Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

It has been an exciting fortnight including a visit from the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern and her entourage.  Jacinda's visit lasted 30 minutes and she delighted us all.  The children showed a real interest in the information on climate change that was shared and provided some funny moments when answering some questions that Jacinda posed.

Jacinda -  "Who knows what I do for a job?"
New Entrant - "You are the President of New Zealand."
Jacinda - "Great guess, I work with some other politicians in the Beehive in Wellington. What do you think we do there?"
New Entrant - "Make honey!"
Jacinda - "Well I do have 2 beehives at my home and we get honey from those.  Does anyone else know what we do in the beehive?"
Year 4 child - "You make the rules!"

Lucy Gray and her Climate Change team shared 15 minutes with the Prime Minister sharing ideas, discussing the government's intentions and asking questions.  What an incredible opportunity.

The other excitement has been the installation of our new signage around the school.  If you haven't already, please come into the office and see our wonderful values wall that has been delighting visitors all week.  The Logos on the back of the hall and on the front of the school show very clearly "this is our place."

This week we say farewell to Cath Barrie who has won a position working with the RTLB (Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour) service. Cath has worked at Beckenham for the past 12 years. We have valued the contributions, expertise and leadership that Cath has shared through teaching across the school, in our  Learning Support programmes and with our diverse learners.   Thank you for everything.  All the very best for a wonderful opportunity for professional growth Cath.

We welcome Georgie Jones who is going to work in Cath's position in the Kauri team from next week. We know that Georgie’s great skills and teaching experience will be well utilised and she will be a wonderful addition to the team.

Have a very happy and relaxing Queens Birthday break.  We look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.

ICAS Assessments

The University of New South Wales is offering your child to take part in the ICAS assessment programme.

ICAS is an independent, skills-based assessment program which recognises and rewards student achievement. ICAS is unique, being the most comprehensive generally available suite of academic assessments for primary and secondary school students.

Entries are administered at school. For further information, please consult the ICAS website - https://www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/icas/about. Each participant will receive a certificate and a detailed report of their performance.

This year, we will be offering Digital Technologies, Science, English, and Maths assessments.

Each assessment costs $15.00 to enter (please note that this has increased from previous years, due to the transition from paper-based assessments to an online test). Payment for these competition fees will need to be paid in full by Friday 2 August 2019. You can pay with EFTPOS at the school office or online school's bank account (ASB 12-3148-0131641-000) with the reference ‘ICAS’ and child’s name as the code. If you wish to enter your child, please fill out the form here.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email - hannah.elliott@beckenham.school.nz.

Year 7-8 Writer’s Club

The children at Writers' Club in Year 7/8 have been working incredibly hard on writing a narrative to be  submitted into a writing competition through the School for Young Writers. The brief was to write a story of no more than 500 words that had mystery at its heart. The children's imaginations ran wild!

Last week, we found out that Max Graham and Florence Gerard were awarded a Highly Commended in the year 7/8 category. There were only 10 of these awards presented. Here are the stories the students have written. MYSTERY STORIES

Kia ora koutou

This week we celebrated Support Staff Day on Thursday with a lovely morning tea.  We are so lucky to have such a wonderful team of teaching assistants and support staff supporting us all at Beckenham.  We also welcomed two new teaching assistants to our staff this week.  Scott Baker and Jamie John join us for term two to work in Kowhai and Koru.

We ended the week with a couple of very special highlights.  The first was our first session of Waiata for the school for the year.  Steve Cooke and our Tuakana Team led the session which included some new waiata and revisiting some favourites.  A wonderful opportunity for our whole school to get together to learn Te Reo and sing together.

The second highlight was watching the Intermediate Hub’s dress rehearsal for their Showquest performance on Tuesday evening in the Town Hall.  The performance, which is approximately 5 minutes long, evoked a range of reactions, smiles, sighs, gasps and claps from the children.  Many of the adults in the audience also reported goosebumps and tears.  An incredibly powerful performance.  Thank you to the Kauri Team for their creativity, persistence and all the extra hours that go into making costumes, the choreography and planning.  We are all so proud of you.

Happiness is Autumn leaves!!!!

Have a happy Autumn weekend and we will see you on Tuesday after our Staff Only Day on Monday.

