Kia ora koutou

Our primary focus at the moment is doing everything we can to keep our staff safe and healthy so that school can stay open for your children. We need to maintain high staffing levels on site to be able to deliver the best teaching and learning experiences that we can. If and when it is needed, we will re-instate our online learning website, however we do expect all children to be attending school unless they are sick or self-isolating.

We are being deliberate about taking a conservative approach to the guidelines that we are getting from the Ministry of Education and erring on the side of caution to mitigate potential risk where possible.

You can help us with this by:
  • attending your child's online learning conference (with your child there too, please!)
  • providing your child with a mask every day
  • getting your child vaccinated
  • contacting your child's teacher via email if you want to communicate with them (and asking them to call you if needed)
  • staying off the school site unless you need to come into the office for something, when you will need to wear a mask and scan in using the COVID Tracer QR code or sign in manually.
  • keeping your child at home if they have ANY symptoms that are COVID symptoms, and getting them tested.

Learning Conferences - now online - Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd February

Due to the changing Omicron situation, we have made the decision today to hold our Learning Conferences next week as online rather than face-to-face meetings. No change will be needed to your existing bookings, and new bookings can still be made!

On Monday, your child's home-group teacher will be sending you an email with a link to the online meeting. This will be a ZOOM link. (To access this link, you may need to to download Zoom onto your phone /tablet/computer.) If you would prefer a Google Meet link (gmail address required for this), please let your teacher know. The link will be sent to the email of the caregiver who has made the booking. You are able to share that link with another caregiver if they wish to join from another device/place.

Remember that your child needs to be part of the conference too!

Please think about what you would like to share with the teacher about your child, and use these questions as prompts.

Getting ready for your start of year Learning Conference:
  • Talk with your child about what they enjoy learning at school – what they feel they are good at:
  • Are there any barriers/challenges that get in the way of them learning?
  • What would they like to get better at?
  • What kinds of things help them to learn best? (e.g. where they sit, people they do/don’t work with, need for breaks/food/exercise, etc.)
  • Is there anything about your culture, religion, family dynamic that would be helpful for us to know to be able to support your child?
  • Have there been any changes in your family situation that would be helpful for the teacher to know about in order to support your child?
  • Any wonderings, questions?

Masks



As mentioned in the earlier email today, the new government requirement is that all children from Year 4, and all staff wear masks inside at school. 

This is slightly trickier for us with a Year 3/4 team. We are going to be taking a pragmatic approach at Year 3/4 and encouraging all of the Year 3/4 children to wear a mask, but not being insistent on that. 

In Koru (New Entrants) and Kahikatea (Year 1/2) children are not required to wear a mask, and they are most welcome to if you/they would prefer that they do. 

Our staff from NE through to Year 4 are being encouraged to wear masks, and may choose, from time to time not to if the mask is a significant barrier to communication.

Please provide your child with a clean, named mask every day, with a spare named mask in their bag if possible.

Any meetings at school will be held with masks on and caregivers will be expected to comply with this request for the wellbeing of all.

Pick up and Drop Off

To minimise risk for everyone, we are going to continue with the drop-off and pick up at the gate system that we had running successfully last year.

Drop-off in the mornings:
  • When you bring your child to school in the morning, you will need to bring them to one of the entrances and say goodbye to them there.
  • For everyone’s safety, and to manage contact tracing, we cannot have lots of parents coming onto our site each day.
  • In the morning, from 8:30am - 9am, we will have staff at the front entrance of the school, and at the 3 min drop off zone on Sandwich Road.
  • If you want to handover your child to a staff member, you can do that at the flagpole, or from your car at the 3min drop-off zone.
  • If your child is more independent, you can ‘kiss and drop’ your child at any entrance to the school.
  • Children coming to school on their own can use any entrance to the school.
  • If there is a very particular reason that you need to come onto the school site, such as going to the office to hand in medication, you will need to scan your QR code and ONLY go to the office.
  • As you will appreciate, we cannot manage large numbers of caregivers going through this process in the morning, and still manage physical distancing without congestion. 
  • Caregivers are asked not to go into learning spaces at Red level.
  • If you can prepare your child with a positive message about how the handover at the gate will work, it will set them up for success.
Pickup at the end of the day:
  • Our New Entrants and Kahikatea (Year 1&2) children will finish school at 2:45pm each day, and their teachers will walk them to the Sandwich Road entrance by the flagpole and hand them over to their caregivers. HOWEVER, if they have an older brother or sister, they will wait in their hub with a teacher, and they will be walked out to the Sandwich Road entrance at 3pm.
  • If children are going to BOSCO, they will wait until 3pm in their hub and then they will be collected by the BOSCO staff.
  • All Year 3-8 children will finish at 3pm each day as usual.

