Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

Welcome back to Term 4! There is no doubt that Term 4 always seems to fly by faster than any other term, and that there is always a lot happening in the school at this time of the year.

We had a fabulous turnout at our Welcome Assembly on Friday, with a record number of new whānau present for our termly welcome to new families and children.

On Wednesday this week we welcomed Year 7/8 students from Carisbrook School in Dunedin to compete with our students in our annual inter-school sports challenge. We were extremely fortnuate with the weather, and this year, we managed to win the trophy back! Congratulations to everyone who participated and showed such great sportsmanship and manaakitanga to our visitors.

Enrolling your four year old...

If you have a four-year-old who you are intending to enrol at Beckenham, we would really appreciate you getting your enrolment form in as soon as possible. You can download an enrolment form from the school website and email it in to Jacky in the office. This helps us with our planning for next year, and helps us with providing evidence to the Ministry of Education that we need more staffing than they have so far allocated to us for 2020.

House Activities in Term 4

In Term Four, on alternate Fridays, we have House Games instead of Waiata. These games provide an opportunity for children to mix with other children of different year levels and ages from across the school and provides leadership opportunities for our senior students.
Children can wear their 'House Shirts' every Friday- if you haven't purchased one yet, these are available from the school office.

Parent Seminar on Digital Safety

We are very pleased to be able to announce that Mana Ake will be offering the following important Parent Seminar in November - please put this in your diaries now.

Supporting Your Child in a Digital World' -Parent seminar
The digital world is here to stay.
Come along and find out how to keep your children safe in the digital world. Learn how the digital world can affect children's well-being and how to support them in this environment.

Our next Whānau Rōpū Hui - whānau picnic and chance to learn a new game together!

Save the date of our next whānau rōpū hui in your diary - Friday 8th November from 5:00pm. We will have the opportunity to learn a game called "Ki o Rahi" which is a Māori ball game, described in Wikipaedia below:
"Kī-o-rahi is a ball sport played in New Zealand with a small round ball called a 'kī'. It is a fast-paced game incorporating skills similar to rugby union, netball, and touch.[1] Two teams of seven players play on a circular field divided into zones, and score points by touching the 'pou' (boundary markers) and hitting a central 'tupu' or target. The game is played with varying rules (e.g. number of people, size of field, tag ripping rules etc.) depending on the geographic area it is played in. A process called Tatu, before the game, determines which rules the two teams will use."

The evening will be a chance for families to learn the game together, and to play in mixed teams. It should be a lot of fun!

Citizen of the Week

Samantha Maule - Year 8

Sam, you are a thoughtful and empathetic member of Kauri whānau. You consistently show initiative, identifying what needs to be done and seeing the task through to completion. Your learning is always completed to the best of your ability and you will often go the extra distance to make sure tasks are completed on time. Keep up the fantastic work!

School Notices

Please do not send food to school to be shared

Please do not bring food into school to be shared with other children. (The only exception to this would be fresh fruit). Whilst we understand that there are times you want to celebrate special events for your children with their friends at school, e.g. birthdays or being awarded prizes, by bringing food and treats for them to share, we have a policy of children only eating the food that their whānau have prepared and sent with them.  We have a number of students with food allergies and also need to respect the wishes of some families who want to monitor what their children are eating and prefer their children just to eat food they have prepared. From time to time, there may be an event that teachers have organised that will involve food (cultural or learning activities) and they will have advised families in advance that this will be happening.

Sunhats

Looking at the weather last week you might wonder if the sun will shine again, but I'm sure sunny days are not that far away.  During term 4 it is compulsory for all students to wear a hat.  These are available for purchase from the school office, the PTA second hand uniform shop and from Mainland Uniforms at 189 Peterborough Street.  Caps are not an acceptable form of sun protection for wearing at school.  Please name your child's hat on the inside with their own name (particularly important if they have a hand-me-down hat from someone else).

Parking outside the School

The 3 minute drop off zone has generally been working well since its instigation.  Please remember that it is a 3 minute drop off zone, and is designed so that students are dropped off. Please do not park here if you intend walking your students into class.

