly to his trailer and then all Year 8s, and their day packs, go to the school hall. Due to a damp start to the day, we will be using the school hall until 10:15am.
  • Please make sure Year 8s have plenty of warm clothing, including a waterproof coat and beanie. A lot of our activities will be based outside and the weather is not looking that warm.
  • Year 7 bring food for a shared lunch. No chips please. It would be great to see some savoury offerings. Year 7s will be working with Tracy on Thursday.



This Friday:


  • Year 7 report to the school hall at 8:50. They will be spending the day at Beckenham.
  • Year 8s will arrive back at Beckenham by 3pm.



Home learning is due this Thursday, due to leadership week disruptions.



University of Canterbury Kiwi Competitions (Years 5-8) will be replacing ICAS tests this year.

The tests, in maths, english and science, are a good challenge for our more able students. Entry forms are available in the reception foyer of Champion Street. Please get these filled out and sent back to the Beckenham office.


Basketball:

We are holding basketball trials this week. Our plan is to enter two teams in the Monday and Friday after school competition at Pioneer, that runs through term 2 and 3. We have a huge bunch of hopefuls; unfortunately only half of them will get into a school team. Those who miss out and are still keen to play, can contact Pioneer Basketball, a club who enter teams in this competition, with children coming from a variety of schools.


Choir:

Jarred has met with the children who are keen to be part of our Kauri choir. They will be getting underway with a couple of lunchtime practices this term. Next term practices will take part during school time, while the rest of the hub will be engaged in other music learning. If your child hasn't let Jarred know they are keen to be part of the choir yet, it is not too late.

Alpine Ice – Monday 10th April 2017

We are planning a trip to Alpine Ice as part of our learning about our school values and our topic focus of ‘Identity’ this term. Part of our inquiry is focussing on our values of ‘We Get There Together’ and ‘We Love Challenge’. This activity is an ideal opportunity for the students to be in a highly engaging and challenging environment with an individual goal to work towards. They will need to rely on each other to achieve their goals together.

We plan to visit on Monday 10th April, leaving Champion Street at 11:20a.m. and will be returning directly to Beckenham School at 3:00p.m.

Each child will need their jersey, jacket, gloves, warm hat, morning tea, cut lunch, drink bottle and any special items they may require, e.g., inhaler. Please note that there will be no lunch orders available on this day.

The cost of this trip will be no more than $15 per child and a request for this donation will be added to your school account.

We will need 13 parent helpers to make this trip possible. If you are able to help us, please email your child’s teacher before Monday 3rd April 2017. Please indicate if you have sufficient ice skating experience to be able to help children on the ice or not. Lack of experience won’t rule you out, however we would like to take some parents who are able to assist children on the ice.

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

Autumn weather, gumboots and raincoats...

As the rain poured down at the start of this week, we noticed a number of children without raincoats or gumboots, who were getting very wet coming to school. Gumboots are encouraged on very wet days, along with a pair of slippers to wear inside, and an extra pair of dry socks just in case!
Our PTA are happy to accept donations of gumboots AND raincoats that your children have grown out of, to sell on via the second hand clothing area. Please consider having a sort out at home, and bringing into the office any gumboots or raincoats that are still in good condition that your family doesn't need any longer.

Building Update

I was walked through the West Hub for the first time this week. It is a hive of activity with the internal walls being constructed, and doors and windows arriving to be fitted. The electrical and data cabling teams are working their way through the building to get these services in.

Citizens of the Week

Lucy Gray - Year 6

Lucy, you are a superstar in our team. You persistently demonstrate a positive and enthusiastic attitude in all areas of learning and you are a fantastic role model to other students. You are a self-motivated learner and constantly strive to improve yourself. You are are very thoughtful and have excellent critical thinking skills which you use to make insightful contributions to our class discussions. Well done for always putting 100% into your learning. Emily Eade - Year 6

Emily, you are an outstanding role model at Beckenham School. You ensure those around you feel welcome and you have taken extra care to look out for anyone who needs a friend. You always remain focused during learning time and have been developing extraordinary leadership skills to help support others to do the same. Sharing our Learning

Hub 20

Hub 20 have had a great first half of term, with lots of wonderful learning experiences happening. We have been working on a topic called 'Rising to the Challenge'.  The focus for this is around developing our own sense of identity, and finding common interests and skills among our peers.  We are working towards developing friendships, and being an important part of a wider team.  Part of our learning has been to challenge ourselves and see what we are capable of.  We have set ourselves challenges.  Some physical, such as running a three legged race, and to run around the field without stopping.  Some more academic, such as learning languages - these have been very popular!  We are getting to know what we can do ourselves, and what we may have in common with our peers.  Here are some photos from our challenges.



