Beckenham School Newsletter Term 3 Tuesday 26th September

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

Kia ora whānau
This is technically last Friday's newsletter which didn't get sent as I was away at the New Zealand Principal's conference.

We will send out another short newsletter this Friday on the last day of term.

Building Update:

Our hall renovation is moving along and we have been told we will have the hall back in use by the end of week 3 of next term (in time for the PTA School Disco on Friday 3rd November).

Unfortunately the renovation of the old verandah block has had significant delays, and won't be ready for the admin team and staff room to move into during these holidays. So, in order to vacate the West Hub for our returning Year 5/6 team, we are moving the admin and staffroom into the old Room 10/11 (backing onto the staff carpark). This building is currently being renovated, but we've been told we can move into that in the second week of the holidays,on Tuesday 10th October.

The exciting news that we can 100% confirm is that the Champion St teams - Year 5/6 and Y7/8, will be returning to the Beckenham site for their learning from the start of next term. The movers will be in on Wed 11th October to move all of the furniture and equipment from Champion St back to Beckenham and the teachers will be in during the second week of the holidays, preparing for the children to start in their new spaces at the beginning of next term. It's hard to believe that we have been at Champion St for a year, and that we only have three more days of busing to Champion St left! This is an appropriate time to again thank all of the parents who trusted us to make this unusual solution to our building challenges work. Our teachers and children in the Y5-8 teams have had a wonderful 12 months at Champion St and we have been very grateful to the Ministry of Education for making this site available to us.

We are really starting to see the light at the end of the building tunnel now and it is very exciting to be having all of our students back on our home site next term.

Thank you all for your continued patience as we go through the final term of building.

Sharing our Learning

Ferndale Hub

This term we have been busy with our Technology learning focus - preparing for our Ferndale School Market Day.  We have been learning about the design process with having a question (what will be a good product to sell at Market Day), planning (what will we do and how), create (make), improve (can we make it any better).  We have made soap and through the process we decided to add colour as white was a little plain.  We also made bath bombs.  Our initial batch did not work, so we had to do more research and our second batch was a success!  Our market day is being held today - fingers crossed we manage to sell all our products!

Wellbeing Focus This Fortnight

Over recent weeks, we have looked at how being part of family and friendship groups supports our wellbeing. We have shared how we care for our family and our friends. We have learnt that being with family and friends requires working as a team, and using lots of communication, caring and compromise.

We have explored how good friends and family listen to each other actively. Watch this clip and practise at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWe_ogA5YCU

Each family is different, and we celebrate that difference. Many children have shared some of the special things their family do, in terms of activities or spending certain parts of the day or week together.
Ideas to reflect on or discuss at home:
What special or fun things do you do together with your family?
What matters in your family?
Who are you grateful for in your family and what do you enjoy about them? Make a point of telling them or writing a note to share your thoughts with them.

BOT News

News from the Beckenham School  Board of Trustees

Our Board of Trustees meets monthly.  This board is made up of elected representatives from the parent community, a staff representative, and Sandy, the Principal.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for governing the school and setting its direction, including curriculum, staff, property, health and safety, finance and administration. The board makes decisions that the principal and teachers then put in place.

Did you know there is a Board of Trustees page on the school website?  Beckenham School Board of Trustees

At our last meeting the Board confirmed the term dates for 2018.  These have been published in the school newsletter and on the school website.

We also discussed establishing an outdoor spaces working group.  A steering group is being formed with members of Board, PTA, teaching staff as we start planning for our outdoor spaces.  In the near future we will will be asking you and your families for your ideas and suggestions.   How do you want our outdoor spaces to work?

A process of consultation is about to embark on the naming of our fabulous new buildings.  We plan to have an official opening and blessing once all the buildings are finished.  Save the date - 15 December 2017.

Thank you to everyone who responded to the Learning Conference surveys.  Your feedback is so valuable as we look at our processes and how we respond to our learning community.

With the upcoming Board of Trustee elections, we invite parents to take this opportunity to think about standing for the Board.  It is a wonderful opportunity to work with other people who are passionate about making Beckenham School a fantastic place for our children to thrive and grow.  Feel free to look at the Beckenham school website for more information, or approach any current BOT members and we will happily share our experience with you.

