Kauri Whānau Urgent Message

Kia ora everyone,

The Christchurch School Strike 4 Climate Team have notified us that there will be another student strike for climate change on this Friday.

In a bid to recognise the advancements that need to be made another strike will occur on May 24th from 1 pm in the Entertainment Triangle in North Hagley Park. We invite school students, teachers and staff to attend the strike in support of a local, national and international change to the system in order to ensure the future generations, the youth of today, and the leaders of tomorrow, will inherit a liveable planet.

In order to meet our sporting commitments on Friday afternoon, we need to know who will be attending this strike. Can you please email either nicky.dunlop@beckenham.school.nz or jenny.diggle@beckenham.school.nz  to let us know if your child will be involved in this strike before midday tomorrow, Thursday.

Kauri Whānau Super Important Notice: ShowQuest

We had our ShowQuest performances for the school today and got a fabulous response. Our performance is quite emotive and a number of adults in our audience had tears. Tuesday will be a huge day, so it is good that the children have Monday to rest up.

Here are our final important reminders:

Every child needs the following in their daypack:

  • Lunch (afternoon tea)
  • Water bottle
  • Bowl (or plate) and fork in a bag
  • Costume. We will have the white skirts. Those wearing uniform should have a clean school shirt to change into for the evening performance.
  • School jacket
  • Entertainment: book, small game, drawing etc.
  • Personal medication
  • Hairbrush, comb, hair ties
  • Makeup and small mirror (optional)
  • Cushion, rug (optional)

Everyone should be at school by 8:50 on Tuesday, in school uniform. We will collect any phones and look after these until after our evening performance. If you need to contact us during the day, please contact Nicky on 027 6229403.

We are planning to take the children out for a break at 2:00. We'll head to Margaret Mahy playground for an hour. It would be great to have some parents join us for this hour. Please click this link if you can help out.

Jenny has requested for us to have one of the early performance slots. We are hoping for 7pm. Our dance takes just over 8 minutes. That would make pick up time around 7:30. Children will be signed out from the Town Hall foyer. You will need to come in and collect your child. We will confirm the exact pickup time via text after 5pm on Tuesday. If you are watching the show, we will look after your children until it is finished.

We put together the slideshow below to outline the day for the children. Please view this if you would like more details.

If you are off to the Bingo Night tomorrow, we will see you there. Ticket sales are good and the organizing team has done a superb job of bringing the evening together. It promises to be a great night out. Remember loose change for raffle tickets. We will have EFTPOS operating at the bar.

Kauri Whānau Weekly Update: Term 2 Week 3

Another busy week in the Kauri Hub! We were proud of our children's attitude and efforts at the Zone Cross Country this morning. Congratulations to those who will go on the represent our zone at the Canterbury event later in the term. We are gearing up for our first dress rehearsal of ShowQuest tomorrow, Wednesday, afternoon. Please remind children to pack any costume requirements.

Bingo:

The Bingo Night is just four sleeps away. We have sold 80 tickets so far and would love to move some more. Please keep asking friends and family and it you are yet to book your tickets, get in now.

We are planning to raffle a grocery hamper on the night, but so far the contributions are rather light! We would like every family to contribute a luxury grocery item to this hamper. There is a collection box on our spotty table. Please send in your donation tomorrow or Thursday.

We also need to provide supper and require at least ten more offers of supper plates. These can be dropped off on Saturday afternoon or evening. Please indicate if you are help with providing a plate on this form.

ShowQuest:

Many thanks to everyone who has returned their ShowQuest reply slip or filled in this form. We are still waiting for 20 families to complete the form. Please do it tonight.

Dinner at ShowQuest:
We have asked Lucky's family to provide dinner. The children loved the food they sent out for us at camp. The Indian meal will include: vege jaffrani briyani (mild, gluten free, dairy free), chicken naan roll, Sai touch of spice bread pakora platter. If you do not think your child will eat this, please send along extra food for their dinner. We would like all children to bring a bowl and fork in a bag, for eating dinner.

Open Day / ShowQuest clash:
We realise that Villa and Girls High have open days when we are at ShowQuest. Our rehearsal slot is 10:30 - 11:00. Please email Nicky with arrangements to collect your child and drop them back, taking this rehearsal into account.

Kauri Whānau Weekly Update: Term 1 Week 2

The children are settling back into routines well this week. Dance for ShowQuest and getting underway with winter sport are keeping us very busy. Please read important messages about these events below. We have our fundraising Bingo Night in less than a fortnight and would love to see more tickets moving.

Bingo Fundraiser

Thanks to the 8 families who have brought tickets for our Comedy Bingo evening on Saturday, May 18th.  This is 8 out of our 105 families. We need more support for this event, which is directly raising money to reduce the cost of camp and ShowQuest. Please encourage your friends and family to come along. It really is a fun night out. Click this link to book tickets.

Many thanks to those who have offered to donate a prize to our hamper raffle. A reminder that these need to be unopened, nonperishable & not expired items: sauces, relishes, chocolates, sweets & pamper items. Please drop your item(s) off in the box that will be on our spotty table in our hub over the next week.

There are other ways to help with this event, including donating prizes. Please click this link to see how you can help.  If you are a Facebook user, please share this link.

Please do your bit and support this fundraising event.

Showquest

Excitement is building as May 21st, our ShowQuest day draws nearer. A reminder that children will be required from morning through to evening. We will bus the children there and they will need to be collected at the end of the evening or after our performance, from the Town Hall. Unfortunately, the performance order is not drawn until 5pm that day, so pick-up time will be notified until late in the day.

Tickets can be purchased from Ticketech.

Please see the following list for the costume requirements for your child. We have yet to hear from anyone who needs support to sort a costume for their child. Please let us know if you do.