PB4L

PB4L–SW is one of a range of initiatives within the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) portfolio led by the Ministry of Education. PB4L came out of the Taumata Whanonga behaviour summit in 2009, which was convened in response to concerns about student behaviour in New Zealand schools.
PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) will be implemented over several years - this is not a quick fix.

What have we achieved over the past two terms:

The Ministry of Education is holding various workshops throughout the year, some for the PB4L Leads (Anna and Nigel) and some for the PB4L Team (we will introduce them in the next newsletter). This ensures that we are keeping on track with our goals and making sure the whole team is involved and informing the rest of the staff and the community.

At the end of the last term, we had the Ministry of Education carry out the School-Wide Evaluation. This evaluation aims to determine how accurately PB4L School-Wide is being implemented and was carried out to gain baseline data at Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto. We will provide feedback about our result later in the term.

During a full staff meeting (including support staff), each member completed the EBS (Effective Behaviour Survey) to identify what strategies are ‘in place’ and ‘not in place’ within our school. This is setting us up with the evidence to support positive behaviour in our school and links to our results.

We will be updating the school website with the PB4L Purpose Statement (soon) and some information about what PB4L-SW means at Beckenham.  We will also be sending out information regularly in the school newsletters.

If you have any questions about PB4L, please see Anna or Nigel.

Parking outside the School

When picking up your child from school, please ensure you stay off the painted yellow lines. These are there to ensure drivers and our road patrollers have a clear view of the road. There is a lot of parking on Eastern Tce and on Norwood Street if the drop off zone is busy or alternatively, you might need to make a circle of the block.  Please respect the purpose of these lines especially on wet days to maintain the safety of all our children and their whanau.

REMINDER Teacher Only Day Monday 20th May

School will be closed this coming Monday 20th of May for a Teacher Only Day.  If you need childcare, BOSCO is taking bookings.

Lost Property

We have an ever-increasing amount of lost property at school. When clothes are named, it is very easy to return items to students. We appreciate that purchasing school uniform items can be costly and naming clothing will prevent clothing being lost. Thank you so much for your help with this.

Parent Bookshelf

Many parents often request books to support them at home with parenting.  Historically we have kept these parent support books in the library and now they have been given a new place to live - the parent bookshelf in the school office. There are some incredible titles about reading, Growing Boys into Great Men, Raising Great Girls, dyspraxia, understanding ADHD,  understanding ASD, to name just a few. Feel free to pop into the office to take a look. Books can be issued at any time via a sign in/out book which is found on the shelf.

Possible Strike Action 29th May

New Zealand’s principals and primary teachers have just voted about what to do to get further government action on the current crisis in recruiting and retaining teachers.

We’re agreed – we can’t in good conscience accept the Government’s latest collective agreement offer because it does not begin to address the crisis. We have therefore voted for another course of action, this time involving secondary and primary teachers on May 29th.

Our school will be closed for instruction on Wednesday, May 29th. While we recognise this inconvenience we know this will cause, however, we need to send a clear message to the Government that we are standing strong for our students.

Already children’s education is suffering because of the difficulty in recruiting teachers, having enough support to cater learning differences and giving teachers time to effectively plan lessons, and complete the high administration requirements. We must take bold steps to turn this around.

Through our union, NZEI Te Riu Roa, we are asking for:

Time to teach. More resources and staffing to adequately support children with additional learning needs – this will benefit all children because teachers will be freed to spend more one-on-one time with every student.
A significant increase in teachers’ salaries so that they are properly valued for their qualifications and responsibilities, and as a country, we can recruit and retain teachers.

We appreciate your continued support on this important issue. For more information, please go to http://campaigns.nzei.org.nz/time/ or talk with your child’s teacher.

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

Welcome to term 2. It has been fabulous to see so many smiling faces this week.
As part of our long term whole school focus on Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L), this term we have a whole school focus on encouraging positive relationships including the use of good manners e.g.
  • Saying "please" and "thank you"
  • Listening as others talk
  • Looking people in the eye when we are talking to them or listening
  • Smiling when we greet people
  • Opening a door for an adult and waiting for them to pass through.
Earlier this week I was showing visitors around the school. When we came to the end of our walk around both parents commented on the way three children had opened doors for them and waited as they passed through. Another example of good manners that is beginning to happen more and more is at the school crossing.  It has been so nice to hear both parents and children say "thank you" to the Road Patrollers for the job they do rain, hail and shine.

