Hub 5/6 Reading Karate Challenge

This week Paulette and Mike have set up a, Reading Karate Challenge for the children in Hub 5/6 to promote reading. To achieve the various reading belts, your child will need to complete a variety of reading challenges (books).

Each child in the hub has been given their first challenge to achieve the white belt. To receive the white belt, your child will need to read two picture books. This will take two nights to complete as you can only read one book per night. Once your child has read the two picture books, you need to sign that they have done so and they then need to complete the reading response sheet- "My favourite book."
This is in their Home Learning book.
Your child can then show this to either Paulette and Mike and they will sign it off and give your child their first karate belt.

The aim of Reading Karate is for the children to read a variety of books of differing genres, and the home reading (chapter book or school book) is for personal reading and enjoyment. Today the children all took out a chapter book from the school library that will be their nightly reading this week. Your child still needs to read for 10-15mins per night. Please continue to fill in the reading log at the front of their Home Learning book.

The children were really excited about beginning the Reading Karate programme and many have already set the goal to be readying EVERY night! It counts to read on the weekends too!

Happy reading everyone!

Kowhai News Week 2 Term 4

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Wow! What a spectacular first week back we have had. The children quickly settled into their new learning spaces last week and have been very respectful of the new building site and how to keep safe. The main focus for the week was on establishing new routines as our school takes on a new layout. We have been impressed with the way in which the children have all maintained their focus on learning, even when diggers have been dismantling the Intermediate Hub!

We took this as a great learning opportunity for the children to understand how buildings are demolished. The children wrote news articles, poems and recounts along with creating sketches of diggers in action as they witnessed the demolition team sorting the materials into rubbish and recycling, We connected this to the waste that we produce here at school. Many of the children made the comment that they would like to reduce the amount of rubbish they create by not bringing as much plastic wrapped food to school each day. We would like to promote this as a way forward and we encourage you all to consider ways that you can make your child's lunchbox as litter free as possible.

Hub 5/6 came up with these ways in which to to do this:
* Putting items into re-usable plastic containers
* Purchasing larger bags of crisps and putting crisps into usable containers
* Using paper bags instead of plastic bags
* Unwrapping items BEFORE putting them in lunch boxes
* Making your own homemade baking

Water Bottles and Hats
As mentioned in our last newsletter at the beginning of the term, all children need to bring in a NAMED drink bottle and wide brimmed sunhat each day. If you need to purchase a new sunhat, see Jacky at the school office as she has a ready supply for purchase. We are encouraging the children to all drink at least one water bottle each day to assist them with maintaining appropriate hydrations. This will assist the children to have increased focus on their learning. Your help with this is hugely appreciated!

Inquiry- Adaptations
This term we are investigating the concept of adaptability. During this scheme of work, the children will learn about the different biomes around the world. They will learn how animals adapt to their changing environment and the consequences for either not adapting or not adapting fast enough. We will be linking this to how we need to adapt to changing environments and what skills and mindsets we need in order to be successful. This week the children are learning about the different biomes with all the teachers in the Kowhai Team rotating around the classes, teaching a specific biome.

Celebrating Success
This term, we are having a particular focus on 'We Love Learning' and 'We Get There Together' by encouraging the children to take more responsibility for their learning. Across the team we are providing the children with greater agency. This means the children are encouraged to make decisions about their learning and their next steps. At the Year 3-4 level, this is highly supported and monitored by the teaching staff to ensure the children understand how to make appropriate choices about their learning.
Being an effective self-manager (being able to work anywhere, with anyone),  striving to do your personal best, managing time, understanding tasks, having a growth mindset (being a positive and solutions based thinker) and setting and achieving personal goals are some of the key skills we will be teaching and promoting.

Each week at our team hui, we will celebrate individuals who are demonstrating these skills. On Fridays, these children will bake pizzas for their lunch (they just need to bring their own pizza toppings). Here are our first celebration certificates for the term. Well done everyone!

Calendar Art
Last week we sent home order forms to enable you to purchase calendar art. The artwork is currently on display in the school office. Do take time to have a look as, across the team, we have produced some SPECTACULAR artworks which would make wonderful Christmas presents. If you have lost or misplaced your order form, don't fret! Jacky has spares at the school office.

Playhouse Theatre Company
Today we were treated to a visiting performance from the NZ Playhouse. They presented a play to help teach the importance of cyber safety. The key learning points of the play were:
1. Keep your passwords safe and don't tell anyone your personal details
2. Only say things online that you would say to a person face to face

The children had a fantastic time watching this highly entertaining and energetic play.

Art Donations
We would love some donations of newspaper for Hubs 5/6 and Hub 7 to enable the children to make their paper mache sculptures. Please send any newspaper with your child to school and we will sort it out at our end.
Hub 5/6 would also love the donation of any old picture frames that they can use for the mounting of their art works.