Stationery


Please make sure that your child comes to school next Thursday with their stationery so that they are ready to start the new school year straight away. Please name all exercise books.
Stationery lists were sent home at the end of last year, and can be found here on the school website.

Chromebooks (BYOD)


All students from Years 5-8 are encouraged to have their own Chromebook to bring to school each day. Whilst this is not a requirement, with the increased likelihood that there may be periods of time during this year that individuals or groups may have to self-isolate, we are strongly recommending this if you are able to manage it.

Sunhats & Drink Bottles

As always, please ensure that you send your child to school next week with a named red or black sunhat (bucket or wide-brimmed) and a named drink bottle.

 

Changes of Address, phone, email and family living situations

If you have changed your address, telephone number, email and/or family living situation (e.g. parents are now living in separate households) PLEASE email Jacky at office@beckenham.school.nz as soon as possible with this information.

Sick Children

As always, and especially at this time, please keep children at home if they are unwell.
Anyone with any cold or flu symptoms that could be Covid-19 is asked to get a test and isolate at home until a negative result is returned.
The most common early symptoms of the Omicron variant are a sore or scratchy throat, and a runny nose – if you or your child have these symptoms, get tested.
If children present at school with any of the above symptoms, we will be isolating them and calling you to come and collect them.

Individual Medication for children

If your child requires medication to be kept at school, and/or administered through the school day or because of a medical event, please bring the medication (clearly named) to the school office. You will also be required to complete a  Medicine Authority Form, which provides the school with information on how the medicine is to be administered, when and how much.

Individual Health Action Plan

If your child has an Individual Health Action Plan, e.g. Action Plan for Anaphylaxis, that has been updated, please bring that to the school office for a copy to be made.

EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom)

Whilst we are at this Red Traffic Light setting and heading into the start of the Omicron outbreak, we have made the decision to keep our students at school and not engage in any non-essential 'out-of-school' activities. We are being encouraged by the Ministry of Education to not engage in activities that mix students from different schools. We know that contact tracing will be easier if we haven't done this, and we are going to review this on a term-by-term basis. This means that inter-school sports activities will not be happening this term, nor will there be camps, trips or visits that increase risks of transmission.

At this stage, our Year 7/8 students will continue to bus to Christchurch South Intermediate each Tuesday morning for Technology. They do not mix with the students at South whilst they are there.

Itinerant Music Lessons and CSM Outreach Strings and Band

There will still be the opportunity for individual music lessons at school this year, however teaching space is going to be at a premium so numbers may be limited. We have itinerant teachers who offer lessons in piano, guitar and ukulele.
Christchurch School of Music (CSM) run an Outreach Strings programme (Violin, viola and cello), and a Band programme (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, bass guitar, tuned percussion and percussion.)

Assemblies and Activities within the school

Following the Ministry of Education guidelines, we will be organising the school so that each team operates independently of other teams. At break times, when children will all be outside at the same time, we will be asking them to play with other children in their team, rather than mixing across teams.
During class time, we will not be engaging in activities that require children to mix across teams. This means that we will not be having whole school assemblies until further notice. 

BOSCO

BOSCO will continue to run as long as they are able to manage staffing at a safe level. All of their staff are wearing masks when working with the children. BOSCO will try to organise the children into separate groups at BOSCO - NE - Year 4 and Year 5-8. Again, this is to minimise the risk of infection crossing between groups, to support contact tracing.

Kauri Whānau Year 8 Photos

It was lovely to hear so much positive feedback about our Leavers' Assembly yesterday. We are looking forward to getting the full video of the ceremony, including the songs that were cut during the live stream because of the youtube copywrite regulations. Once we have this, we will make it available to you.