We appreciate your help in encouraging manners, be it at school, or at home.

What can we all do to encourage the use of good manners?
Manners don’t come naturally to children. They need to be “caught, taught and modelled” (Dianne Levy)
Teaching our children good manners encourages gratitude and respect, add assertiveness, confidence, consideration, courage, courtesy, enthusiasm, generosity, kindness, love, respect and self-discipline – to name a few. The list of what we are teaching goes on and the sooner we start the more automatic the response will be.

When you have time these articles are worth a read

Thank you for all you do as parents to help make our children the best they can possibly be.

An extra and brief newsletter today as it is the end of the term.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our Year 7/8 camp at Wainui this week. The teachers have put weeks of planning into this and I want to acknowledge their huge efforts. Thank you also to all the parents and whānau who supported with baking, fundraising, attending camp and various other activities. I know that a terrific week of learning about stretching personal expectations and limits took place, with learning about the power of persistence, determination and self-belief were key learning outcomes for many. I am sure that there are around 125 extremely tired adults and children this evening, glad to be home again.

We will be closing at 1:45pm on that day and request that you arrange for your children to be collected at 1:45pm, please.

It has been a very busy term, and I would like to thank both staff and whānau for their support and commitment to our children and their learning. I know that staff and children, and hopefully families too, are looking forward to the holidays to recharge and relax.

I am heading away on May 3rd and will be away for 8 weeks. On my return to NZ I will be attending the NZPF conference in Auckland in the last week of Term 2, and look forward to being back on site again in Term 3.

Measles

Increasing tamariki vaccination rates is crucial to containing Canterbury’s measles outbreak.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Ramon Pink says the upcoming school holidays is a great opportunity to ensure vaccinations are up-to-date.

The most effective way to stop the current measles outbreak is to vaccinate those aged 12 months to 28 years who have never received an MMR vaccine.

As well as vaccinating those who have never been immunised, to prevent the transmission of measles, and to protect those most at risk of developing serious complications from measles, a second MMR vaccine is being made available to more people. A second MMR vaccination is available to:
all those aged 12 months–28 years
caregivers of infants aged up to12months
those aged between 29 and 50 who work with children
Dr Pink says if you are travelling these holiday’s please make sure your tamariki are fully vaccinated before departing.

Football Goal Posts in Beckenham Park

The local football club has erected goal posts in Beckenham Park.  We have been contacted by the Club with a plea that these are not treated as climbing frames.  One of them has a net - these cost over $300 to replace - and should not be pulled/bounced off like a trampoline or other similar actions likely to cause damage.
The goals are quite obviously not a piece of play equipment so please do not use them as such.

Huxter Mountain Bike Relay

On Friday 4th April, 22 children from Pōhutukawa and Kauri battled the elements at McLean’s Island in a fantastic display of perseverance and determination. Despite the challenging conditions, there were lots of smiles visible from beneath the mud.

Erik was just telling us just yesterday that rain and mud made for more fun; well, he got his wish! Tino pai to all our riders! Congratulations to Ben Evans who achieved an impressive 6th place in the individual category.

Canterbury Swimming

We had a record number of children qualify for Canterbury Swimming this year. We recognise that these children put in a lot of work into their training outside of school.

Congratulations to:
Zoe Clarke - 6th place Year 6 Freestyle
Charlotte O’Connor - 6th place Year 8 Breaststroke
Thomas Lyall - 5th place Year 7 Backstroke

BOT Update

Trustee Elections are happening in Term 2. Have you considered putting your name forward for election to the Board?

Becoming a Trustee

Trustees
Trustees are active leaders in our schools. They have an important role of supporting strong professional leadership and ensuring effective teaching for all students through informed governance.

Parents/caregivers and people in the wider community can be school trustees. School boards need to represent the diversity of their school communities to ensure a bright future for all our children.

The trustee elections are the opportunity to vote for candidates who will make a positive difference for children’s education. We need more people willing to use their skills and experiences for the benefit of students!

"Board members are entrusted by the community to ensure the success of our schools and a bright future for our children. We need an education system where all children are expected to succeed and one where we all take shared responsibility in ensuring this happens. As a member of a school board, you can make things happen - you can make a difference."

