Koru News Term 4 Week 3

Kia ora whanau,

This week we started practising for our athletics day coming up next Thursday, 11th November. The children have been learning the techniques involved in competing in high jump, sprints, the gumboot throw and the bean bag toss. The children have been really enjoying trying something new. At this stage, because we are still at Level 2, unfortunately parents are unable to attend the event. We will endeavour to take lots of photos of your gorgeous children embracing 'We Love Challenge' to share with you following the event.

This week our shared reading focus has been 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. Children have joined in reading parts of the story, retold the story and thought of different words to describe how the caterpillar was feeling. They have made many beautiful caterpillar and butterfly crafts. They have also been involved in class role plays and hot-seating in order to spark their thinking beyond the story.  Hot-seating is a drama strategy in which a character or characters, played by the teacher or a child, are interviewed by the rest of the group. It invites children to recount a specific event, explore motivation and multiple perspectives/experiences related to a theme, topic, event, or an idea within a story.

We have also been busy exploring numbers in our play this week.

Showing 'We Get There Together' in our Learning Through Play.

During Learning Through Play last week some of our tamariki made some little peg doll fairies to play with in our fairy garden. On Friday the children got an opportunity to use their Learning Through Play time to play in the garden. They created some very cute scenes with items they had been collecting. We especially loved the swimming pool for the fairies to bathe in!

Reminder: School will be Closed next Friday - Canterbury Anniversary Day

We were grateful for the fine weather today that enabled us to have our Celebration Assembly outside. The children have quickly adapted to the outside assemblies and we enjoyed sharing in the successes of a number of our students. A large number of Citizen of the Week certificates were given out, most from last term when we hadn't had assemblies. Strong themes that ran through the awards were kindness, respect, and being committed to doing their best. Congratulations to all!

We also celebrated the success of some of our Year 8 students who received Gold Kete Badges and Academic Cups. Photos of these will be shared next week.

Vaccination Update

As you know, by 16th November, all adults who work or volunteer in any capacity on a school site in New Zealand, when children are present, must be vaccinated with at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination. We are well underway with gathering this information from our staff, and we appreciate the support of whānau involved who have also provided us with their vaccination details. This information is kept in a confidential register.

This week we have been advised by the Ministry of Education that we are also required to keep a register of COVID vaccination information for eligible students - ie, those aged 12 and over.
Next week Jacky will be emailing out a vaccine survey to whānau of all our eligible students requesting their vaccination information. Please be clear that there is NO suggestion that students must be vaccinated to attend school. The Ministries of Education and Health are wanting this information collected in the event that we have cases at school.

Ngā mihi nui

Year 5-8 Athletics Results

Our senior athletics day last week embodied our school value 'We get there together'. It started with a dedicated team of seniors arriving at school early to help get the park ready for the day ahead. We kicked off the day, as we usually do, with the mid-distance track event; an optional additional event taken on by those who are keen to take on the challenge of a longer run. This was followed by rotations of field events and the sprint heats.

Throughout the day, we were impressed by the way the children participated in the events and encouraged each other. We are really proud of the spirit with which they participated in the day's events. Some children were striving to achieve their best, some showed leadership by supporting the running of a rotation whilst others role-modeled 'getting involved and having a jolly good time while doing so'. One example of this was in a Year 8 sprint heat when, after starters orders, the line of children joined hands and skipped down the track. We loved seeing the children approach the day with positivity.

The day concluded with the sprint finals and the House Relay. The House Relay was an exceptionally exciting race with Tennyson and Waimea battling it out over the last few lengths. In the end it was Tennyson who took the win, with Waimea nanoseconds behind them.

A huge thank you to the parents who supported us with running this event and to the seniors who helped out either before, during or after the event.

Photos from Athletics Day have been posted to an album on our school FB page.

Kahikatea Newsletter Week 3 Term 4

Kia Ora Whānau,

What a busy start to the term it has been! We are loving seeing all the tamariki with their hats, drink bottles and bright smiles each day. Thank-you for all you are doing to support them and us, especially with the level 2 working conditions. A gentle reminder too, that if your child is sniffing, sneezing or coughing please keep them at home. It doesn't take long for even a little bug to spread.

Student Language Therapy Student Teachers

We are very fortunate to have two student language teachers in our kura this term. They are working with tamariki in team Kahikatea and Koru. Lisa is overseeing their work with small groups of students and one to one to help build speech, language and literacy skills.

My name is Leianne. I’m one of the speech-language therapist student working with the children in the school. I’m in my final block placement block after 4 years of studying. I feel very privileged to be working amongst the most dependable and passionate staff.  I look forward to supporting the students through fun and interactive activities to advance them in their speech, language and social abilities.

My name is Gurleen Kaur and I'm a Speech Therapy student at the University of Canterbury. I'm currently working alongside the amazing staff of Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto and the lovely children as a part of my speech therapy work. This has been a great opportunity. I'm looking forward to learning from all the staff and giving back in all ways as I can.

Gurleen

Athletics

We are working hard with our Athletics practises! We are enjoying hurdles, relays, long jump and shot put. Please make sure you send your child's named hat, water bottle and running shoes every day.  We will have our final athletics on Thursday if weather allows. We cannot invite whānau due to level 2 restrictions, but will do our best to take lots of lovely photos to share.

Wellbeing this Week

We have been learning about and showing Respect, which is demonstrate through all our school values especially 'We Make a Difference'. We have talked about what respect looks like when we are speaking and treating others. We respect ourselves, others, our teachers and things. Watch this video and discuss with your tamariki.

How can we show respect?

For our value 'We Make a Difference' we have been making an extra effort to notice and pick up the rubbish we see. We have made a special effort to do a rubbish sweep of the junior playground each day, and also look after our cubby area.

Discovery

Enjoy photos from our recent Discovery sessions:

We continue to appreciate donations of:

  •  Newspaper
  • Construction Boxes (cereal boxes, egg cartons etc.)
  • Crafting items (beads, cardbard, ribbon etc.)