  • The Chair Dance - School uniform (red polo shirt, black shorts or leggings).
  • Teacher (Jain) - Knee length skirt, shirt or blouse, tights, black shoes.
  • Cyber Bullying scene - Girls: black singlet and black leggings. We are providing a white skirt. Boys: white t-shirt and black shorts. Dance slippers or toe savers are preferred.
  • Removing labels - Black long sleeved top and black leggings, shorts or trousers. Children will be barefoot.
  • Finale - School uniform (red polo shirt, black shorts or leggings).

Winter Sport

Winter Sport starts on Friday 17th of May and continues each Friday until mid-August. Winter Sport is an optional event. While there is a competitive element to Winter Sport, the primary focus is on fun and participation. Many thanks to the parents who are volunteering their time to coach and manage teams; we couldn’t offer this opportunity without your support.

Children who are not participating in Winter Sport will participate in an alternative sports programme at school.

Football, hockey and netball games will be held at Hagley Park while hockey will be at Nunweek Park. The children will travel to their games by bus and a request for a donation to cover this cost will be added to your child’s account.

Children will be provided with a polo shirt, football shirt or netball dress to wear for their games. Hockey players will be provided with a stick if they need one.

On Winter Sport days, children may come to school in their sports uniform provided that they also have a red fleece or senior jacket that they can wear over the top whilst at assembly. Netball players should come to school in their uniform and get changed at morning tea. On occasion, winter sport may be cancelled due to bad weather. This call is not usually made until 10:30 and so children should come to school with their gear even on days when the weather looks dubious.

Gear List

The following gear list has essential items that your child will need every Friday. It is a part of their commitment to their team that they come prepared each week. Failure to bring items may result in your child being unable to play.

All children
  • A warm layer to put on after their game
  • Drink bottle
  • Personal medication (such as inhalers)
  • No jewellery should be worn

Football
  • Football boots
  • Shin guards

Hockey
  • Shin Guards
  • Mouth Guard

Netball
  • Hair must be tied back and nails kept short

The children will return to school in time for the end of the school day.

Science Request

We are in need of some 750ml plastic bottles (Pump style). Please send any you have lying around to school.

High School Info.

If you are interested in attending an Open Night for a particular high school, please check that school's website for details. We only share info that is sent to us.

Cross Country

It was wonderful to see so many of our children giving their best at the Cross Country on Monday. Their support of the younger children was fabulous.

Kauri Whānau Weekly Update: Term 2 ready to go!

We hope you have had an enjoyable two weeks and that everyone has recovered from camp. The teaching team has had a chance to catch our breath and we are enthused for another great term of learning, creativity and adventure.

Fundraising for Camp and Show Quest

Last term we postponed our Kiwiana Bingo Night following the Friday attacks. This is now going ahead in on Saturday May 18th. Click this link now to book your tickets for what promises to be an entertaining evening full of laughs and bingo fun. We also need your help to put this night together. Please click this link if you are able to help Leigh and her team.
Proceeds from this fundraiser will go to camp and once we have reached the camp target of $2000, the rest will go towards Show Quest fees.

Sport

Cross Country

Our school cross country is coming up on Monday of week 2, May 6th. We need parent helpers for this event. Please fill in this form if you can help.

Winter Sport

Weekly winter sport gets underway on Friday May 17th. We now have enough coaches. Many thanks to those of you who will be working with our children and making winter sport possible. Teams will be sorted in the first couple of weeks and then more information will be shared with you.

Basketball

We have two teams entered in the Monday after school basketball competition at Pioneer Stadium. Those involved would have received an email about this earlier today.

Passion help on Thursday afternoons

ShowQuest

During term 1, the dance passion group conceptualised and choreographed our ShowQuest performance and presented their work to the Kauri team. The children made choices on the parts of the dance that they wanted to be involved in and rehearsals started in the last few weeks of term.

The dance portrays themes of diversity and acceptance as it tells the story of a girl who experiences exclusion and cyberbullying. The dance is divided into four sections: the chair dance, cyberbullying scene, removing labels and the finale. All children are on stage in the last part of the finale.

All children are involved in this performance and need to be available all day and into the evening on Tuesday, May 21st. Please check below for your child's costume requirements. Tickets can be purchased from Ticketech.

Please see the following list for the costume requirements for your child. Let us know if you need support sourcing any of these things.

  • The Chair Dance - School uniform (red polo shirt, black shorts or leggings).
  • Teacher (Jain) - Knee length skirt, shirt or blouse, tights, black shoes.
  • Cyber Bullying scene - Girls: black singlet and black leggings. We are providing a white skirt. Boys: white t-shirt and black shorts. Dance slippers or toe savers are preferred.
  • Removing labels - Black long sleeved top and black leggings, shorts or trousers. Children will be barefoot.
  • Finale - School uniform (red polo shirt, black shorts or leggings).

Technology

Technology starts up again on Tuesday. Please remember that children need to be at school by 8:30am. Classes are outlined below.
Group A moves from Digitech to Fabric Tech
Group B moves from Fabric to Food Tech
Group C moves from Food Tech to Hard Materials
Group D moves from Hard Materials to Bio Tech
Group E moves from Biotech to Digitech.

Camp

No doubt your child would have returned from camp rather tired and with heaps of stories to share. We had a fabulous week away, full of challenges, new experiences and fun. A huge thanks to all of the parents who helped with camp, from the hard-working camp parents to those who helped prepare meals. We have laid out all of the lost property and baking containers in our maker-space. Feel free to pop in before school and collect what belongs to you. Over the next month, we will be putting together a camp photo-book, including descriptive writing from some of the children.  These will be made through Snapfish and will cost around $25. When the children fill in their camp feedback form (on google classroom now if they would like to do this), they will indicate if your family would like to order a photo-book.