Term 4 Notices

Hi everyone,

We hope you have all had a great break despite the weather! Let's hope the temperature picks up as the term progresses. Here are just a couple of reminders for the start of the term as there are some changes due to the building starting.

Building at Beckenham: Over the holidays, Rooms 5,6,7,14 and 15 were relocated to Hornby High School so our school site looks remarkably different from the end of the term.  Where the buildings once stood, there are fences to protect the children and to prepare for the new build site. On Monday, we will be taking the children on a safety tour around the school to show the areas that the children are to move around the school to enable them to keep safe. The fencing that is up will ensure that the children stay well clear and safe while the buildings are in construction. We know the children will be really interested in watching the building as it progresses and keeping them safe is our number one priority.

Classroom/ Learning Spaces: Just a wee reminder of our new learning spaces for the term. Hub 8/9 are now in the old Room 21 and 22 block. Hub 7 is in the old Room 19 Library and Hub 5/6 are now in the old staffroom.  All our new learning spaces have retained our original Kowhai Hub names. Please note: Over the holidays new bag hooks were put up outside Hub 5/6 for the children to put their bags on Monday.

Adaptability: Our inquiry this term is investigating the concept of adaptability. Over the next couple of weeks the children will be learning about animal habitats and how animals adapt to their environment. We will be making connections with how we need to be adaptable in our changing school environment.

Hats: A reminder that during Term 4 all children need to wear a hat whenever they are outside. Please have a hunt over the weekend for your child's hat and if you need to purchase a new one, Jacky can help you out at the school office.

Water: As the weather heats up and with limited water fountains outside, we need all children to have a water bottle at school every day. Hydration helps with focus and increases our ability to think. Please make sure your child has a drink bottle at school on Monday.

Parent Help: We would still love the willing help of parents to assist us with our class programmes. We would be interested to hear from anyone that would like to take a small group of children to Thorrington Resthome every Friday from, 11am-12pm.

Newspaper: We would love some donations of newspaper for our team as we embark on a sculpture unit for art. Any donations can be given to your Hub teachers.

Well that's all for now. Have a wonderful weekend ahead.

Kowhai Newsletter 23rd September

Hi everyone,

Wow! What a busy last week we have had in preparation for our BIG move. Everything went extremely smoothly and we are all happily settled into our new learning spaces. Our teaching teams worked exceptionally hard yesterday to ensure the new learning spaces were set up for the children on Friday. Although we have moved location, we will remain being called Hub 5/6 (old staffroom), Hub 7 ( Room 19- Library) and Hub 8/9 ( Rooms 21/22).

Parent Help

We would really love the assistance of more parents to help us in Term 4. Your continued support with our class programmes is highly appreciated. We understand that many of you are busy, however, any time would be greatly accepted. Please contact your Hub teacher(s) to let them know if you are able to help. We would love any interested parents who would like to take a small group of children to Thorrington Resthome each week and another parent who would be keen on baking pizzas with a group of children each week.
Thank you - A huge thank you goes out to all the amazing parents who have offered to help in our team this term. We appreciate your support with our programmes and trips.

Performance
We were thrilled to see such an incredible turn out at our Kowhai  Team Dance Extravaganza last week. The children loved sharing and performing for you and we were inundated with many positive comments from you all. Don Ferguson has kindly offered to put a performance video together. We will send out a link when it is ready.

School Books
If your child has any school reading books or library books at home, can you please put them in a safe place over the holidays. We would love the return of any reading books and Anne would dearly love the return of all the library books. Library sessions will return to normal next term.

Neighbourhood Support
Congratulations goes out to Mia Aramowicz and Ben Newton who received awards at our school Celebration Assembly yesterday. They both demonstrated being honest when finding wallets in the park and handing them in so they could be return to the correct owner. We love how they are living our school values of 'We Care', "We Make a Difference' and 'We Get There Together'.

Have a safe and restful break and we look forward to seeing you all in Term 4.

Olympic Performance Tonight

We are really excited to be sharing our Olympic learning with you tonight at the Kowhai Team's Celebration of Learning.

The children need to be in their home rooms from 5.30pm- 5.45pm to enable them to have time to get ready for the show. This will also provide you time to get a premium seat in the hall. As BOSCO is using the hall foyer, entry to the hall will be via the hall doors on the Junior side of the hall. We will have programmes for you to read prior to the performance to help you understand the meaning behind each of the dances. Please remember to bring along a gold coin donation for each person attending the performance. We are aiming to start at 6pm sharp and the performance is approximately 50 minutes.

The feedback we have had so far have included:
"The dancing and music was awesome. It was so entertaining!" Isla Year 7
"Was I just dreaming? That was so good!" Dartanyan Year 1
"I was astonishd at how professional the dancing and costumes were. It was simply incredible." Oskar Year 8