Building Update

Slow progress seems to be the order of the day at the moment! However, this is not changing the fact that our Champion St classes will DEFINITELY be returning to Beckenham from the start of Term 4. So only three weeks left of catching buses every day! Hooray! We are working with a moving company to shift most of the Champion st resources back to Beckenham in the second week of the holidays. However, we will be looking for offers of help from parents who have a trailer, to pick up some really bulky items like picnic tables and benches, ideally during the last week of this term. If you can help, please call Jacky or email her at office@beckenham.school.nz

Citizen of the Week

Felix, you are an exemplary citizen in the Kauri whānau, demonstrating our school kete values in bucket loads every day at school. You have a strong sense of what is right and hold high expectations of yourself; integrity, empathy and good manners are embedded in your character. Felix, you are keen to get involved in extracurricular activities and often offer to help others when you recognise a need. You demonstrate a genuine curiosity and desire to learn and show pride in your achievements. Thank you for the contributions you make to our learning community.

Sharing our Learning

Kauri Team

Last Wednesday, 70 bleary eyed, yet excited, Year 7 & 8 children gathered at 6:20am to embark on a day that put ‘We Love Challenge’ into action. 90 minutes later our bus emerged on the other side of the cloud that had descended over Canterbury, into a sparkling blue sky day, surrounded by the snowy slopes of Mount Hutt. What an awesome day we had. A 90 minute lesson set the foundation for a day of skill development. Persistence, practise and a positive attitude reaped rewards, whether that was on the beginners’ slope, venturing up the chairlift for the first time or exploring new slopes. Our able and willing parent helpers allowed for a day where everyone could meet challenge at their level. As the bus arrived back at school 12 hours later, 70 tired yet happy children descended, full of stories to share from their day of challenge on the slopes.

By spending Years 7 & 8 at Beckenham School, you open the door on many adventures. Adventures where everyone gets to take part. We encourage the children to seize opportunities, rather than let opportunities pass them by. Our day at Mt Hutt was just one example of this.

Kowhai Team

Netball

We have had a very successful season of netball in the Kowhai team. We managed to put together 2 teams this year, the Beckenham A team and the Beckenham B team. All the children have had a great experience and have hugely improved their netball skills throughout the winter. Well done to all those children and a big thank you to Jacqui Cooper, Huriana Timothy and Rebecca Carr who helped to coach the 2 teams. We could not have done it without you. Thank you also to all the parents who came and supported the teams even on some very cold and wintery days!

Calendar Art

Wow, what an amazing effort the children have been putting into their calendar art. Each home group has taken a different spin on creating a calendar masterpiece. The children have taken ownership of a their art to create a piece they can be really proud of. We hope you enjoy them!

Inspiration Stations:

Every morning in the Kowhai hub children are learning through different challenges and play. These challenges allow us to be metacognitive (that means thinking about our thinking) as we think deeply about how we are using our thinking skills to solve problems and be creative. All our activities are based around a theme of Change. These activities include:

  • Investigating how games and toys have changed over time
  • Researching geological and historical change.
  • Creating cars and making changes to our designs.
  • Changing shapes through tangrams.
  • Creating costumes of the future .
  • Upcycling junk.
  • Exploring maps.
  • Creating transformers.

Ask us about what we are learning in our inspiration stations. You will be amazed!

Kids In Town

This week both the Koru and the Kowhai Kapa Haka groups performed at the Art Gallery as part of the Kids In Town programme. Sherrilee and the Kapa Haka groups all put on an amazing performance and there was a fantastic turnout of friends and family which was great to see. It was such a wonderful experience for the children and very exciting too!

BOT News

Have you wondered what the Board of Trustees do, or thought it might be a way for you to contribute to our school?  Here's a few thoughts from current Board member Rachele Allan.

In 2014 I was elected to the Board and have enjoyed a very eventful time; the achievements have been spectacular.  Look around and you almost see a revamped school with beautiful and well functioning learning spaces.  Inside the classrooms our children are privileged to amazing learning opportunities; literacy, numeracy, reading, culture, music, sport that all support a journey for our future leaders.

As a Board member I'm not involved with the day to day running of the school; that is left to Sandy and her team of experts.  Our role on the Board is to provide direction and be constructive in our involvement to focus on "every student achieving their highest possible educational potential".  We support our teaching staff and students through decision making and planning. We are responsible for making sure that the budgets are maintained and have roles in supporting and advocating for our school.  Skills such as communication, planning, finance are useful, as are a collaborative and team focused approach to meetings and issues resolution.