Thanks to those who collected their yearbooks yesterday afternoon when they finally arrived. These can also be collected this morning. 

Below are some photos that were taken at the pool party and after the ceremony. If you would like a higher definition copy of one of the photos, please email Nicky.  We have also shared a folder on google drive with the children with many more photos. It is called 'leavers lunch 2021'. It would pay for the children to log in and access this before the end of the year when their accounts will be closed down. They can download these photos.

A huge thanks to the PTA for putting together a delicious lunch for our leavers'. The ice-cream sundae bar was a huge hit. Also thanks for setting up the photo frame; love those graphic design skills!

We have a table in the hub with some left-behinds. There are headphones, glasses, a leavers' certificate and a number of pencil cases. Collection today would be appreciated.

Safe and happy holidays everyone and all the best for a smooth start to high school. We always love seeing past students and they are welcome to drop by and visit next year, as levels allow.





























Kauri Whānau Weekly Update: Term 4 Week 9

End of year reminders:

  • The Year 8 pool and pizza party is on Monday between 4 and 6pm. No money required. The best way to get there is to park on Dyers Pass Road by Cashmere Primary and walk through the school, down past the tennis courts. Liz will put a sign by the back gate. The street address is 79 Dyers Pass Road. They have a lovely outdoor pool and also access to the school playground. 
  • Year 8 arrive at school at the normal time on Tuesday, dressed in their best clothes.
  • Graduation assembly live stream details have been sent out via Hero.
  • Year 8 finish school after lunch on Tuesday.
  • Year 7 are planning to have a water fun activity on Wednesday morning, weather permitting, and will finish school at 12:30.

Nau mai te wero: Molly, you are not afraid to go beyond your comfort zone. You give 110% to all that you do whether that is running cross country, performing at ShowQuest or solving a tricky maths problem. 

Mā tātou katoa te waka e hoe: Molly, you are a fabulous team player. In sports teams, as a leadernclusi and as a learner you have proved time and time again that you can work effectively in any group dynamic. No matter who is in your team, you are inclusive and you have their back. 

He taonga te ako: Molly, you consistently push yourself to learn and grow. You know that learning can, at times, be difficult and that it can take time. You willingly put in the hard yards and reap the rewards. 

Nā mātou he rerekē te ao: Molly, you are proactive in being the change that you want to see in the world. One example of this is when you created a weekly newsletter during lockdown to entertain, inform and uplift your community.

Nevannah, you encompass everything it is to be a successful learner. Andi, you are a committed, outgoing person who supports causes that you are passionate about. You have been an important part of our Kauri’s Diversity Group, showing commitment, compassion and acceptance of those around them. You made a difference by writing a powerful speech, educating others about how important it is to be who you are no matter what others think. Mahi whakamataku 

Emily, you are a bubbly, kind, inclusive person who seeks to make a positive change in the world around you. You are actively involved in many fundraising events held around the school, doing your part for those in need and celebrating these causes for change. You go above and beyond to ease the load of others around you by lending a hand, encouraging and doing everything with a smile.  Continue to find the spark in others, and the world will shine back on you.

Thomas, you have such a welcoming and kind nature. No matter who is in your group, you treat them with respect and value their input. Leading alongside your peers is your style and this supports others to give their best. Thank you!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported our school, our staff and our tamariki through this year. In a non-covid year, we would have had multiple occasions to publicly, and in person, thank people within usual school events, however, this hasn't been possible this year.

A huge thank-you to our Board of Trustees who have shown wise governance, care and support of me, our staff, our tamariki, our school and school community through this year. Ably led by Matthew Macdonald as Board Chair, our board members are: Lisa Taylor, Marcel Frei, Sampson Karst (Ngāi Tahu), Jude Clarke, Richard Scott, Suran Dickson, Nicole Forster and Anna Reid (staff trustee). 

To our PTA - Thank you! You have successfully navigated your way through another challenging year, supporting our staff, tamariki and community with your energy, pastoral care and fundraising. A special thanks to the co-chairs - Nicola Arnott and Jody Smith. We all appreciate the time, energy and creative enthusiasm that each member of the PTA brings in support of us all - thank you!

