Kia ora koutou

What an amazing week. We have had rain, mist, sun and wind this week and, at times, all four seasons in one day.  The Cross Country on Tuesday eluded the cool weather front and the children ran in warm, still, autumn sunshine.  It was amazing to see the students persistence, participation and endurance and wonderful to see parents and caregivers cheering them all on.  Thank you for your support and to the parents who helped take the gear in at the end of the afternoon.

Staff Only Day

Friday next week is a staff only day so students do not come to school on Friday. The staff will be engaging in professional development around Structured Literacy, the research and implications for our classroom programmes.

Have a happy weekend.

Parking and driver care on Sandwich Road

We know that everyone is keen to keep our children safe as they travel to and from school. To support this, please can drivers NOT try to undertake U-turns on Sandwich Road during the pick-up and drop-off times. We have witnessed some near misses recently and, ultimately, it is our children who are being put at risk.
Please also remember that the 3 min zone on the school side of Sandwich Road is MAX 3mins - not time enough for you to get out of your car and go into school to drop off or collect your child. If everyone can use this area as a drop-off/pick-up point, then all of the traffic will flow more smoothly.

Staff Only Day

A reminder that our first staff-only day for this term is next Friday, May 21st.
School will be closed for students on this day.

Newsletter Contributions

If you would like to contribute something to the Newsletter - e.g. student achievements outside of school, you can do so by emailing newsletter@beckenham.school.nz

Please include text exactly as you wish it to be shared, and ensure any images sent through are a .jpg format.

Getting Muddy

As winter approaches, Beckenham Park is developing some muddy patches. The children are very good at finding these! If your child tends to come home muddy or has the potential for this, please make sure they have a spare school shirt and pair of pants in their bag.

ESOL

Last week we were very pleased to welcome Charmaine, our new Teacher Aide, to our first ESOL lessons for Term 2. Charmaine is taking over from Pip and Elizabeth.

Students worked on prepositions (under, over, between, across, in front, behind) and made paper helicopters to practice science concepts (flying, floating, falling etc.)

Cross Country

In the lead up to cross country, there were lots of conversations about mindset and embracing challenge in our hubs. It was awesome to see our tamariki putting this into practise on Tuesday at our whole school cross country. They showed up, dug deep and ran their best race. Thank you to the Kauri students who took on a variety of organisational roles that contributed to the smooth running of the event and thank you to all the whānau who marshalled the course.

A huge congratulations to every child who participated.

Year 6 Champions - Jayde Inglis and Archie Arnott

Netball

Year 3/4 netball has started down at Hagley Park on Friday afternoons. Beckenham is lucky enough to have 2 teams this year and they started the season playing against each other.

This was a great way for them to gain confidence and understanding of the game before playing teams from other schools.

Both teams played really well and there were many smiles both on and off the court.

Welcome back. It has been so good to see everyone back this term, and to be amazed at how much some of our children have grown over just the two weeks of the holidays!

A special welcome to all of the new students and families who have joined our school this week. We had 10 New Entrants start this week, with more to come over the term ahead. We love welcoming our new staff, students and their families at our Welcome Assembly each term, and this morning was no exception.

New Building

We can see lots of progress happening on our new classroom block with the roof going on during this week. We are advised that HRS are currently on track to hand over on the agreed date of Thursday 22nd July, ready for the start of Term 3. Alex Scott - Year 4

Alex, you have been a wonderful member of our hub. You always seek to help other people and be a good role model. You are kind and caring, and encourage others to do the right thing. It has been lovely to see you embracing challenges in your learning and showing such great teamwork spirit. Ka mau te wehi, Alex!

Food Allergy Guidelines

Across our school, we have a number of children with different food allergies.
To support the wellbeing of these students we have the following guidelines in place which we ask you to follow:
  • Whenever children bring food to school for shared kai occasions, please follow the guidelines provided by the teachers for that event.
We will inform you during the year if specific guidelines for your child’s hub change.  Our full allergy policy and guidelines in this booklet, are also available on the Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto website under “Information - Policies - SchoolDocs” then search ‘allergy’.  If you have any questions or concerns, please discuss them in the first instance with your child’s point of contact teacher.

