Junior Athletics
A HUGE thank-you to parents, friends and whanau for coming to our event, and cheering all the children on. It was wonderful to see everyone having fun and having a go at all events.

A big thanks to Caitlyn for organising it, class teachers and teacher aides, and to our senior student house captains, who walked and encouraged the children.

Koru News Week 4 Term 4

Junior Athletics - All

This term we will be holding the Junior Athletics (Y0-4) on Wednesday 21st November out in the park with a team briefing starting at 12:00pm and finishing the day with the famous house relays at 2:30pm. Lunch will be at the usual time. Parents are welcome to come along to cheer on the children. It is going to be a fun day in the sun so please make sure your child has their sunhat, water bottle, appropriate footwear, and a big healthy lunch to keep them fueled for the day. We look forward to seeing everyone in their beautiful, bright house shirts!

Inquiry Learning: Sustainable Materials - Y1&2

Last week we began our learning about different materials and their uses. We have been exploring them through play and were fortunate enough to have Carmel, Jacqui's Mum, come in to talk to us about her special job as an architect. A huge thank you to everyone who has donated boxes. We are now at full capacity and will not be requiring anymore. Next week we are moving on to creating miniature scales.

CCC, Art's Centre and City Day Trip - Y1&2

This term we also have a big trip to the city planned for Friday 23rd November. On this trip children will be going to the Christchurch City Council, Arts Centre and the Botanic Gardens. They will need to have a big healthy lunch, water bottle, sunhat, waterproof jacket and appropriate footwear for the day.

Hats - All

This term all children must wear a sun hat when outside. Please make sure that your child has a hat at school with their name clearly written inside in either of the styles below.
Farm Visit - NE

We have an exciting trip to a farm planned for our New Entrants on Thursday November 22nd and Friday 23rd. This is a natural extension of our Discovery theme for the past few weeks and links very well to Canterbury Show Day. They will need to have a big healthy lunch, water bottle, sunhat, waterproof jacket and appropriate footwear for the day. An email has been sent out to the parents/caregivers of all New Entrant children and this contains full details.

Fourth New Entrant Group - NE

This week we opened up our 4th NE class in Komanawa. It is great to see our older NE children stepping up to develop their leadership skills. We welcome Carter, Devin, Billy, Hannah, Misha and Skye.

Discovery Stations

We begin each day with our Discovery session and as you can see our hubs are a vibrant and exciting place to be. We also LOVE to use our outdoor spaces.

Welcome to the children and parents in our fourth New Entrant Class

Kia Ora whānau of our gorgeous New Entrants,

Next week we will be beginning our fourth New Entrant class.  We warmly welcome Stacey McLachlan  who is the point of contact teacher for the children starting school this term.  Stacey is an experienced teacher who has been working at Wharanui Primary School.  Stacey has two children at Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto.

From Monday, Rowe and Stacey's home space will be in Kōmanawa (See map below).
At present Stacey will work up until lunchtime Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and Hannah (our wonderful NE reliever) will work on Wednesday mornings.

Each afternoon, Stacey's home group will join Rowe, with a teacher aide, for the afternoon programme in Kōmanawa.

From Monday morning Rowe and Stacey's children will go to Kōmanawa to hang their bags on the hooks at the back of the building, walk around the outside of the building to the front to pop their drink bottles and lunchboxes on the shelves inside.  At 8:55 these children will gather in Kōmanawa for the beginning of each day.
Parents will pick their child(ren) up from their home space in the afternoon.

As you go in the double doors of Kōmanawa,
Rowe's homeroom space will be on the left hand side and
Stacey's homeroom space will be on the right hand side.
As you go in the door, Elizabeth's homeroom space stays on left hand side of Pūkaki
and Jo's homeroom space stays on the right hand side.

Please don't hesitate to talk to one of the team if you have any questions.

Kindest regards
Stacey, Rowe, Jo, Elizabeth and Sue

News from the Koru New Entrants

Pirate Day on the final day of Term 3 -
We had SO much fun 'yo-ho-hoing' and 'pieces-of-eighting' at the end of last term! Our Pirate theme ended with us all making treasure chest biscuits on the last Thursday of term (our thanks to the parents who helped out on that day), and then we all dressed up, in line with the pirate theme, on the final Friday of term. Alfie's Mum 'knocked together' a splendid pirate ship, complete with plank, canons, and skull and crossbones flag. We were also treated to a show performed by the Natural Magic pirates - we were totally entranced, and all very grateful. How lucky we were!

The pirates in action

Everyone joining in with the fun

We were all totally captivated...

Big pirates, little pirates - we all had a ball!

Beckenham's Got Talent:
Our hearty congratulations to Poppy Holton who made it through to the finals of the Beckenham Talent Quest, which was held on the afternoon of the last day of Term 3. We were SO proud of you, Poppy! What a star you are.

Discovery Stations:
We continue to have loads of fun and learn so much at Discovery Stations time (teachers and children alike!). The children practise the Key Competencies of Relating To Others, Managing Themselves, and Participating and Contributing during these play-based learning sessions. This week and next, we are going to be hosting two small groups of local preschool teachers, who would like to observe our Discovery Stations, and then our Literacy time between 10:50 and 12:40. Enjoy these photos from the last fortnight:
How many penguins altogether, we wonder.

Playing 'schools' at school!

Some clever engineering and sign-writing here.

What can you see through the window, Peter?

Reading's fine at any time, is what we say!!

We absolutely love our new Lego table - thank you, Cath.

Hut construction.

Reading a story to Peter Rabbit.

Now that's a very clever construction!

More clever constructing going on here.

Working together.

We were given a set of cuisenaire rods by a Beckenham family from some years ago and the children are thoroughly enjoying using them especially to form patterns, but also to help solve Maths problems.

More clever pattern-making.

We love writing, and take any opportunity to have fun practising!

And, of course, we LOVE numbers! Generally the children work in pairs (sometimes, in threes) to solve Maths problems. These problems are usually related to a theme, or an area of interest, which is highly motivating for the children on that day or during that week.

If seven mother sheep each had two lambs, how many lambs would there be altogether?

If Old MacDonald had five horses in one paddock and six horses in another paddock, how many horses would he have altogether?

If you put your hand up nine times and each time you received two pingpong balls in a jar, how many pingpong balls would you have altogether?

In Koru New Entrants, We Love Learning!