To all of our whānau - THANK YOU! This year has again provided many challenges in how we have had to rethink the ways that we physically engage with whānau and we appreciate that this may have been challenging and even frustrating at times. Thank you for continuing to drop off and pick up at the gates. Thank you for wearing masks every time you come onto the school grounds. Thank you for providing vaccine information, vehicle information, and being willing to do police checks when we have requested you to... for the safety of our children. Your support of us in following the health and safety guidelines we have been required to work under has been very much appreciated. Thank you for coming to talk with us when you have had a worry or concern, rather than letting it build up - we appreciate being able to work together to find solutions and move forward. Thank you for the support that many of you have given with trips, transport and with sharing your expertise and time with our staff and tamariki.
Next year will look different again, as we understand what operating under the Covid Protection Framework (Traffic Light system) will look like at school. We will provide clear communication in the new year about this before school starts. Like this year, we do anticipate that these guidelines will continue to change and evolve as the Covid situation in our community changes.

And finally, to our staff - Wow! It is such a privilege to work with you all.  To Sue and Jo - our Deputy Principals - you are our rocks and 'you rock'! Your patience, wisdom and leadership is appreciated each day by us all. To our Leadership Team - Nicky, Steve, Laura, Amber and Elizabeth - thank you for the warm, intuitive, steadfast and caring way you approach each new challenge; always looking for solutions and ways to improve and work forward together. To our amazing teachers, we appreciate each and every one of you and the care and energy you bring to your work each day to provide the best that you can for our tamariki. To our growing team of Teaching Assistants - thank you for the work that you do with our children who need the extra support, love and understanding that you are so willing to give in your small group and 1:1 interactions. To all of our relieving teachers this year, and there have been many - thank you for the way that you work to quickly understand how we work together at Beckenham, and fit so smoothly into each team that you have worked in. To our staff in the office and library - Jacky, Reihana, Rachel and Anne - you approach your work with care and warmth and this is evident in the patient way you approach each new challenge you are presented with. To Tony, our caretaker - thank you! The role you have is often a thankless one and we appreciate very much the support you give on a daily basis to both your general duties and the emergency requests that you are asked to fulfil. To our Ferndale colleagues - this year has been extra challenging as you have had to work in your own separate bubble since August - we value the strong professional relationship we share and the way that we continue to learn from one another. And to two special people who are contracted to our school - Dave from 24/7 Youth Work, and Whaea Cath our Kapa Haka tutor - we consider you part of our staff and really appreciate the wisdom, expertise and care of our tamariki that you bring to your mahi. 

To those of you who are leaving our school community - we wish you all the very best, wherever you are heading. To those of you returning next year, we look forward to seeing you again in 2022!
I wish each and every one of you a 'Meri Kirihimete' and I hope that you are able to enjoy some time with your whānau to relax and refresh over the summer holidays.

...and to finish with some fun and caring...

To finish our school year by demonstrating We Care for others and with some Christmas fun for ourselves, we encourage everyone (whānau, staff and tamariki) to wear Christmas accessories on Wednesday, our final morning of school for the year, in return for bringing a donation to our City Mission Christmas Foodbank Collection. We will have collection bins in the office every day this week, and at the flagpole on Wednesday at drop-off and pick up time.

Citizen of the Week

Layla McCallum - Year 6

Layla, what a positive person you are to be around!  It gives your teachers such pleasure to receive a cheery greeting from you every morning. This sets us up for a positive day. You love learning! You are always keen to contribute to discussions and you actively listen to others. You are an amazing friend and such a kind and caring person. Ka pai to mahi.

School Notices

Year 8 Graduation - Tuesday 11am

The link for this live-stream event will be reshared with Year 8 whānau via HERO on Monday. For the privacy of our tamariki, we are not able to share this link publicly. Year 8 whānau are welcome to share the link directly with friends and whānau, but are requested not to share the link on any public platforms.

Te Tuna Tāone / Urban Eel Group

Kia ora/hello we are the Te Tuna Tāone - Urban eel group and we take care of our river and the living things inside of it. We went around our neighbourhood putting blue eels (tuna) and fish (kokopu) next to stormwater drains. 