- Lorraine Kerr, NZSTA President

A call for nominations will be happening at the start of Term 2. Please keep an eye out for nomination forms and information.

Principal's Patch

Kia ora e te whānau

Today's rain and cold was a reminder that we are nearly at the end of the summer term, with daylight saving ending this weekend.

Our Year 7&8 team head away to camp at Wainui on Monday morning. We have seen vanloads of food delivered in the past couple of days, and know that they will have an amazing 5 days of learning together in the outdoors.

I will be away for all of Term 2 and Nigel and Sue will be Acting Principal collaboratively in my absence. Paulette Newton will step out of the Year 3/4 hub for the term and act up as Deputy Principal. She will still retain the leadership and oversight of the Year 3/4 Team. Dorinda Hampton will be teaching full-time in Paulette's place.

Congratulations to our intrepid mountain bikers who participated in the Huxter Mountain Bike Challenge today... I haven't caught up with the confirmed results yet, but this picture certainly paints a story of true commitment to the cause!

Mac Evans - Year 6

Mac, you are a conscientious, hard working student. You are an active listener and a loyal friend. You can always be relied upon to be doing the right thing at the right place at the right time. Tino pai!

School Notices

Please remember that you need to dismount from bikes, scooters, and skateboards in the school grounds before, during and after school. This applies to adults, as well as children. These are times when there are many people around, and we have seen some close calls from both children and adults who have nearly taken someone out as they have ridden through.

Mobile Phone Collection

It would be great if you could rummage around in your drawers and toy boxes and bring into the office any unwanted mobile phones you may have.
Phones collected help our school gain valuable rewards and the environment also benefits by keeping our landfills free of mobile phones their array of hazardous toxic substances.

Measles Vaccination update from the CDBH

To help contain Canterbury’s measles outbreak a wider group of people are now eligible to receive a second MMR vaccination.
As well continuing to provide the vaccine to those aged 12 months to 28 years old who have never been vaccinated, Canterbury DHB is extending the availability of a second dose of MMR vaccine to:

  • all those aged 12 months – 28 years
  • caregivers of infants aged up to 12 months
  • those between 29 and 50 who work with children.

Extending the second dose to these groups recognises the importance of stopping the transmission of measles amongst young people.

Please don’t export measles these school holidays. The measles virus is incredibly infectious. If you are travelling these holiday’s please make sure your tamariki are fully vaccinated before departing.  It takes two weeks for a person to be fully immune after a vaccination, so please contact your GP team about vaccination as soon as you can.

More information on the measles can be found at www.cph.co.nz/news-events

So we can capture the attendance numbers, we ask interested attendees to RSVP to  lshelley@nzsta.org.nz
We hope to see you there.

Canterbury Duathlon

Race report by Daniel Smith

On Monday the 25th of March, the Canterbury Duathlon was held at Ruapuna Raceway and I competed for the 2nd time. When we got there we put our bikes into the transition zone and all of our bags into our allocated area and then waited to be marshalled for our races. The starting 2km run was a bit tiring, but surprisingly the 9km bike was the toughest part for me because I was on a mountain bike rather than a road bike, and having a road bike is a huge advantage, so I was passed by a lot of people on the bike. Then there was the last 1km run where your legs feel like jelly, but my training helped me and I managed to run the whole thing and pass a lot of people who just couldn't make it. I really enjoyed the day and it was a great experience. All of the Beckenham students did amazing and it was an awesome time.

Special congratulation to
Petra Cooper - 5th place in Year 5 Girls
James Stoney - 9th place in Year 5 Boys

South Island Mountain Bike Championships

Well done to Winni and Boyd Goldsbury, who represented Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto at the South Island Mountain Bike Championships last weekend. Both children took on the enduro, downhill and cross country events in three days of racing at Mount Hutt bike park. Winni came first in both the enduro and cross country and, was on her way to securing a third first placing in the downhill, when a flat tyre prevented her from finishing the race. Boyd placed really well in his division, ensuring to get in lots of gnarly jumps along the way.

Kiwi Volleyball League

For the past term, three teams from Kauri have been developing their volleyball skills each Wednesday after school with coaches from Volleyball Canterbury. It was fantastic to see many children trying out this super fun sport for the first time and the coaches commented on the children’s perseverance and improvement.
