Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto Newsletter 3 August 2018

Principal's Patch

Kia ora whānau

Thank you to the people who replied to our last newsletter offering help with our special lunchtime programmes.  We appreciate all your support.

This term we have started utilising our exciting, new Treemendous area.

The children are able to utilise the area in class time with their teacher or an adult, and on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at break times when we have duty teachers monitoring the area.

It has been exciting watching our Treemendous wardens take care of the area and the children who play there, offering information about the plants and how we can play in this wonderful area.  The large “nests” have become pirate ships, balance beams in a circus, a dance arena and a place for fairies to rest.

The area is also rich with intriguing creatures which the children can observe and discuss.

Kindest regards

Sue Leadbetter
Acting Principal

Kia ora whānau

I’m writing this from Adelaide where I’m currently shadowing the principal of Lockleys North Primary School. I am feeling very privileged to have this opportunity to meet so many dedicated Australian educators, teachers, support staff and principals, who have all been welcoming, generous with their time and keen to share with me their practice and passion for teaching and learning. It's exciting to see so many similarities between our schools, the beliefs that we share about how children learn, and what authentic, 21st Century teaching and learning needs to look like to successfully equip our learners for the future.

What has surprised me is the difference in the resourcing that schools here get, compared to what we are expected to work with in New Zealand. All teachers here get an hour of classroom release for planning EVERY DAY and they get additional release each term to carry out assessment tasks. Like our teachers, they still take their work home to finish in the evenings and weekends. Children who are English as second language learners are put into classes with a ratio of one teacher to 15 children, that are dedicated to teaching them English for the first three years of their schooling, regardless of their starting year level, before they are transitioned to their local school into a mainstream class. Schools here have dedicated learning support teachers who are able to work individually and with groups of children with diverse learning needs. Students with high behaviour and/or learning needs have access to significantly more teacher aide and specialist teacher support. Teachers are expected to go to training workshops that are run and funded by their Department of Education, during school hours (as opposed to after school or in the holidays). After 10 years, a teacher is entitled to take nearly 10 weeks of long-service leave, and the pay scales here for teachers are at least 30% higher than ours in NZ.

In voting to go on strike on August 15th, our primary teaching profession is asking to be properly resourced and funded to do the work that they are expected to do. This is not simply about pay - it is about the quality of education that we want to be able to provide for our children.

The OECD has warned that our teachers are paid ten percent less than other New Zealanders with similar levels of skills and experience, and we're paid much less than many of our peers overseas. NZ teachers have got some of the highest workloads, biggest classes, and lowest pay of any teachers in the developed world (OECD Education at a Glance, 2017).

In New Zealand we have a serious crisis occurring. We have young teachers leaving the profession in droves and a large percentage of our aging profession heading towards retirement. We have fewer numbers entering teacher training and many of those who graduate are not staying in the profession beyond their first two to four years. In parts of New Zealand, schools cannot get experienced, quality teachers when they advertise positions. Even in Christchurch, where a teaching advertisement 10 years ago would have typically attracted over 50 quality, experienced applicants, we would now be lucky now to get five.

Our students with diverse and complex learning needs are not getting the in-class support and access to expert professionals (resource teachers of literacy, psychologists, behaviour therapists, speech language therapists, etc.) that they need and deserve. Teacher aide funding to schools has always been insufficient and has been continuously eroded over the years.

The wellbeing of our profession has been being eroded and undermined for years and we cannot sustain this any longer. The ones who ultimately suffer are our children who are expected to thrive in  a system that is not being resourced to meet their diverse and complex needs. By taking industrial action, we are asking for more resourcing for our education system:

  • by resourcing schools to support diverse learners through more targetted funding for learning support staffing (teachers and teacher aides),
  • by paying teachers more to attract and retain brilliant teachers, and
  • by giving teachers better release time to manage their workloads and to have time for professional development, planning and assessment.

You can read more about the campaign here, on the NZEI website.