When dropping off or picking up your child from school, please also ensure you stay off the painted yellow lines. These are there to ensure drivers and our road patrollers have a clear view of the road. There is a lot of parking on Eastern Tce and on Norwood Street if the drop off zone is busy or alternatively, you might need to make a circle of the block.  Please respect the purpose of these lines especially on wet days to maintain the safety of all our children and their whānau.

Lost Property

We have a collection of drink bottles (Metal and plastic), beautiful knitted hats, a variety of socks and mittens and unnamed bottoms and tops, along with many un-named uniform items etc. The lost property is on display on the library veranda throughout the day.

Jewellery at school

One piece of jewellery/taonga of cultural significance may be worn under clothing. This may be displayed on formal school occasions.
Plain ear studs can be worn.
Sleepers or dangly earrings are not appropriate for school as they can catch and tear.

Congratulations to...

Zone Speech Finalists.  Every year, two intermediate students are selected to represent our kura in the Zone Speech Competition, run by the Rotary Club. This is a fantastic experience that extends and challenges our tamariki.

In the year 7 competition, Henry Hood was placed third place with a witty and informative speech on food waste. The judges were impressed by the amount of research that Henry used to back up his ideas on this important and global topic.

In the year 8 competition, Maddi McIvor was awarded first place. Her powerfully persuasive speech tackled the issue of gender inequality in sport. The judges commended Maddi on her advanced vocabulary and the way that she structured her ideas.

A huge congratulations to both of these children.

Results from our school competition are as follows:

Year 7
1st Henry Hood
2nd Thomas Lyall
3rd Ruby McNiven

Year 8
1st Maddi McIvor
2nd Ben Evans
3rd equal Meg Macdonald and Morvern McDaid

Congratulations also to Meara who competed at the Canterbury Classic Karate Competition and won a gold medal in her age group for Kumite (combat). A lot of hard training went into the preparation for this competition so it was well deserved.

Congratulations to Charlotte who gained 3 firsts in a recent ballet competition.  She was also the ballet champion for 'Under 15-year-olds'.

and... Congratulations to Lucy who spoke at the TedXYouth in September, here in Christchurch. You can see Lucy's talk here...

Sports News

Athletic Sports

This year, we are excited to announce that we will be holding our athletics celebration as a whole school event. This will take place on Monday the 4th of November. Years 5 to 8 will be out on Beckenham Park competing in field and track rotations all day. Years 0 - 4 will start the day with their usual school routine and join us on the park for their run, jump, throw rotations from 11:50 am.
Athletics learning is a key part of our PE curriculum across all teams. The children are being taught safe and effective techniques as well as perseverance, resilience, and sportsmanship. Our whole school athletics day is a celebration of this learning.

This year, all children will compete alongside each other rather than in boy/girl events. This is one way that we are seeking to make the event inclusive to all. Sport Canterbury does have gender-based divisions for zone level competition and we will still be able to identify qualifying athletes from Years 5 - 8 to represent our kura at this event. To achieve this we will run our sprint finals for Years 5 - 8 by gender. Like previous years, we will be identifying a top girl and boy athlete from each year level from 5 - 8 who will be recognised at a Celebration Assembly following the event.

Our athletics day concludes with sprint finals, starting at 2:00. Our whole school will come together to cheer on the runners. The final event is a House Relay, which doubles up as an adults versus children race. With years 0 - 8 participating in this relay, we are going to need your support to make up an adult team. Bring your running shoes!

Long jump for years 5 - 8 will be held at Hillview Christian School, on a separate date, yet to be confirmed.

More detailed information about the day’s programme will be communicated to you before the event.

Sport Uniforms - Please Return

We are missing several Sport Uniform tops. Please hunt in bags, under beds etc for any that are  hiding and return items back to school. This clothing is expensive and it is preferable to have them returned rather than charge for replacing them.

Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award

...Every year we have the great pleasure of nominating an outstanding leader for the Sir  Peter Blake Leadership Award. Children and staff have a voice in who should be the recipient of this prestigious award. We have a number of outstanding leaders in Year 8 this year, all of whom would have been worthy recipients. Each of these outstanding leaders stand out for different reasons, be it a passion for a cause, a commitment to the team in sport, compassion and support of others or having the initiative to rally the troops when required. Congratulations Year 8 on the fabulous leadership you are displaying this year.
Last Friday, Hinewai Collins, from Westpac, attended our Celebration Assembly to present this year’s Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award.

The citation ... Great leaders don’t say, ‘I’. They don’t think, ‘I’. They think, ‘we’. They think ‘We get there together’. A great leader works with everyone to help them be the best that they can be. As our 2019 recipient of the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award, this philosophy is a perfect fit with your personal leadership style.
At times when a leader is needed in the Kauri Team, a magical phenomenon occurs: our team naturally looks to you, while you simultaneously step forward to lead. This happens with mutual trust, respect and humility. At times when a leader is needed, you deliver.
A great person attracts great people and knows how to hold them together.
Inclusive. Encouraging. Supportive. Kind. Enthusiastic. Fun. These words came up again and again by peers to describe you. Many wrote ‘He really deserves this award’ and we couldn’t agree more. Congratulations, Ben Evans.

School Notices

What a great group of Nature Ninjas we have here at Beckenham! These students from the Koru team picked up all of this rubbish from our grounds last Monday morning.

Unveiling of new, student designed, Environmental Signs for our community

This coming Thursday afternoon, at 2:30pm, down by the ponds on Eastern Tce, we will be meeting as a school to unveil some new community information signs. Several junior students, as a result of an inquiry they had been undertaking, went to our local Community Board late last year, proposing we have local 'pick up rubbish' signs in our community, to help protect our river. Their idea was accepted and we will have a special unveiling at 2.30 on Thurs, beside the mural (toilets) near the ponds.
Whānau are invited to join us to celebrate how We Make a Difference.

Ferndale Drop Off Area and Staff Carpark

The covered drive through turn-around area by Ferndale is solely for use by parents and staff associated with Ferndale School.
Whānau of Beckenham students are asked not to bring cars into the carpark for drop-off or pick-up at any time.

Immunisation information still needed please

With the risk of a measles epidemic still a very real one in New Zealand at present, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education require us to keep up-to-date records of the immunisation status of all students.
As you will have heard in the media recently, for a community to achieve what is known as 'herd immunity' around 95% of the community need to be vaccinated. This protects the other 5% who are not able to be vaccinated for reasons of age or immuno-vulnerability.
We currently are not close to that goal, with the following data being held on our student community with us having no information for 16% of our students.
Jacky will be continuing to make contact with those families for whom we have 'no information' to try and get our records up to date. Please do not be offended if she contacts you - we are trying to protect all of our community by making sure we have accurate and up-to-date information on file. If you know that your child's immunisation status has changed, please would you contact Jacky in the office.

24/7 Youth Work, Cashmere New Life Church and Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto - Partnership

As external funding has been secured, last week we were able to sign our partnership agreement with 24/7 Youth Work and Cashmere New Life Church to secure the ongoing support of a Youth worker for our Year 7/8 team for 10 hours a week. We are very excited about this new venture and the new capability that is being provided for supporting the wellbeing of our tamariki.

Lockdown Review - Information from the Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education has released the final report of the Lockdown Review report. The report is based on input from a wide range of stakeholders, including leaders and staff from schools and early learning services in Canterbury, parents, children, young people, NZ Police and Ministry of Education.

It was evident throughout the Lockdown Review that everyone’s key focus was to improve practice and preparation to ensure children’s safety for any potential future emergency event.

The safety of children and young people is our highest priority and the Ministry of Education are committed to working with schools, early learning services, and NZ Police to respond to the opportunities for improvements that have been identified through the review process.