I am a passionate Beckenham School supporter but my priorities have changed and I won't be standing in the election at the end of the year.  We have about 10 meetings a year and some preparation time is also required.  In all probably maximum about 4 hours a month.  Not a huge commitment for incredible rewards and satisfaction.  I am very proud of the achievements the Board has made in recent times and I hope that some of you might consider putting your name forward.

There is always reluctance to stand for something in case you don't win or get elected, and I know that being a trustee isn't for everyone.  However if you have the skills (or recognise these skills in someone else), I would challenge you to stand despite the potential outcome, win or lose.  From the other side I can promise it's pretty concerning being on the Board and wondering if there will be enough people to have an election!  Don't worry about not knowing what to do; the School Trustees Association has plenty of resources and training to help you through; here is a short video on what it's all about (http://www.trustee-election.co.nz/).

If you'd like to know more please get in touch with any of the current Board members - http://www.beckenham.school.nz/index.php/people/board-of-trustees.

Congratulations

Roxy Murfin and Jimmy Middleditch have been selected to represent Canterbury in football. They will play in a tournament against 21 other South Island teams in October. It's a huge achievement for both these players who trialled against strong competition to be selected.

Training is three times a week for the next six weeks, so a big commitment to their sport.
Roxy Murfin placed third in the Canterbury Primary Schools fencing competition last weekend.

Staff Profile - Michelle Maule

Kia ora koutou. This will be my 22nd year teaching and almost all of it at Beckenham School! Yes I love being here! Every year is different and there have been many varied roles and opportunities at Beckenham that have enabled me to be challenged and continuously learning.  I am married to Simon, who is a mortgage broker, and we have a 13 year old son, Ruben, who has been at Beckenham for 8 years and has now just started Cashmere High School as a Year 9. My mother was a Solomon Islander and my father is from England so we have a rich cultural background. Simon, Ruben and I live in one of the most amazing places in the world, Governors Bay. At the end of the day, we love feeling like we are going on holiday when we drive over the hill. It is an incredibly peaceful place and we all love walking in the hills and playing basketball together. Recently my school focus has been on creating a culture of wellbeing, supporting our staff to develop strategies for increased wellbeing and explicitly teaching wellbeing practices to empower our children and to ensure learning is optimal. I have participated in Mindfulness training (Pause, Breathe, Smile) and support the wellbeing team at school. I am also about to embark on study in Positive Psychology/Education and Strengths Based Practice.

Rebekah Stoop

Kia ora Beckenham whanau. I grew up in the rural town of Balclutha, studied in Dunedin then started my teaching career in Kaitangata, another small rural town. I have thoroughly enjoyed my shift to Christchurch which I now call home. I love the diversity of this city where I can get out for nature walks (with my dog, Polly), go fishing, enjoy the beaches or embrace the real hustle and bustle of the great restaurants and retail therapy. I am very passionate about teaching, and focus on ensuring the children having a wonderful time at school, enjoy learning and working together as a team. I am so excited to be moving into our flash new learning environment, as I believe it will give the children even greater opportunities to learn and grow as a team. I am proud to be a part of this lovely change for Beckenham.

Expect Trains

KiwiRail ytains will be running both day and night on the rail line from the 15th September.

The rail line has been closed since the November earthquake and we need to make sure people have not become complacent around the railway.
Your local school or home may not be located next to the rail line but at some point you and your family or friends will no doubt use a rail crossing on their travels.

Our key safety messages are:

  • Always expect trains from either direction and at any time
  • If you are in a car, always slow down as you’re approaching a level crossing and be prepared to STOP
  • Look out for trains, and obey signs and signals
  • Stay off railway tracks. Only cross the railway at approved railway level crossing points.

Teacher Only Day - Monday 24th July. Term 3 will begin on Tuesday 25th July

We will start Term 3 with the opening of our second new building at 8:00am on Tuesday 25th July!

We will meet on Beckenham Park, near the new eastern building and have an opening ceremony. Following that, there will be an opportunity for everyone to look through the new building. The Champion St buses will still leave at the normal time of 8:40am.