So, when walking around the Beckenham neighbourhood look out for drains with blue fish or eels around them. The blue fish remind us that the water that goes into those drains goes to the river so we need to keep these drains clean. You can find some of these stormwater drains on Sandwich Road and Eastern Terrace. These drains mean that if rubbish or dirty polluted water goes into our river it will become worse not only for us but for the living things inside of it like our eels and fish. You can help by picking up rubbish and putting it in the red bin.  Let's look after our river and our very special longfin tuna and pick up 5 pieces of rubbish every day!

Gangsters! Cream pies!  Singing! Dancing! And Splurge guns...

Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto ākonga, Aine Smyth is currently in rehearsals with Elmwood Players for the hilarious family musical BUGSY MALONE! 

Based on the hit 1976 film originally starring a preteen Scott Baio and Jodi Foster, and featuring a catchy, swinging score by the composer of The Muppet Movie. Two gangs, comprised completely of children, square off in a 1920s rivalry of Capone-ian standards. Dandy Dan's gang has gotten the upper hand since obtaining the "splurge" gun. Now, Fat Sam and his bumbling buffoons are in real trouble! Bugsy Malone, a one-time boxer, is thrust not-so-willingly into the gangster limelight when he becomes the last chance that Fat Sam's gang has of surviving. All Bugsy really wants to do is spend time with his new love, Blousey, but that just isn't in the cards for our hero. Bugsy Malone is a classic musical comedy not to be missed.

Band Programme Music Lessons at your School
Does your child want to learn a musical instrument?  Did you know they can learn at school and play in a concert band from their first day? 
 
The CSM Outreach Band Programme combines individual lessons with ensemble playing right from the first note.  Being part of a band can provide students with skills that will last a lifetime.  As well as the wonderful musical benefits students will gain valuable social, physical and academic skills.  And most importantly, it’s fun! 

Students must be in year 5 or above and can choose from the following instruments: Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute, Trumpet, Trombone, Bass Guitar, Percussion, French Horn.
Band Programme Fees
The Christchurch School of Music provides the Outreach Band Programme at your school. We work hard to keep the fees as affordable as possible. The fee for a standard 15 minute lesson per student in the band programme is $157.50/term or $630/year. Band is free to all students learning in the Outreach Band Programme. If you have a Community Services Card you may be eligible for a 50% discount on the base year’s fees. 

Students start in the Training Band, then move onto Concert Band and can then be invited to join Youth Band or Jazz Band.  Click to check out some of our level 2 performances. To enrol, click here to go to the enrolment form.

The Community Dental Service will be providing dental care for children enrolled with our service during the upcoming school holidays.  The clinics will offer treatment and relief of pain sessions by appointment only.   To make an appointment please call/email our Contact Centre which operates between the hours of 8am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday throughout the holidays (closed between 25th December and 10th January).  If your child requires dental care during the time we are closed contact your family dentist.
The following Dental Clinics will be open during these school holidays:

·         Hillmorton Clinic, Sylvan Street, Christchurch – from Monday 10th January

·         Aranui Clinic, 240 Breezes Road, Aranui – on 12th, 18th, 19th, 25th and 26th January

·         Hornby Clinic, 2 Hei Hei Road, Hornby - from Monday 10th January

·         Timaru Clinic, Level 1, 18 Woollcombe Street, Timaru – from Monday 10th January

The clinics will offer appointments between 8.15am and 4.45pm for school-age and preschool children.  If your child has dental pain because of an accident, please contact your dentist in the first instance.

Our Hauora

Our Hauora have two programmes coming up this summer for tamariki:
- Hauora Heroes Holiday Adventure - 20th, 21st December 
- Hauora Heroes Summer Adventure 17th - 21st January 

These programmes are founded on building resilience and confidence. Activities include mindfulness, learning about emotions and self regulation, creativity, connection games, cooking/baking and outside movement.

Every year, Risingholme offer over 320 courses. There are the regular programmes of art, craft, woodwork, music and educational courses at Risingholme, and we always considering new course ideas and adding to the ‘New and Interesting’ section of the website. Some of the courses include:

  • There is the possibility of financial support for WINZ clients through support the Course Participation Assistance scheme, which is financial help towards the costs of attending a short-term training course or programme. Check in with your WINZ case manager about your eligibility.