It has been identified there is more that can be done to support communities to understand their roles during an emergency event. The Ministry of Education will be working with NZ Police to develop guidance for parents and caregivers to support communities responding to an incident and what to do during a lockdown.

Schools and early learning services have a responsibility under Health and Safety legislation to keep staff and children/young people safe. This responsibility needs to be balanced against a parent’s right to take their child out of the school or early learning service should they wish to do so. However, it should be noted that opening the school or early learning service to a parent could be a risk when there is unknown danger.

A copy of the Lockdown Review is available on www.education.govt.nz

If anyone wants to discuss the outcomes, recommendations or our procedures on the day please contact us to arrange a time to meet. You can be confident the current guidance provided by the Ministry of Education will support a review of our existing policies.

Congratulations to ...

Meara Stace

This past weekend Meara competed at both the South Island Secondary and Primary School Championships and the Canterbury Cup in Karate. She competed in the Premier division for the first time and gained a bronze medal in all her competitions, putting her in the top three for 10/11 year olds in the South Island.

Board Talk

Enrolment Zone Review

The Board has been approached by the Ministry of Education to review the school's enrolment zone, due to the school being at risk of overcrowding. St Martins, Thorrington and Somerfield Schools are also being asked to undertake an enrolment zone review. The Ministry has engaged an external consultant who will work with the schools and their communities to undertake this consultation and review next term. We will provide more information to the community about this process as it comes to hand.
Whatever the outcome of the review, it will not have any impact on students already enrolled in the school. If a family is currently 'in-zone' with a child at the school, and the review puts them 'out of zone', siblings will still be able to attend using a grand-parented provision.

Arts Centre Market

My name is Abbie and I am the Makete Co-ordinator for the Arts Centre, I’m getting in touch as I thought some of your music students might be interested in the young buskers day coming up on Sunday the 6th of October.

We want to celebrate young talent whether that’s a solo singer/songwriter, a rocking three-piece band, a dance troupe of 10, or a comedy duo. We are offering 15 or 30 minute time slots for 6 to 16 year olds at the Makete. There is no cost involved and the tamariki are welcome to put out a hat to collect from the audience.

Acts must register their interest as spaces are limited and the programme will be curated to ensure it is varied. I would appreciate if you could take the time to pass this information on to your students, below is a link to the event where they can register:

Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto Newsletter September 6th 2019

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

" Tēnā koutou e te whānau. Next week is Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, or Māori language week! It is an opportunity for concentrated celebration, promotion, and encouragement of our language, Te Reo Māori.
Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori is becoming a major fixture on the national calendar and we will be celebrating it at Beckenham te Kura o Pūroto with our tamariki. We hope you will also join us in the celebrations!
The chosen theme for 2019 is again 'Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’. ‘Kia Kaha’ is well understood in New Zealand English with its meaning of ‘be strong’. We often talk about languages as if they are people – talking about language health, strength and revitalisation. So when we say ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ we’re saying  - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'.

What can we do?
  • Encourage our children by asking what Te Reo Māori they have learned at school. Explore the language together.
  • Use what you know. We can raise the status of our language just by using it.
  • Keep improving your own language, and share what you know with your tamariki. Learn a little use a little! "

You might enjoy starting by downloading the free app "KUPU" to have fun with your tamariki (children) learning te reo kupu (words) for objects by taking a photograph and having the app identify the kupu (word)

Congratulations to our Year 3/4 Kōwhai Team

for all the learning that went into their Wearable Arts over the past few weeks, and culminated in their show last night for whānau. The children have had so much fun, learning and problem-solving together to create the wonderful pieces of art that were on show. A special thank you to the staff and parents who supported them with this important mahi (work).

School Strike 4 Climate - 3rd rally on Friday, 27 September

The School Strike 4 Climate movement is hosting another rally on the 27th of September at 1 pm in Cathedral Square. This event is an intergenerational strike which aims to put pressure on the New Zealand government and governments worldwide to take effective action to combat the impacts of climate change. Please find attached a document entailing our national core demands and more information about who we are.