During the final week of this term, our classes will be starting to deconstruct and pack. If you have an hour or two to spare in the next week, you may want to offer your help to one of our teachers, with removing art from the walls or packing a box. They will be able to identify if they have any jobs they would like help with.

During the first week of the holidays, the admin block will be emptied and all of the office and senior leadership team will be moving (for Term 3) to the Sandwich Road end of the western building. In the second week of the holidays, the Ferndale satellite class, and all our Year 3/4 Kowhai Team will be moved into the new eastern building. Our New Entrant classes will be moved into what has been Hub 8/9.

We are likely to be looking for a few parents (no children sorry) to assist with moving on Monday 17th July. We will send an email out to confirm this during the second week of the holidays.

This is a very exciting and busy time. Thank you all for your understanding and support.

Kind regards

Sharing our Learning

Kowhai Team

MAD time in Kowhai is Make A Difference time and a group of children have been making a difference by learning Italian.

We have been learning simple greetings and phrases, as well as the names for people, animals, clothing and colours. We have also been exploring Italy through the magic of Google Maps and Streetview.

On Tuesday two parents, Ravil and Amanda Atlas, who are both opera singers, visited to tell us about Italian opera, and what it was like living in Italy. Amanda sang Il Mio Babbina Caro, by Puccini. Then Ravil taught us to sing Funiculi, Funicula. Finally they sang a duet together.

We learnt about different opera voices, and what it is like to learn a new language. They also demonstrated some of the dance moves they use in opera to simulate dying! That was really fascinating.

On Friday another parent, Esther Vallero, who is from Torino in northern Italy, is coming in to help us make authentic Italian pizza. We are all so excited.

Thank you so much for sharing your unique knowledge with us. It has been a wonderful cultural experience. Now we are all so keen to visit Italy!
Grazie mille. Grazie per averci cantato.  Grazie per averci aiutato a imparare a fare la pizza.

WELLBEING DEFINITION AND NEXT STEPS

Why is wellbeing important, and why now?

The Christchurch Earthquakes have resulted in extra stress for many people, and this has generated interest in how each of us can manage, improve and protect our wellbeing during everyday life, as well as in times of high stress.  Higher levels of Mental Health (MH) and wellbeing are associated with:
  • Fewer symptoms of depression
  • Less procrastination and more self-control
  • Better academic engagement and results
  • Reduced risk of illness
  • Stronger social-emotional skills
  • Stronger community involvement
*Data from Lucy Hone Presentation to School Leaders Network (March 2017) & mind.org.uk

THEREFORE:
If we can help ourselves and our children to understand and develop strategies that increase wellbeing, we can help achieve the above...and better prepare everyone for times of stress. Of course, this means we need to create a shared understanding of what wellbeing is.

Our staff and wellbeing leaders have been drafting a definition for mental health and wellbeing, in child friendly language. To guide us, we have used:  Te Whare Tapa Wha, Martin Seligman's PERMA model, the NZ Curriculum and research from Lucy Hone (a Christchurch psychologist specialising in school and organisation wellbeing).

We would value your feedback...

We are pleased to share our draft definition with you and we would value your feedback. Please read the draft definition and click on the following link Wellbeing Google Form with your feedback on; the wording and anything else you would like us to consider in our definition before Thursday 6th July.

Beckenham’s DRAFT Wellbeing definition:
We have linked the definition to our school values. (We Care, We Get there Together, We Love Learning, We Love Challenge & We Make a Difference)
  • I think and talk about my feelings. I am starting to understand how my feelings affect my well being. (We Care, We Love Learning)
  • I can talk about what matters to me and why. (We Care, We Make a Difference)
  • I do the things I love, and try to get better at them. (We Love Learning, We Love a Challenge)
  • I can be a good friend and family member. I care for others. (We Care. We Get There Together)
  • I belong and contribute to various groups (this may include family, neighbourhood, team and school, sports teams, dance clubs, bands etc). (We Get There Together)
  • I have a ‘can do’ attitude in life and learning. I can bounce back from challenges. (We Love Learning, We Love a Challenge)
  • I keep myself well with food, movement and sleep. (We Care, We Make a Difference)
Many thanks, The Wellbeing Team

Staff Profiles

Last week we were thrilled to have a flying visit from Amanda McLean (currently on maternity leave) and her 4 1/2 month old son, Arthur. Amanda was teaching in our New Entrant team in Hub 10/11 last year and when she visited last week, she and Arthur were swamped by adoring children who were so pleased to see Amanda and wanted to get to know Arthur. It is their first visit to Christchurch since Arthur was born in February, as they have moved to Auckland for a year.