Primary teachers in New Zealand have not taken the decision to strike lightly - this hasn’t happened in New Zealand since the 1990s. Please show your support for our teachers in whatever way you can.

It’s Time. Time to lead, teach and learn. Kua tai - Te wā!

Learning Conference feedback

Last year we requested caregiver feedback on our learning conference process and used that to feed into our evaluations of the process. This resulted in us modifying the way that we ran the conferences this week. We would again appreciate your feedback to assist us with our ongoing evaluation and to help us to continuously improve.

Winter Tournament

The weather really turned it on for our Zone Winter Tournament at Hagley Park yesterday. The children competed in a series of fast and furious games against teams from other schools in our zone. Three seemed to be the number of the day with many of our teams earning third place in the tournament, narrowly missing the chance to compete at Canterbury level. After the tournament I received a number of emails from parents, commenting on the fantastic sportsmanship demonstrated by our tamariki, which is fantastic to hear. A mammoth thank you to all the parents who managed a team for the morning. The children loved this experience.

Primary and Intermediate Ski Race

This annual event is held at Mount Cheeseman and is a fantastic opportunity for tamariki with a passion for skiing to represent their school in this sport. Following the success of last year’s event, we would like to put forward a team again this year and are now accepting entries on a first come first served basis. Children must be competent skiers. The event takes place on Sunday the 19th of August and costs $40 per child, payable to the school. Please, email Jenny if you are interested in entering.

Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto Newsletter 26 July 2018

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

Welcome back to a new term.  The promise of longer days, hopefully more sunshine and the sight of daffodils appearing in the garden always raises the spirits.  We are looking forward to catching up with many of you at the learning conferences next week.  As always, if you have any questions or things you would like to share with your child’s teacher, during the year, please make a time to meet with them before or after school  to have a chat.
Independence and the ability to manage our time are lifelong skills that we look to begin to develop in our children from an early age.  As caregivers, we are instrumental in coaching our children to manage increasing responsibility and sometimes, in our busy lives, this is a challenge.
How many things do we do for our children that they could do themselves?
Are we setting our children up for independence and success?
Habitually doing things for our children, that they are capable of doing themselves, can send an inadvertent message that we don’t have confidence in their abilities.  The outcome is a child who lacks independence, self-esteem and problem-solving skills and who can’t—or won’t—do age-appropriate tasks. This is sometimes called “learned helplessness.”
As caregivers we want the best for our children and often, we are just trying to keep all those balls in the air. There’s a huge payoff for encouraging our children’s independence: confident, capable kids, and some tasks removed from our plates.
We would like to encourage you, as caregivers, to choose at least one of the tasks below to encourage independence in your child(ren).  Ask them to ...
  • Organise their own breakfast each day, older child can organise an evening meal each week
  • Carry their own bag to the classroom and do their morning jobs.
  • Pack their school bag the night before so it is ready in the morning.
  • Remember to take all they will need for the day. (An idea here is to make a list of what is needed for school each day, so the child can check they have everything needed for the day ahead.)
  • Make their own lunch or part of their lunch each day.
  • Do specific jobs around the house - “Here is a list of jobs you could do to help around the house - how many do you think you are old / capable enough of doing?”
At school, if a child forgets some special piece of equipment for their day, staff will try to help in any way they can.  If this is not possible e.g. forgotten swimming togs, forgotten specialist sports gear, we will refrain from phoning home to ask parents to come to school (unless it is an emergency).  Hopefully that will help our children to remember for next time.

Acting Deputy Principal.

Thank you in advance.

Keeping ourselves safe
We are aware that one of our children thought she was being followed by a car yesterday afternoon after school.  The child involved did all the right things, not stopping, heading straight home, keeping calm and telling her parents when she got home.
Whilst we always encourage our children to walk home with others, sometimes this is not possible.  As parents we can equip our children to deal with situations that may arise, that make them feel unsure.  It is a good time to sit down and have a chat with them about a safety plan that will help them if this situation occurs.  There may be a friends house along the way home that could be a safe house they can go to if they need and returning to school is also an option.  The police have been informed.