Koru Hub

Kia ora.  The tamariki and kaiako in Te Whanau Koru are continuing to be engaged and involved in learning about our Identity and our Whakapapa. We have enjoyed exploring the 'Me Bags' sent to school.  These bags contained items collected from home that showed the children’s family, where they come from and things that the children are passionate about and good at.
We have heard how everyone’s family is made up, and, what is important to each family.  Hearing of all the places from around the world that our families have come from has helped us understand that everyone’s past is different and we all share some similarities too.
Our investigation into identity has involved wonderful opportunities for the Arts and Te Reo. We asked ourselves ‘What are the ways in which people portray family or whakapapa through art?’

Calling all Parents, Grandparents and our Community - Good, used toys needed please

We run a fabulous play based Discovery time each morning throughout our Junior School.  In the middle school the programme is extended and broadened to cater for older children’s interests and developmental stages.  Both programmes provide authentic, rich opportunities for the children to explore, discover and investigate whilst strengthening their  essential skills and skills in many areas of the curriculum.

We would like to supplement and build the resources that are available to the children at these times.  If you have any good, used toys we would really appreciate them at school.  The types of things we are looking for are things such as tea sets, dinosaurs, crafting equipment, puppets, trains, cars, blocks, lego etc.  We can give these toys new life and they will certainly make a difference to our children. Thank you very much for your support.

Congratulations

... to the Beckenham students who competed in the Hanmer Springs 4&8 Hour MTB Race yesterday. Jenny Diggle supported them and said "It rained, we got covered in mud, but the smiles kept coming and they kept going. They all had to dig deep at some point during the event, really showing a love of challenge and some real grit. I rode tail end charlie with one of the students on the last lap, (his fourth of the day) and I had to work hard to keep up with him! I was so impressed with all of them and they all took the time to say 'thank you' after the event.


There was a mix up with the placings and so the team did not get the public recognition we think they deserved and needed after such a tough race. We think they should have placed 2nd or 3rd in the Mixed Super Junior category based on the number of laps they completed. One of the mums is emailing the race organisers to try and figure it out. The team really need recognition for their fantastic biking and awesome sportsmanship."

School wide photos are happening on Wednesday March 22nd.
The staff photo will be at 8:00am in the hall
It needs to be this early to ensure teachers can be back in class for students who arrive at 8:15am.

Buses to Champion St will be delayed for this morning. 
All Year 5-8 students will need to make their way to the school hall and assemble there for their photos.
Years 7 & 8 will be photographed first and will start promptly at 8:30am - their bus is booked for a 9:00am departure to Champion Street.

Years 5 & 6 will be photographed second commencing approx 9:00am - their bus is booked for 9:45/10am departure.

Please start reminding your students about the photos, especially the students who are regularly dropped off at Champion St and don't take the bus. They will need to be at Sandwich Road site school by 8:30am if they are a year 7/ 8 and by 8:55am if they are a year 5/6.

Disability Parking on Sandwich Road

Please remember that the two cones out on the bottom of Sandwich Road are the best option we are able to create for disability parking (primarily for Ferndale class). This parking is used every day by Ferndale buses, taxis and parents who all qualify for disability parking. We are not able to officially get this designated by the council, however, as the disabled access to the Ferndale class cannot currently go via our school carpark, this access is very important for these users. Please respect this space and leave it for them to use.


Student Council News

Our student council's first event of 2017 was a 'flouro' themed mufti day to support the volunteer firefighters, to acknowledge the amazing efforts that they put into the Port Hills fire in February. The children had a fabulous time, also using the occasion to have our first house event of the year. Over $600 was raised! Thank you all.


Sports News

School Duathlon

Friday March 10th saw a fabulous example of 'We Love Challenge' in action on Beckenham Park, as 60 plus Year 5 - 8 children gave their all, running, biking and running again to complete the school duathlon. While some entered to gain a placing, many entered for the sheer challenge of the event. A huge well done to everyone who gave it a go and crossed the finishing line. A big thanks to the parents who were marshals on the course, cheering the children on, ensuring their safety, but not able to give that hug as soon as their child crossed the finishing line. We couldn't run events like this without you. I'd also like to acknowledge the superb job that the senior students did as marshals. Watching the bike course, it was heart-warming to see the way they supported their peers and ensured that they went the right way. All the best to the 15 children who will be racing at the Canterbury Duathlon next Monday, March 27th.