Beckenham School Newsletter 16th June 2017

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

I was so excited about sending out the building update yesterday that I forgot to send out the last fortnight's newsletter so here it is now...

Check out the latest building update if you haven't already read it here.

Teachers are busy writing reports at the moment with these due to go home on the last day of this term.

New House Shirts

We are very excited to announce that we are introducing a new House Shirt to our uniform range. The shirts will be available through the school office and will sell for $25 each.
The shirts are made of easy dry sports fabric and come in the new house colours of Yellow - Heathcote, Blue - Waimea, Purple - Fisher, and Orange - Tennyson. They will have the school logo on the front, and the House name on the back.
If you are not sure which house your child is in, please double check with Jack in the office at the time you purchase.

The School Council have been very involved in the development of this concept and they are looking forward to having the new house shirts being available for our students. It is the intention that these shirts are an optional uniform item, and that they can be worn for all House and Sports events (such as Thursday's Junior Cross Country) and that they can be worn once a week on Fridays for Celebration Assembly / Waiata day. We are expecting these into the office some time this week. It had been the plan to have them available for Junior Cross Country, but as they have not yet arrived, this may not be possible. We will put an email out as soon as they arrive and are available.

I look forward to sending you an email in the next week or so, inviting you to the Opening of the new east learning hub. Please keep an eye on your email

Sharing our Learning

Koru Team

Arts Interchange

This term, on Monday afternoons, the children in hubs 1-4 have been enjoying all of their teachers’ artistic talents. The children have been rotating, in their hubs, around the teachers and developing their skills in The Arts. Caitlyn has been leading Zumba for Kids, a fun dance and fitness combination. Amber has been leading mindfulness activities, focused on supporting the children to tune into their dial (read more about dial below). Charlotte has been leading percussion, using different instruments to create rhythms. Finally, Dorinda has been doing an excellent job at leading the Koru Choir. It has been a wonderful opportunity for the children to experience the very best of all their teachers and our different learning spaces.

Junior Cross Country

We are now well and truly into our training for the junior cross country coming up next week on Thursday 22nd June from 1:30pm. Trainings are being held out in the park which at this time of year can get very muddy. If your child has spare shoes please pack these in their bag to change into after their trainings. Race times for the event can be found below:
1:50pm - Year 0 / New Entrant (Hub 10 & 11)
2:00pm - Year 1 (Hubs 1, 2, 3 & 4)
2:10pm - Year 2 (Hubs 1, 2, 3 & 4)
2:20pm - Year 3 (Hubs 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9)
2:30pm - Year 4 (Hubs 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9)

Thank You, Parents!

A huge, gigantic, great, big thank you to all the parents who supported our hubs on our trips to the J Rock performance and the Art Gallery.

The children had a fantastic time, despite a little drizzle on some of the hubs’ trips. At the Art Gallery we were shown around a variety of incredible art works including some splendiferous and very different sculptures, oil and watercolor paintings.  We learnt about the artist's intentions and history of each piece of work from our very knowledgeable Art Gallery Educators. The children then had the opportunity to complete their own artwork.  Each child chose items from the Art gallery and their own lives that were special to them, and decorated a waka.

We also all loved our sortie into the Botanical Gardens.  We marvelled at the huge trees and gorgeous gardens, played on the playground, pretended we were leaf monsters and played in the cool climbing tree at the front entrance of the gardens.

Patterns and Art using Nature

Some art using the awesome autumn goodies from Mother Nature.

Stationery
Now that we are halfway through the second term a lot of children are beginning to near the end of some of their school books. If your child needs more books we will send a note letting you know what they need, so that you can pop into the office and get it, or purchase it through a local bookshop. This ensures that your child can continue with their learning uninterrupted. Thank you for your support.