The Drop Off Zone

Thank you to everyone who is using the drop off zone outside the admin block on Sandwich Road the way it is intended.  We have noticed that mornings are working particularly well.  In the afternoons please ask your child to meet you on the footpath, beside the zone, or, park elsewhere on the streets around the school so you can leave your car and walk to meet your child.  No parked cars in the drop off zone please.
The car park on school grounds accessed off Sandwich Road, in behind the New Entrant hub is for staff and service vehicles.  Thank you for remembering this, and for not using the area as a drive through drop off zone.

Soup Soup Soup

Remember to bring your bowl or cup for soup on Monday and Tuesday next week when Kauri Hub students will be selling tomato soup and a cheese roll for lunch. $3 will buy a cup of soup and one cheese roll, or two cheese rolls. Koru and Kowhai's day is Monday and Pohutukawa and Kauri are on Tuesday.

Children purchase their tickets by the flagpole before school.
To give us an idea of quantities to prepare, please fill in this very quick form.

Many thanks for supporting Kauri fundraising.

Allergy information

Across our school we have a number of children with different food allergies.
To support the wellbeing of these students we have the following guidelines in place which we ask you to follow:
For 2018, there are to be no peanuts in the Kauri (Year 7/8) or Kowhai (Year 3/4) teams please, due to the extreme anaphylaxis risk for one of our students who learns in Parenga.
Whenever children bring food to school for shared kai occasions, please follow the guidelines provided by the teachers for that event.
We will inform you during the year if specific guidelines for your child’s hub change.  Our full allergy policy and guidelines in this booklet, are also available on the Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto website under “Information - Policies - SchoolDocs” then search ‘allergy’, or alternatively use this link to go directly to the allergy page: https://bit.ly/2LCfQ3N  .  If you have any questions or concerns, please discuss them in the first instance with your child’s point of contact teacher.

Sleep inquiry

Last term, a school-wide focus was on sleep, with the students learning the benefits of  sleep and finding ways to improve their own sleep. Research has shown that as little as 10 minutes of lost sleep a night can lead to symptoms similar to ADHD. The purpose of the inquiry, which was run in partnership with the University of Canterbury, was to equip the children with the knowledge and skills required to make positive changes to their own sleep.

Initially the students learnt about the benefits of sleep and positive sleep hygiene. Then they were given the opportunity to monitor both the duration and quality of their sleep. Once the children had gathered that data they chose a goal to focus on. These goals ranged from establishing a set routine for bedtime, to ensuring their room temperature was comfortable, to not watching any screens before bedtime. Once a week these goals were assessed, and if they had been achieved, new goals were set. The overall process was very empowering for the children, as they felt equipped to make a difference to either the quality or duration of their sleep, They also understood the importance of having a good sleep, providing the motivation needed to make a difference.

When reflecting upon the programme, it was fabulous to hear from the children and some of their parents about the success the children had experienced with changing their sleeping habits.
‘I used to have trouble sleeping at night, but now I have been having a much better sleep.’
‘It was a really good idea focusing on improving your sleep because you get more sleep and it is good for your health.’
‘I now have a good sleep routine so I get to sleep quicker.’
‘It was a good idea to learn what stops you from having a good night’s sleep so that you can change some things.’
‘It’s really good to focus on things that you can improve on.’
‘The sleep inquiry provided rich learning for my daughter. She enjoyed researching and sharing interesting facts with us. She developed a good awareness of the importance of a healthy sleep routine and how it impacts on wellbeing.’
‘Before the sleep programme my child would try to stay up as long as he could each night and then, in the middle of the night, come through and crawl into bed with me.  A dreadful sleep for us both.  As the sleep programme has progressed he has asked for darker curtains in his bedroom so he can sleep more soundly, he takes himself off to bed at the same time each night so he is getting what he now knows is enough sleep and he stays in his own bed all night.  Thank you very much for this amazing programme it has really made the world of difference to our whole family.’
‘I was so impressed with the latest sleep study learning in Pōhutukawa. Not only did my son learn about the importance of sleep and the benefits for the body, but he also started to manage his sleep more effectively. I was impressed with his motivation to meet his sleep goals each night and this saw him putting himself to bed earlier to ensure he got the required sleep hours. As a family, we now talk about sleep and we have all started to make small changes to ensure that we all get a good rest each night.’

