Kauri Whānau Weekly Update: Term 2 ready to go!

We hope you have had an enjoyable two weeks and that everyone has recovered from camp. The teaching team has had a chance to catch our breath and we are enthused for another great term of learning, creativity and adventure.

Fundraising for Camp and Show Quest

Last term we postponed our Kiwiana Bingo Night following the Friday attacks. This is now going ahead in on Saturday May 18th. Click this link now to book your tickets for what promises to be an entertaining evening full of laughs and bingo fun. We also need your help to put this night together. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go to camp and once we have reached the camp target of $2000, the rest will go towards Show Quest fees.


Sport

Cross Country

Our school cross country is coming up on Monday of week 2, May 6th. We need parent helpers for this event. Please fill in this form if you can help.

Winter Sport

Weekly winter sport gets underway on Friday May 17th. We now have enough coaches. Many thanks to those of you who will be working with our children and making winter sport possible. Teams will be sorted in the first couple of weeks and then more information will be shared with you.

Basketball

We have two teams entered in the Monday after school basketball competition at Pioneer Stadium. Those involved would have received an email about this earlier today.

Passion help on Thursday afternoons


ShowQuest

During term 1, the dance passion group conceptualised and choreographed our ShowQuest performance and presented their work to the Kauri team. The children made choices on the parts of the dance that they wanted to be involved in and rehearsals started in the last few weeks of term.

The dance portrays themes of diversity and acceptance as it tells the story of a girl who experiences exclusion and cyberbullying. The dance is divided into four sections: the chair dance, cyberbullying scene, removing labels and the finale. All children are on stage in the last part of the finale.

All children are involved in this performance and need to be available all day and into the evening on Tuesday, May 21st. Please check below for your child's costume requirements. Tickets can be purchased from Ticketech.

Please see the following list for the costume requirements for your child. Let us know if you need support sourcing any of these things.

  • The Chair Dance - School uniform (red polo shirt, black shorts or leggings). 
  • Teacher (Jain) - Knee length skirt, shirt or blouse, tights, black shoes.
  • Cyber Bullying scene - Girls: black singlet and black leggings. We are providing a white skirt. Boys: white t-shirt and black shorts. Dance slippers or toe savers are preferred.
  • Removing labels - Black long sleeved top and black leggings, shorts or trousers. Children will be barefoot.
  • Finale - School uniform (red polo shirt, black shorts or leggings). 

Technology

Technology starts up again on Tuesday. Please remember that children need to be at school by 8:30am. Classes are outlined below.
Group A moves from Digitech to Fabric Tech
Group B moves from Fabric to Food Tech
Group C moves from Food Tech to Hard Materials
Group D moves from Hard Materials to Bio Tech
Group E moves from Biotech to Digitech.

Camp

No doubt your child would have returned from camp rather tired and with heaps of stories to share. We had a fabulous week away, full of challenges, new experiences and fun. A huge thanks to all of the parents who helped with camp, from the hard-working camp parents to those who helped prepare meals. We have laid out all of the lost property and baking containers in our maker-space. Feel free to pop in before school and collect what belongs to you. Over the next month, we will be putting together a camp photo-book, including descriptive writing from some of the children.  These will be made through Snapfish and will cost around $25. When the children fill in their camp feedback form (on google classroom now if they would like to do this), they will indicate if your family would like to order a photo-book.

Kauri Whānau Weekly Update: Term 1 Week 9

Ready for Camp on Monday:


Raincoats for camp: A number of children have shown us jackets that will not protect them if they are out in the rain for two hours. There are also a number of children who have not had their coat checked.  Most activities will go ahead if it is wet. The forecast is for two days of showers next week. If you are able to ensure your child has a waterproof coat before Monday, that would be great. We will be taking some spare jackets from our ski day supply.


Key reminders:

  • Check gear list for all that is and isn't needed on camp. This is repeated at the end of this post. Those staying in tents will need a stretcher or something to sleep on
  • Make sure all bags (including sleeping bags - if loose) are named on the outside
  • Arrive at school at the normal time on Monday
  • Keep daypack on back and leave gear bags on the basketball court
  • Mediation needs to be in a named bag and handed to home-group teacher on arrival at school
  • Put baking in labeled boxes in Maker-Space
  • Those who are making pasta bake dishes, these will be packed in chilly bins when you arrive at school.
  • Daypacks need to contain: lunch, water bottle (full and named), sunhat, warm hat, raincoat, inhaler (if needed), sunscreen
  • If parents need to contact us during camp, please call Nicky on 0276229403
  • Get lots of rest over the weekend and an early night on Sunday. We want fresh, well-rested children to take on camp.
  • We will be back at school by 3pm on Friday.

Cheese Rolls Mission Complete!