Ready to Learn Behaviours

Koru has been working on how to tune in and be ready to learn.
First we Release which is taking a big deep breath then letting this out slowly.  We do this to help calm ourselves and prepare for learning.
Then we think about how we are feeling, where our internal  Dial is set. (Between a range of 1-10, 1 being pretty much asleep and 10 is full on, super active mode) We either need to calm down more or energise  ourselves until our dials are set to about 4-5, ready to learn.
The last step is Focus.  To feel what focus feels like, stand on one leg and pass a ball to a buddy. If you can do this without wobbling then your focus is spot on.
These are called our Self Regulation Tools and can be used throughout the day or any time we need to adjust how we are feeling. There are many experts in Koru who use their Self Regulation Tools regularly.
What great future focused learners we are becoming! We thank The Positive Participation Programme for developing and sharing these very useful tools.

Our Lovely New Learning Spaces

We are all looking forward to moving into our new learning spaces for the beginning of Term 3.  The children and staff will have opportunities to visit, explore and work in the spaces before the end of  this term so we are all ready to go in term 3.  We have all been watching the progress of the building work from the outside -  here are our latest shots from the inside.

Staff Profile - Paulette Newton

Kia ora koutou, I started my teaching career here at Beckenham and taught across the school from Years 1-6 for 9 years.  It was the only place I wanted to send my boy Ben (9) to when he started school and I have never looked back! I have been teaching here for the past five years and love the passion, creativity, knowledge and love for learning that each staff member brings to school each day. The opportunities that we provide our learners is amazing and for that reason I love Beckenham. I have a keen interest in the arts with a particular love for sewing, refurbishing old furniture.  I also dabble with a bit of painting from time to time. Prior to teaching I worked in hospitality where I was a restaurant manager and even trained as a chef. Sadly I didn't have the talents of Gordon Ramsay, however I love to cook and enjoy learning about different culinary styles. Being a people person, I love working with children and adults alike and enjoy being able to use my creative energy to make school a fun place to be. Spending time with friends and family is a top priority, and on the weekend I enjoy going to the park with Ben, heading to the beach or getting out and about for walks and nothing beats reading a good book!

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

I had the pleasure this week of joining Hub 1 on their Art Gallery and Botanic Gardens trip. The children were shown a small number of works at the gallery and engaged in a lot of discussion about those works before returning to the gallery classroom to create their own works. The small group I was with were shown a exhibit that included sculptures of sloths, made from recycled fur coats and gloves. They were quite fascinated with these creatures, and we had a go at making our bodies into the shapes of the sculptures. We took our volunteer guide slightly by surprise, but no sloth were hurt and a trip to the gallery was made just a little bit more memorable!

Preparing for New Learning Spaces

Our teachers are continuing to develop their practice and processes around collaboration as we work towards moving into our new learning spaces. Last week, the 5 teachers from the Y3/4 Kowai team spent a day together, visiting another school that has recently moved into learning spaces very similar to ours, spending time in our new building and then meeting to develop the systems and processes that will be important to have for the successful transition from our current spaces to our new spaces. They are considering the ways that our children learn, and ensuring that there will be consistency from all the members of the teaching team in the expectations and messages that are given to the children.

The West Hub continues to progress with lighting, plumbing, wall and floor coverings and joinery nearly all in. The underfloor heating system is being commissioned this coming week.
Our Year 1/2 teachers from Hub 10/11 had a similar day on Thursday, and the Koru teachers from Hubs 1-4 will have a similar day coming in the next couple of weeks. We appreciate that having a reliever in the class for day is not quite the same as having the teacher with whom the children are familiar, and we believe that giving the teachers sufficient time for this preparation is very important and will result in the best outcomes as we move forward.

Sharing our Learning

Pohutukawa Team Highlights

Identity
Our conceptual learning is focused around understanding that identity highlights the uniqueness and similarities within living things, communities, structures and places. This term, we have developed this understanding further through Science, Visual Art and Health.
As we started our journey last term into the concept of identity, an interest sparked around DNA when we were learning about our whakapapa. This term, we are delving deeper into that through crime scene investigations, individual traits, inheritance and genes. Here are some examples of drawing a dog, created from a unique DNA code:

We are learning about visually communicating our ideas in relation to our identity. This area has been explored through Picasso style cubism portraits. Here are some examples of our ideas:

During Term 1 we developed our understanding around how people’s feelings, beliefs and actions contribute to our own and others’ sense of self-worth. This term, we are building on this concept through focusing on ways to act responsibility to support ourselves and others in negative situations, particularly bullying. We are exploring this through identifying types of bullying, the impacts it might have and what we can do to stop it. Here is one of our groups practising their role play based on a bullying scenario:

Writing
We have been working on making changes to our writing to make it more interesting for the reader. These changes have focused around varying sentence lengths and adding detail such as alliterative adjectives. Here is an example that James has written based on a writing motivation around discovering a dinosaur. We added detail to it collaboratively as a writing group.