School Cross Country

Our whole school cross country is next Tuesday afternoon, May 11th.
We would love to invite whānau to spectate this event.

Senior school races kick off the afternoon with the Year 8s starting shortly after 1:30. We then work down the year groups.
Junior races will not start before 2:15.

The children have been out practising this week and are becoming familiar with the course they will run. We are also having conversations around developing a positive mindset around participation in cross country. Success can look like many different things depending on the individual. We encourage the children to set goals for themselves based on running their own best race. This is something that you might like to discuss at home. Some potential goals could be:
- finishing the course
- maintaining a run for the whole way round
- pacing themselves so that can finish feeling strong

Children can wear their housetop on this day or may race in their red school polo. Wearing shoes that are comfortable to run in will be beneficial.

After their race, the children can see you for a quick celebration of their efforts and then should head back to their team's area to be supervised by a teacher. We would appreciate it if you can support the children in remembering this step.

If you are coming to spectate, please leave dogs at home as some children may be afraid of dogs.

Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto PTA Survey 2021

Hello to all our Beckenham School Families,

Well where on earth did Term 1 go?  We hope you all had a wonderfully relaxing term break with your families and friends and are ready for another term ahead.

Here at Beckenham School, our families and wider community are really quite extraordinary.  Because of this, the PTA are able to do a really good job supporting our school through a variety of events, activities, practical support and fundraising.

In this ever changing world, we are aware that peoples' circumstances change.  For the PTA to best support the school community, we keep up to date details for those wonderful helpers or 'friends of the PTA' so we can reach out to them in time of need, when we need that extra little support.

We have around 350+ families within the school so we ask that if everyone could find a way of giving a little of their time or energy to help, the success and support that the PTA offers to its school and its families would be even more amazing, and shared by so many.  Many hands really do make light work.

Thank you for taking the time to complete the following few questions.
To access the form please click here.

Kind Regards
Jody Smith, Nicola Arnott and the PTA team

The Big Little Theatre Company

There are 2 shows in Christchurch, 1 at the Little Andromeda Theatre on the 22nd of April, and 1 at the Isaac Theatre Royal on the 23rd of April.

So what is the show about you ask?  It’s a  comedy of falsehoods, wit and questionable societal norms, Big Little Theatre Company's reimagining of Oscar Wilde's the Importance of Being Earnest will have you laughing out loud and hungry for a muffin.

Jack is in love with Gwendolen. Algernon is in love with Cecily. Cecily is Jack's ward. Gwendolen is Algernon's cousin. Jack told Gwendolen his name was Earnest. Algernon told Cecily his name was Earnest. Neither Jack nor Algernon are actually called Earnest but of course Gwendolen and Cecily both think their love is called  Earnest. Maddie and Morgan can't find Earnest anywhere on Instagram, someone misplaced a baby and Quin is just happy to be here.

Confused? Good. You’ll just have to come along for a fun filled evening out to make sense of just who Earnest is and why he is so important.

Sports News

Last weekend our Year 7 student Billy Murfin, represented Canterbury in an athletics meet in Dunedin. He was part of a team of athletes selected from all the athletics clubs in Canterbury. They competed against athletes from Otago and Southland in a range of events.

Billy came first in the boys grade 11 100m race, his team also won the 4 x 100 relay.

Canterbury won the overall tournament trophy thanks to an awesome effort from the whole team, which also included the mighty Isla Mitchell (Y4). Ka pai!

Volleyball

Three teams from Kauri participated in weekly volleyball sessions at Hillview Christian school this term. These sessions were run by Canterbury Volleyball and incorporated skill development and competitive games. The children participated with huge enthusiasm and made huge progress in their skill development, especially their serves! A massive thank you to Gail for supporting the children at these sessions each week.

Miniball

Four teams of children from Kōwhai have been participating in a miniball league at Pioneer this term. This group of enthusiastic children have gone from strength to strength in their skill development. Many of them were trying the sport for the first time. Thank you to all the parents who supported the children at the games by managing the team and doing the score board. Another thank you goes to Lola, Cooper, Zoe, Marcellus and Ollie, (students from Kauri) who have been sharing their knowledge and giving their time to coach these teams.