The rally will be educational and empowering for students who want to make a difference. The event aligns with the New Zealand Educational Curriculum, of which’s principles of learning include ‘learning to learn’, ‘community engagement’, and ‘future focus’. “Future focus is about supporting learners to recognise that they have a stake in the future, and a role and responsibility as citizens to take action to help shape that future.” (Education Review Office Report, July 2012).

The strikes focus on empowering young people to realise the impact they can have, as well as supporting everyone attending to realise their role in preventing the damage climate change can, and already is, causing.

We have a number of students in our school who are taking leadership within our community in the area of climate change and sustainability and we are very supportive of the learning and leadership that this involves, and of the difference that they are showing the world that young people can make.

We know that many of our families may want to support their children to participate in this rally. We need you to sign your child out of school that day if they are going to be attending the rally, or to advise Jacky in the office if you have arranged for another parent to sign your child out and take them to the rally.

Junior Neighbourhood Support

Kia ora Whānau,

It is wonderful to have the contact with your lovely children when I come into the school. I am keen to give more awards out to the children who are doing great things in the community to help others, the environment or promote safety. Could you please have a think about the children you know from Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto and if you know they are doing some great things please nominate them for an award? What is PB4L?

PB4L Introduction Video
PB4L ‘Positive behaviour for learning’
PB4L School-wide is about teaching behaviour, just as we teach other subjects.

“ If a student does not know how to read, we teach
If a student does not know how to swim, we teach
If a student does not know how to multiply, we teach
If a student does not know how to behave, we ......”

We have now introduced two PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) lessons with our first one focusing on how ‘we move through doorways’. We have had great success with this and the children are starting to think more about how to go outside or inside without bumping into anyone and also thinking about opening doors for others. It has been wonderful to see. Of course, we will need to revisit this so that it stays fresh in the children’s minds. Just last week, we launched our second lesson which is focusing on how we look after our belongings and specifically, how we can keep our cubbies tidy and clean. We have been running a daily cubby competition to see which team has the tidiest cubbies and this is really lifting the game. Cubby tidiness has improved hugely! We will continue to focus on this over the next weeks as we want the children to take responsibility for showing that ‘We Care’ by looking after their things and consequently, our school environment.

As a staff, we are focusing on Active Supervision (duty) which involves being more interactive with the students when we are on duty and pointing out the good behaviours that we can see and thereby moving away from focusing on the undesirable behaviours. We want break times to be a positive and enjoyable experience for all. It is also a great way to get to know all the children too. We are also going to be looking at the ‘hotspots’ we have identified and targeting those areas where issues tend to arise so we can try to preempt anything occurring.

Sunhats
Looking at the weather today you might wonder if the sun will shine again, but I'm sure sunny days are not that far away.  During term 4 it is compulsory for all students to wear a hat.  These are available for purchase from the school office, the PTA second hand uniform shop and from Mainland Uniforms at 189 Peterborough Street.  Caps are not an acceptable form of sun protection for wearing at school.  Please name your child's hat on the inside.

Kia ora koutou

Congratulations!

We are thrilled to hear that Beckenham students were awarded two of the four Leadership Scholarships on offer at Cashmere High School for 2020. Congratulations to Ben Evans and Lucy Gray. They are automatically members of the Student Council at Cashmere for 2020 as part of this award, and we wish them all the very best with their leadership journeys.

Calendar Art

This has been our Visual Arts focus across the school for the first four weeks of this term. This is now being completed and collected in, and the PTA will be sending you information about how to order in the next newsletter.

Physical Wellbeing - Nits/head lice and Gastro Bugs are rife!

PLEASE check your children's hair for nits (eggs) and louse (head lice bugs) weekly, and actively treat them to get rid of both eggs and bugs. We have reported cases across all hubs and these will only disappear if EVERYONE is vigilant and treats them regularly. Please do not be offended if we call you and ask you to come and collect your child if we notice that they have nits - we need to try and stop them being spread from person to person.