New uniform supplier for Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto

Kia ora koutou

As indicated at the end of last term we are happy to announce a new uniform supplier for Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto.  This is effective immediately.

Thanks to everyone who completed the recent ‘Uniform Survey’.
The responses were reviewed & consequently a new supplier was sought.
We are pleased to announce that Mainland Uniforms will be the NEW supplier of the Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto uniform.

Mainland Uniforms are a local company that have been supplying Christchurch schools uniform for over 100 years. They have recently opened a city store, conveniently located at 189 Peterborough St (next to Knitwear) with ample off-street parking.
Opening hours are as follows: Monday - Friday 9am-5pm & Sat 10am-1pm.

Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto uniform will be stocked at this store & available for purchasing from the beginning of Term Three.
Generic items of the uniform (plain red polos, plain black track pants, culottes & shorts) can still be sourced from other stores but Mainland Uniform will be the only supplier of our logo items (red polar fleece zipped jacket, red polycotton sweatshirt & the senior jacket)
They can also supply these generic items & are at comparable prices to the previous supplier, conveniently providing a one stop shop.

Mainland Uniforms also offer an online service for those unable to make it to the shop. A direct link can be found on the school website OR via http://www.mainlanduniforms.co.nz/ -click on Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto link & the relevant uniform menu will drop down for selection.
The uniform will remain the same and logoed items will display the NEW school logo. Your current uniform stock can be continued to be worn even if it displays the “old” logo.
Responses from the survey also indicated a “natural fibre” item would be appreciated.
Mainland Uniform will be supplying a thick red plain merino top, to be worn as a jersey.
A plain black skort has also been added to the uniform list along with double-kneed plain black fleece track pants.

Layby will be a service that can NOW be offered over the whole year. A 10% deposit will be required & direct debit can be set up. From September, every year, Mainland Uniforms also offer a 10% discount on layby items in preparation for the new school year. On completion of the layby, if the child has outgrown the item it can be easily swapped for the correct size.
Mainland Uniforms have assured the school that stock levels will be kept high & if there isn’t a particular size, it will be sourced & available within 1-2 weeks (including logo items).

We are very excited to be working with Mainland Uniforms & encourage you to visit the City Store or check out their online store.

Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto Newsletter 6th July

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

...and another term comes to an end! I'm not sure that the weeks fly by for the children as fast as they seem to for all of the adults at school, but this term really has felt like a full and fast one!

This is a short newsletter this week, just to put some final end of term notices in, and to wish you all a safe and restful break.

You should have received your child's report today. They were handed out to children in the afternoon. If you have not received a report, please email Jacky in the office, and she will chase that up for you at the start of the new term. Some children have brought home a second copy for parents who live separately, and others have had a second copy emailed or posted out by Jacky today, according to the instructions we have on our system. If you need to update your family information, contact details or your child's health details at any stage, please do so by contacting Jacky in the office - preferably in writing/email, so that she can update this.

There will be an email coming out during the holidays about booking Learning Conferences for Week 2 of next term. The dates are on the calendar info below.

A huge thank you to the PTA who organised and ran three fabulous Discos, back to back, last Friday. What a lot of fun was had by our children!

As I mentioned in an earlier newsletter, I have been fortunate to have been awarded a Ministry of Education scholarship to travel to Adelaide for the first four weeks of Term 3 to shadow a principal there. I am very grateful for the opportunity and will be there with another Canterbury principal, Jo Earl, from St Francis of Assisi School in Mairehau. We will return in Week 5 of next term, and the two principals who we have been shadowing then come to Christchurch to shadow us for the last four weeks of Term 3. A great opportunity to understand how other schools and leaders operate and to learn from one another.