Velociraptor

I opened a rattling door and stumbled across the box lying at my feet containing a heavy pistol and some tiny tranquilising darts.
Then I heard a rattling noise. Thud thud! I looked up into the glaring eyes of a 5 foot tall scaly velociraptor! It hissed and snarled at me but fortunately it was in a cage. Then I did what most people would do, I picked up the pistol and pulled the trigger. The dart flew through the air. Whoosh! It hit the velociraptor. It fell to the ground. At night the raptor’s eyes opened wide and its teeth opened. Click! The raptor ran down the street. I woke up then I charged after it. The raptor sprang into the air like a kid on a pogo stick and chomped a man on the leg. He collapsed to the ground dramatically dead. Then I remembered the darts! I pulled the trigger and the dart struck. Once again the raptor fell to the ground. Later, the animal control squad came along. Phew!

Children's Safety

You may have been aware of two items in the news over the past week around children's safety. The first was regarding an attempted abduction of a child near Parklands School. The second was an item on Stuff and on the Neighbourhood Facebook page regarding a letter sent to parents at Somerfield and St Peters Schools from the Department of Corrections, to advise that a known sex offender was being released into the area.
As a school we have not been notified by Corrections because our school was not considered to be in the notifiable area.
We appreciate that news like this causes alarm and concern for parents. The unfortunate reality is that there are potentially always people living and moving around our community who may wish to harm children and what these two news items have done is remind us of that.
The best protection parents can give their children is to talk with them about personal safety, and in particular about how to act and respond to potential threats when they are out in the local community without an adult.
NZ Police have some tips about Keeping Children Safe, as does the website Kiwi Families and we encourage you to regularly discuss your family's plan and expectations around what you want your children to do to help to keep them safe.

Scholastic Book Orders:

Unfortunately due to an error on the website orders for the latest Scholastic book issue, some of the ordered books will be delivered to school.  This is not our preferred option and has previously been removed from the website by Scholastic.  It will NOT be available on any future issues.  The only option is to have the books delivered to an alternative address, e.g. your home address.
In an effort to reduce the amount of mail going through the office and the amount of wasted paper we will no longer distribute the paper flyer for each Scholastic book issue during the year.  Instead there will be a link in the newsletter to inform you that the next issue has opened and you can now order online.  Obviously you are able to visit the scholastic website at any time and order books, we will merely be placing a courtesy reminder when they have a new issue of books.
For those of you who have ordered books in the latest issue, and ticked the deliver to school option, you will receive an email when the books have arrived.

Congratulations to...

Juliette Gray who, back in April, competed in the Alana Haines Australasian Awards (for Ballet),  held every 2 years and biggest comp in Australasia held in Wellington. 163 juniors competed and Juliette was one of the 11 finalists and received the Audience Choice Award and the Auckland week scholarship - a week’s scholarship (including flights) to the Auckland Ballet Academy. There was only one other South Island competitor in the final 11 and the top three places all went to Australian students who are full-time at ballet schools. Congratulations Juliette - you are a dedicated dancer and your persistence and determination have paid off.

Kia ora koutou.  I feel very lucky to have joined the wonderful team at Beckenham School this year. Prior to 2017 I taught in Oakura, Auckland, Milton, Christchurch and the UK.  I have also enjoyed lecturing at the University of Auckland, working with parents to help them support their children at home and as a specialist teacher in the Secondary Sector.  I love teaching in all areas of the school and am thoroughly enjoying being  in the Junior School working with the very talented, energetic teachers in Koru team.  I have two gorgeous children Maisy (13) and Angus (11).  Maisy is at Cashmere HIgh School, enjoying making new friends, surfing and playing soccer.  Angus is in Year 6 at Beckenham School and loves surfing, kayaking and soccer. Our days are spent involved in many different active past times!  Lots of fun.  As a family we love spending time with Grandma Honey and Grandad Bruce in Sumner and exploring new outdoor activities around Canterbury with friends and family.  A big thank you to everyone in the Beckenham community for helping me to feel so welcome this year.