Staff Profile

Charlotte Verity-McCormick


Kia ora! I love teaching at Beckenham, with our fantastically vibrant and supportive community and children. I have taught for around 7 years, in Melbourne and then here in Christchurch. My whānau is important to me, and I love spending time with them. I have 3 brothers, one in London, one is Australia and one here in Christchurch...and I have a fur 'nephew'...a gorgeous chocolate labrador called Ghana. In school, I especially love science, reading stories, and learning about our environment with students. Outside of school, I love to travel and am lucky to have been to almost 20 different countries, and I was lucky to live in London for 4 years. I also love going to see my grandparents, being in my garden, writing creatively and getting out for walks in nature. I also love seeing friends, and getting into the swimming pool for lots of laps! Here is a photo of my brother Liam, and I, in Sri Lanka.

Week One: 18th - 21st (Easter Monday is the 17th )
Papanui: enjoy a trip to the Margaret Mahy playground, a rugby skills session with the boys from the Belfast Rugby Club, plus the usual awesome swimming at Graham Condon and trip to Hoyts.
Lincoln: learn new skills with a session from Touch Canterbury and Canterbury Country Cricket and bounce the afternoon away at Mega Air!
Pioneer: Juniors get crafty and make and fly your own kite, swim at Pioneer and join the Seniors for a trip to Hoyts to see ‘Baby Boss’. Seniors get inventive with a session with Science Alive and hit the pool for swimming fun.
Westburn: learn new skills with a session from Touch Canterbury, swim at Jellie Park and take trip to Hoyts to see ‘Baby Boss’. Juniors - scoot, skate or bike around the Westburn Bike Park, using road safety skills, Seniors - have a go at Frisbee Golf.
Swannanoa: learn new skills with a session from Canterbury Country Cricket, swim at Dudley Park and get crafty with kite making and flying.
 Ashburton: sharpen your cricket skills with a session from Mid Canterbury Cricket, swim at the EA Centre, including fun on the inflatables and see ‘Baby Boss’ at the movies.
Week Two: 24 th , 26 th – 28 th (Anzac Day is Tuesday 25 th )
Christchurch Boys High: learn new skills with a session from High School Old Boys Rugby Club, go crazy at the Phat SK8 roller disco, take in a movie at Hoyts. Juniors get crafty and make and fly a kite, Seniors swim at Wharenui.
Rolleston: take on an orienteering challenge at the Halswell Quarry, Juniors enjoy a picnic and games afternoon at Parekura Reserve, Seniors swim at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre.

Mainland Football organise a Junior level 1 coach education on Saturday 18 March at English Park, 127 Cranford Street from 9am to 1pm.
The aims of the JL1 course are:

To be able to meet your player needs.
To be able to transfer the principles of effective coaching and a player-centred philosophy to your own coaching.

Building progress MUCH faster than expected…

Completion date well ahead of schedule:

We are very pleased to be able to report that the building work is progressing at a rate that is significantly faster than expected. Our original completion date of May 2018 has been pulled back now to be January 2018, meaning that the builders are expecting to be completely finished by the start of the 2018 school year!


Hall and hall foyer work to begin:

From the beginning of Term 2, the work on the recladding of the hall and the repair and re-roofing of the foyer and reception area will begin. This is expected to take until the end of Term 3 and will mean that the hall is out of action for Terms 2 & 3.

Moving to enable the next stages to happen:

The office reception area is also being refurbished as part of the hall and foyer work so from the start of Term 2 the office reception will be located in the Major/Minor room and the staff room will be relocated to Room 13.

HRS have told us that the West and East Hubs will be able to be occupied from the start of Term 3 (mid July).  At this stage, they will begin work on refurbishing Rooms 1-4 into the new library, admin and staffroom area.

So at the start of Term 3, Year 1/2 children and teachers from Hubs 1-4 will move into the West Hub and Year 3/4 children and teachers will move into the East Hub.

Whilst we could bring all of the students back from Champion St at the start of Term 3, we are going to be in the middle of winter and will have very little outdoor space as the hall and Rooms 1-4 will be fully fenced off by then, and the council regularly close the park in the winter if it has been raining. The Champion St site has expansive netball and basketball court areas, making it very usable during the winter terms for ongoing outdoor play.  Therefore, the Year 5-8 children will stay at Champion St until the end of Term 3.