During my absence, Sue Leadbetter will be Acting Principal and Nicky Dunlop and Paulette Newton will be sharing the Deputy Principal role supporting Sue.

A highlight of the last day of term for me today, was participating in the staff vs students volleyball match in the hall at lunchtime! I never did find out who actually won, but we all, including the 100 or so spectators, had a huge amount of fun!

Best wishes to you all for the holidays

Congratulations to...

Sir Peter Blake Award winners...

This year we could not separate two young leaders. Both are strongly admired and respected by their peers. Over the past two years, one has consistently displayed outstanding leadership skills, while the other has evolved into an outstanding leader.

Tilly

From your first day in the Kauri Whānau, you shone as a natural and capable leader. Your peers respect your calm, proactive and reliable attitude.  You are naturally reflective, displaying empathy towards others and offering kind, genuine encouragement to all. You are community minded, able to identify the bigger picture and put others’ needs ahead of your own. You lead with a quiet confidence: your peers recognise you as approachable, patient and supportive. You excel in the face of challenge, readily stepping out of your comfort zone and encouraging others to do the same.

Thom

Kauri Whānau has watched you evolve into a very confident, self-assured and enthusiastic leader over the past 18 months. Your charismatic personality makes others feel welcomed, safe and willing to take risks. You are non-judgmental in the way that you accept others and make every person in a group feel valued. You walk beside those who you lead, regularly stepping outside your comfort zone and in the process encouraging others to do so too. Your peers recognise the 150% that you consistently give and the perseverance with which you approach all that you do.

Virtuoso Strings Orchestra

Transforming lives through music.
Months of hard work and practise will come to fruition for members of the Virtuoso Strings Orchestra (VSO), who are touring the South Island in July.
Forty-two talented school students will entertain audiences with a fun mix of classical, popular and traditional tunes, in what is the highlight of the year for the young musicians.
The students, ranging in age from 8 years to 17 years, form a tightly knit group who practise incredibly hard together to perfect their ensemble skills, VSO Co-founder Dr Elizabeth (Liz) Sneyd says.
“Their love of music is infectious and their performances shatter every stereotype of classical music that is out there.”
In 2012, Liz along with Craig Utting formed VSO and today the popular youth orchestra is based in Cannons Creek, Porirua, and run by the Virtuoso Strings Charitable Trust.
The VSO South Island Tour kicks off on July 13 in Christchurch, and wraps up in
Mosgiel on July 19. All concerts are free and all are welcome.

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

Well - the Big Day is finally here and the sun is shining too, which is a real bonus.
Today, we have been hosting Ruud Kleinpaste (The Bug Man) and Riley Elliot (The Shark Man) at school and tomorrow, is the TREEMENDOUS MAKEOVER day!

Check out the video below, taken earlier this week, of Andy Lyons from Heathcote Valley Gallery, an uncle of some of our students, carving this huge log from our school oak tree, into a very special chair.

All of the CCC sports grounds are closed this weekend, so take the opportunity to come along to the Treemendous Makeover and help to make this area a beautiful place for our children to play!

Staffing Update for Term 3 & 4

As you know, Michelle Maule, our Deputy Principal, is currently on secondment to the Ministry of Education, working in the Special Education Team. This secondment was originally expected to be for two terms, however, the Ministry have asked Michelle to stay on until the end of the year. We are very proud of Michelle for the experience that she is able to offer at the Ministry to support other schools, and know that she will be expanding her expertise to bring back to Beckenham as well.

Sue Leadbetter, who is currently doing an amazing job of being Deputy Principal in Michelle's absence, will now continue on doing this until the end of the year.

That leaves a vacancy for a teacher to take the next New Entrant class that is due to begin in Term 3 and we are delighted to be welcoming Jo Smith back as a full time member of our staff for Terms 3 and 4 to take this position.

