Kahikatea News Term 3 Week 8

Kia ora Whanau/Caregivers,

What a busy term it has been! We are fast approaching the school break and noticing that many of our tamariki feel tired and some have been unwell. Thank you for keeping your child at home when they are not well, this helps to stop the transmission of bugs and illnesses.

PB4L focus word of the week - Determination

Updating Contact Details

It is very important that we have the correct contact details for people who are listed as caregivers for all of our students.  If you have moved house, changed your phone numbers or have different people who you would like to have as emergency contacts, please get in touch with the office and update us with the new details.
Obviously, if other details concerning your child have changed, e.g. medical issues, then we would also appreciate knowing about these.

Woodwork

Megan's dad came to show the tamariki some carpentry skills. The children learnt how to use a hammer and nails. Some items that were created, included a bird box and a seat.

Staying Safe Online: Bullying

One in five young people in New Zealand have been the target of online bullying – it can happen to anyone, and it can be hard for parents and whānau to deal with. Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto takes online bullying seriously and would encourage you to chat to your tamariki’s teacher if you have any concerns about online bullying.

Staying Safe Online: Scams

People in New Zealand are losing millions of dollars to scammers each year – and this is just the figures reported to Netsafe so the actual figure is likely much higher!

You and your tamariki must know what to look for to avoid scams. Netsafe has put its best advice together to help you stay safe online and away from scams.

Read their scam tips here.

Swimming - Term 4 Week 3 & 5

Please check the Hero notices for our news about swimming in Term 4. If you can help on one of the days please email your child's homegroup teacher. Thanks to those of you who have already emailed! This is such a fantastic opportunity and we rely on parent/whanau support to help make it a success.

Class discussions- our tamariki have been playing an unkind game of Paper, Rock, Scissors where the winner slaps the loser's face. This is an unacceptable game and we have discussed the importance of looking after each other and keeping ourselves safe. Please feel free to bring this up with any class teachers if you are aware of this or any other unacceptable games and we can support our tamariki in making better choices.

Cyber Safety Information

The HDCA for Parents and WhānauThe Harmful Digital Communications Act (or HDCA for short) was passed by the Government in 2015 to help people dealing with serious or repeated harmful digital communications. It covers anything digital like text, emails or social media content.

The most useful thing for parents to understand about the HDCA is the way the 10 communication principles define what is good or bad behaviour online.

If you’re ever concerned about your young person (or you just want to brush up on your knowledge!) visit Netsafe’s Guide to the HDCA.

Kahikatea News Term 3 Week 2

Kia ora e te whānau,

What a lovely two weeks back of Term 3. We have noticed that the children are positively growing in physical and social-emotional skills. We have loved seeing the smiley faces and the "Good morning!". If you have any concerns or questions, please make sure to speak with your child's homegroup teacher.

Timetable

We have made some changes to the timetable this term to meet the needs of our tamariki, this means giving us more time to incorporate wellbeing activities in the morning (such as mindfulness, yoga, body percussion, etc.) without taking away learning time. The children have adjusted super quickly and smoothly to the new timetable and enjoyed having a "sneaky snack" after the fitness break in the morning. Ka mau te wehi - Awesome work!

Hillview Cross Country Challenge

A massive thank you to the parent helpers who supported the Hillview Cross Country event, your help made a huge difference to us. We are very proud of the children as they participated amazingly at the event.

Calendar Art

Just a quick heads-up that we are underway with creating our Calendar Art, and you may receive an email later this term about ordering products with your child's art printed on them. More details to come.

Lunchbox food

We really appreciate the fresh fruit and vegetables that have been coming to school in the tamariki's lunchboxes. This makes a difference to their intake of nutrients essential for a healthy body.

Arty Shapes

Our maths unit in the last two weeks is called Arty Shapes, looking at shape properties such as sides, corners, etc. Check out our shape creations!

Kahikatea News Term 2 Week 10

Kia ora e te whānau,

We have had some fun events over the last couple of weeks, including our wonderful Matariki evening, and our second group's trip to Clip and Climb.

We also celebrated Sandy at her farewell on Wednesday. It was lovely to hear from educators, students and whānau about the impact Sandy has had at Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto. We wish her all the best in her new role.

Matariki

We loved seeing so many of our tamariki bursting through the door with excitement after a busy day at school. We had lots of activities happening throughout the hubs, and it was wonderful to see learners and their whānau engaging in these.

It is a special time to connect with our community and we appreciated seeing so many of you despite the cold weather.

Matariki Maths

Our learners have explored Matariki through a variety of subject areas over the last two weeks. One of these was maths. Some awesome 2D and 3D stars were created!

Clip and Climb

Our second groups to attend Clip and Climb also had a blast! For some, this was a new activity which was a little scary, and for others new goals were met. We were really proud of all of our learners.

Thanks to all of our Clip and Climb whānau helpers for your support.

Literacy Links

When we teach our learners to read and to spell, we focus on using the 'pure' sounds. For example when learning to read the word 'Sam' we sound the word out as "sssss-aaaaa-mmmm, Sam". See below for a great explanation by Emma Nahna (speech-language therapist) of the pure sounds of New Zealand English and their importance in learning to read and write.

Emma also has some other awesome videos on her YouTube channel, such as how to teach Heart Words and consonant blends, for those of you who would like some more in-depth information in these areas.

This was our final blog for Term 2! If you come across any library or reading books at home over the holidays we would love to have these back next term :). We hope you all have a safe and restful break, and we look forward to seeing everyone again on Monday 22nd July.

Ngā mihi nui,

So many exciting things have been happening in the Kahikatea hub this week!

Opera

The New Zealand opera's "Opera in Schools" came to Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto and performed 'The Elixir of Love'.

Baking

Greta's mum Lauren came to show Fisher house and Tennyson how to make some delicious scones. The tamariki learnt how to measure ingredients accurately. The scones smelt delicious.

Ella and Amber's homegroup had their trip to Clip and Climb. The children showed determination, resilience and teamwork. Everyone had so much fun! What a great afternoon!

Cyber Safety

Awareness of Online Harm
Many parents didn’t grow up with the internet, so it can be hard to imagine how tamariki may use it. But digital technology is a key part of our young people’s lives these days. They use it for learning, communicating and entertainment.

Netsafe has released research that looked into parental awareness of children’s experiences of online risks and harm. The research found a mismatch between parents’ awareness and their children’s experiences of upsetting online content.

To check out the research, and other Netsafe resources, visit this link.

PB4L

Our PB4L focus of the week is determination. Here are the links to a short story about determination and a catchy song.

Maths

Our maths focus of the week has been learning how to measure accurately. The children have learnt to measure in non-standard units (e.g. plastic multilink cubes) and also learnt how to use a ruler.

Here are some helpful resources:

Nuts!

Just a reminder that due to serious allergies in the hub, we are a nut free zone. Please can children not bring in nut products such as peanut butter sandwiches and coconut snacks. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

                               Have a great weekend everyone!