We were so impressed with the way all of our tamariki rose to the challenge of making 400 dozen cheese rolls yesterday. Their enthusiasm and focus were outstanding. A special thanks to our parent helpers and those who provided equipment. I'd also like to acknowledge Sam, Ellie, Gemma and Freddie who led the team with deep thinking, encouragement, and resilience. We have raised $1700 and my freezer is jam-packed with cheese rolls to sell, with soup, as another fundraiser next term.



Show Quest:

We are underway with dance rehearsals for Show Quest and have been really impressed with the attitude and effort that the team is displaying. Show Quest have asked us for permission to publish any photos they take during the event on May 21st. Please email us if you would rather not have your child in these photos. Please mark May 21st in your diaries. The children will be at the Town Hall all day and into the evening. We bus them there in the morning and you arrange to collect your child at the end of their performance or at the end of the evening.

Costumes:

Most of the children will be wearing either street-wear or school uniform in our performance. Some will need a plain black base of footless tights / track-pants and a camisole top or t-shirt. We will also need to make up around 27 'floaty' skirts. These will be pretty easy straight line sewing. Please fill in this form if you are happy to help sewing these skirts.  

Sport:

Hagley College:


Hagley College have asked us to share these bullet points with Year 8 families who may be thinking about enrolling their children:


  • We're a Designated Character School.
  • We provide a different learning environment and delivery models from other schools.

  • There are only 125 places available in Year 9 for 2020.
  • Criteria for priority enrolment is on our website.

Cheese Roll Containers

This message is for everyone who has ordered cheese rolls.

To save on packaging and to be kind to our environment, we would love you to provide a container for us to package your cheese rolls in.

We will put collection boxes outside the hall each day this week.

Please label your container with:

  • The name of your child 
  • Their team
  • The number of dozen you have ordered

We will provide recyclable containers for those who don't provide their own.

Your cheese rolls will be available for collection after school on Thursday this week. Many thanks for your support. 


Kauri Whānau Weekly Update: Term 1 Week 8

This week we are underway with training walks for camp and Show Quest dance rehearsals most afternoons. It was great to see how well the children coped with our first walk yesterday. Steady uphill climbing (and the heat) was challenging, and they showed good resilience.

We have an urgent request for parent help on camp. Over the past two days, three people have had to pull out as full-time camp parents due to work commitments. We don't expect, at this late stage, that people will be able to offer to come for a full week, but if you were able to join us for even a day or two, that would really help. It is a 90-minute drive to Wainui from the city. Please fill out this form if you have some availability from April 8 - 12.


Cheese Rolls:

We will be making 400 dozen cheese rolls next Thursday! A huge thanks to everyone who has ordered, especially those families who gathered high numbers of orders by asking friends and family. 100 of these dozen orders came from just 5 families. The children will be the workforce in this production business, but we need about 4 parents and some loan equipment. Please click here to indicate if you can help.

Bingo Night:

We have rescheduled our Comedy Bingo Night to Saturday, May 18th. Please promote this fundraiser among your family and friends. A new ticket order link will be sent out soon.

Camp:

Have you...

  • Returned your child's (Yr 7) Health Profile Form and those for camp parents?
  • Sent your child's raincoat along to school for checking?
  • Checked through the gear list that was in our last post and was also sent home in paper form last week?
If the answer is 'no' to any of these questions, please follow-up on this ASAP.

Many thanks to those who have offered to prepare a pasta meal for our first evening at camp. We have enough offers. Megan or Hannah will be in touch with you about this soon. Please also remember that we are asking each family to provide some baking for camp.

Camp Cost:

Taking into account the profits from cheese rolls and conservatively anticipating profits from our Bingo Night, we are requesting your contribution of  $170 per child to cover the costs of camp.  This will be added to your next account. This can be paid on a small weekly payment basis if that better suits your family.

Sport:

Winter sport relies on parent help to go ahead. So far we have no offers of help to take sports teams. Please fill in this form if you can help.
If your child would like to enter the Huxter Mountain Bike Race, please fill in this form and send money to the office by this Thursday.


Showing 'We Care':

Over the past few weeks, we have spent some time talking with groups of children about decisions they make when communicating via social media, out of school time. When poor choices are made, these have substantial repercussions for others. Our key messages are: if you wouldn't be comfortable saying this to them face to face, don't say it online, and do not post images of other people (especially ones that have been modified) without getting the person's approval. If your child is using social media, please reinforce these key messages with them often. Many of our children do not have access to social media. The legal age for a social media account at least 13 years. We totally see why this is necessary, through the dealings we have with our children under 13 who get into hot water through social media communications.

It was lovely to see many of our girls wanting to wear a headscarf last Friday to stand in support with Muslim women. Many thanks to Zeenat who came in and showed the girls how to wear these.