I have been very fortunate to have been awarded a Ministry of Education Principal Job Shadow scholarship to travel to Adelaide for the first four weeks of next term. I will be going to a school in the west of Adelaide called Lockleys North School and working with their principal, Tyson Grinham. Tyson has been the successful Australian recipient of the matching scholarship, and he will then come to Christchurch and visit Beckenham for 3 weeks in the latter half of Term 3. This is a very exciting opportunity and I am very grateful to the Board for the support that they have given in supporting me with this.
Ngā mihi

School Notices

Tuesday 26 June 2018 - no afternoon classes

This is the date that NZEI have confirmed that there will be a paid union meeting at Horncastle Arena from 2pm, for all primary teachers in Christchurch. Because we don't have a range of dates available to send our staff to, we do need to ask you to collect your children from school this day at 12:40pm.

If you are not able to organise any alternatives for this afternoon, please contact Jacky in the office as soon as possible and we will arrange for supervision of that small group of students.

Pyjamas and Breakfast on the Shortest Day

Next Thursday (21st June), the Student Council will be holding a Pyjama Day to ring in the shortest day of the year. Students are invited to wear their pyjamas to school and eat a hot porridge breakfast, kindly provided by the PTA. The breakfast will be served in the hall from 8:00-9:00 am. In order to minimise waste, we are asking that students bring their own named bowl; these will be rinsed and returned to the students before the end of the day. Spoons will be provided. In return for breakfast and/or mufti, we are asking students to bring a can of food to donate to the Christchurch Methodist Mission, so that those in need can have a hot dinner.

Electronic Music Afterschool Programme:

PYDT are looking for young people to be part of a fresh, exciting Electronic Music Production programme at the Te Koru Youth Centre. If you're interested in learning how to make your own Music on computers in a fun, social environment at a cool Youth Centre, this is the place for you! If You would like more information about this programme, please email studio@pydt.org, or give Tom a call on 0210503237.

While we have a big focus on Music and Technology here at PYDT, our main focus is professional, holistic youth work. We put a lot of emphasis into our programmes and run them to the highest standard, but they are always seen as simply a point of leverage for us to connect with and support the young people who come through our programmes. We have already had an amazing response from the parents who currently send their young people along, so much so that we have had parents tell us that they are astounded by the change in behaviour their young person has had while at home. Parents have also expressed their excitement that their young person is surrounding themselves with people who have their best interests at heart, rather than loitering around local businesses and causing problems.

This musical endeavour is just one of the many programmes we run here at the centre, including our widely endorsed Leadership Training Course for schools, Holiday Programmes, after-school Youth Hangout spaces, Disability Youth Groups and so many others!

Get ready for flu season – protect your whānau and community

Colder weather also brings along a nasty passenger – the flu.
As you may have seen in the media, it’s been a terrible flu season in the Northern Hemisphere, which
is a possible predictor for what we may see here.
Families in the Hurunui and Kaikōura districts can once again ensure their children have the best
protection available against the flu this winter – and it won't cost a cent! Young people from six
months to 17 years of age living in the Kaikōura and Hurunui areas (within the Canterbury District
Health Board) can receive free flu shots.
Influenza infection rates are generally highest in children and healthy children are the major cause of
the spread of the virus in the community. Around 80 percent of people infected show no or minimal
symptoms so you can spread the flu bug without knowing you have it – and the elderly, pregnant
women and people with chronic health conditions are particularly vulnerable.
Canterbury District Health Board is urging you to protect your whānau and the wider community by
getting your flu shot as soon as possible. This year’s vaccines have been specially formulated for New
Zealand and are expected to offer protection against the strain that was circulating in the Northern
Hemisphere.
While flu shots are free for under 18s, they’re available for anyone for a fee from a doctor, nurse or
some pharmacists. You or your whānau may qualify for a free shot as well- check out www.flufree.co.nz for more info and flu facts.