Gastro Bugs

We have a number of staff and students currently away sick with a vomiting/gastro bug. PLEASE keep your child at home for 48 hours after the last vomiting (or diarrhea) event to prevent the spread of this bug.

Swimming programme Review - Kahikatea and Kōwhai teams

We are keen to review the way that we deliver aquatic education for our children. We have had some helpful feedback via email from a small number of parents and we would like to invite those who haven't emailed, to give feedback through this short survey. This survey will close on Monday 2nd September at 3pm.

We would also like to invite all Year 1-4 whānau to a meeting in the staffroom on Tuesday, 3rd September from 2:15pm - 3:00pm to discuss aquatic education options going forward.

Keeping Ourselves Safe

Keeping Ourselves Safe [KOS] consists of a comprehensive range of child protection lessons and resources to help students learn and apply a range of safety skills that they can use when interacting with others.

At Beckenham, all our teams will be working with this material as part of our Health curriculum this term.

Constable Ross Mitchell supports our staff with the implementation of this programme and he will be in the school running a whānau information session on Wednesday, 28th August from 2:15-3:00pm.

Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival - tickets now on sale

Beckenham Te Kura o Puroto Year 5/6 choir will be performing on the evening of Thursday 7th November. Tickets are now on sale at Ticketek. This year marks 80 years since the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival began. Titled ‘You’re the Voice’, this year’s programme features songs from the past eight decades of the festival, as well as some new ones. Some parents or grandparents may remember singing some of the songs themselves as children in the massed or representative choirs during their youth! This year is also the first year that the festival will be held in the Town Hall since the earthquakes. We encourage you to get hold of your tickets asap, as the Town Hall has limited seats in comparison to our previous venue, Horncastle Arena.

Sharing our cultures - India

We have many wonderful cultures represented at Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto. This term, we will be sharing and celebrating our cultures at Celebration assemblies. Last week, Tiya, Ishaan and Sachit shared about India. They taught us how to say 'Namaste' (Hello), what the flag looks like and shared interesting facts. Did you know that India makes the most movies in the world, and is the second most populated country in the world? They also shared some of their family pictures.

Outdoor Spaces

Update and invitation to hear about the proposed plans...

The Outdoor Spaces team have been charged with bringing together feedback and giving input into the ongoing design of our outdoor spaces. The first project they worked on, and have completed, was the Pūkaki Play Space. This is already being well utilised and enjoyed by our children.
The second project was the planting of heritage apple trees to make a small orchard on site. This has almost been completed and Paulette and the children in the Kōwhai team have been the 'activators' for this project, down the western side of the Tahaki building, on the way to BOSCO.

The third, and biggest stage, is the development of the large space in front of Kopua (Administration Building). Being a large space, it has taken lots of thought and planning, and it has been contingent on getting surrounding drainage and asphalt issues worked through, the last of which happened in the July holidays.

You are invited to come and hear the Outdoor Spaces team talk about the proposed plan, on Tuesday 3 September from 5-6pm in the staffroom.

Board Chat - August

The Board of Trustees would like to first of all thank the entire school community for a fantastic response to the voting for BoT representatives. This was well above the average voter response across Canterbury schools, and goes to show just how active and engaged our whānau community are with our school.

We would also like to thank our outgoing board members and welcome our 4 new board members: Carmel Wade, Marcel Frei, Lisa Taylor and Jules May. Over the next few newsletters we will endeavour to give you a profile of each of the board members – so you can get to know us all better.

This term has seen the opening of the Pukaki play space. As well as thanking all of the whānau who helped with working bees, as a Board we wanted to say a very big thank you to the PTA, for all the hard work and contributions they have put into enabling this ongoing project. We are certainly looking forward to the next stage of work, and we encourage anyone who is interested to attend the information evening on the 3rd September.

School Donations – Thank you to all those families that have already paid the donation. It is this support that enables the school to provide all the extra activities we believe are important to ensure a holistic education for all our students: trips, camps, swimming, etc, throughout the year.
Did you know that your school donations are tax-deductible? You can find more information at the IRD website.
