Cricket
Next week (Tuesday September 1st), the Christchurch Metro Cricket Association will be sending coaches out to Beckenham School to run 30 minute coaching sessions with our hubs. This will be a fantastic way of learning some cricket skills from the professionals.  These sessions will run outdoors if the weather is fine, and indoors if the weather is wet.  We look forward to their visit and hope the weather is nice!
Please remember to send your child along to school with appropriate sport shoes and clothing.

Gymnastics
A reminder to all families that gymnastics is now finished.  The children have thoroughly enjoyed these activities and we have noticed budding gymnasts practicing their moves in the playground!  Thank you to all the parents/caregivers for your support, and for ensuring that your children came to school wearing appropriate footwear/clothing.

New learning topic
Next week is week 7, time is flying by!  Our learning will be moving on, and the next topic we will focus on will be MLE’s.
As you will be aware Beckenham School’s classrooms will soon transform and transition into a MLE (Modern Learning Environment).  Therefore, our focus with the children will be to develop their understandings around the internal and external spaces in which they will be learning.  We will do this by encouraging the children to work collaboratively as we think about our future learning spaces.

Learning Conferences
A big thank you to all those parents/caregivers that attended their child’s learning conference this week.  It was a valuable way to share learning progress with you, and it was encouraging to see so many families attend.  If you haven’t organised a Learning Conference yet, please contact your teacher and we can make a time to meet before or after school to do this.

Learning Conferences

The children are excited about sharing their learning progress with you at learning conference time. A reminder these will be held in your child's class from 2pm on Tuesday 25th August and Thursday 27th August. School will be finishing at 2pm both days.
To book your conference(s), go to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and enter the code; SVCSR There will be supervision available in the hall for children who can’t be collected until 3pm. Please contact Jacky in the office if you would like your child supervised during this time on either day.

Next week we have altered our learning programme to prepare the children for their learning conferences. Routines are slighlty different so this may reflect some changes in home learning next week also.

Sickness

There has been an incredible amount of colds, and viruses going around. This means we have many of the children away sick. Please if your child is not well, try to keep them at home as some of the bugs going around are taking a number of days for the children to get over. We are encouraging hand sanitiser and hand washing. We hope EVERYONE will be well again soon.

Calendar Art Journey

Our calendar art is making fantastic progress. The children are working hard and persisting to get a wonderful end result. We can’t wait until they are finished. Please see our write up in the Beckenham School newsletter for more information.

Parent Help

We would love some more parent help with our print making.  We really appreciate all the parent help we have been receiving it is great having you in the classroom.

Spellathon

The children did a wonderful job with their spellathon. Please, if your child hasn't brought their spelling card back yet, bring it in on Monday so we can get testing. Please bring the sponsorship and cards back as soon as possible as the first class to have them all back gets rewarded with morning tea.

Christchurch City Library Visit
We had a visit from the Christchurch City Library Outreach representative this afternoon and he read us a selection of favourites from the library. What a fun afternoon activity!

Learning Conferences
We have learning conferences coming up on Tuesday 25th and Thursday 27th August. These learning conferences are for your child to share their learning goals and progress. Booking details will be coming out soon. If you need to discuss anything extra with your child's teacher please book a separate time to do this.

Reading
As the children are preparing to lead their learning conferences throughout next week, they will be focussing on books they have had recently or plays. Our reading sessions will return to normal the following week.

Printmaking
We are creating some amazing print templates for printmaking. We will be sharing where we are up to in our process at learning conferences. Here is the planning taking place...

Gymnastics
Our final gymnastics session is in Week 6 (Monday 24th August). Thank you for ensuring your child is wearing the correct clothing.

Clothing
Please name all clothing clearly. Throughout each day we are returning clothing to children and this makes it a lot easier to find the owner.

Supplies
A huge thank you for the extra plastic bags, newspaper, pencils and glue sticks that have been coming in!

Spellathon
Please return spellathon cards to your child's teacher next Monday 17th August as testing will be happening on Friday 21st August. It is a good idea to note down your child's words so they can continue to practise throughout the week.

Printmaking

We have started our printmaking and have been designing a symbol or picture that represents ourselves and/or what we like. We have now got to the stage where we are creating the cardboard templates which we will use to make our prints with. Here are some photos of the process so far:

Coming up with some different design options:

Choosing one design and making a simple, larger version of it:

Creating the cardboard templates and trying them out by making some crayon rubbings:

Next week will get stuck into the actual printing. How exciting!

Gymnastics

Gymnastics is still happening every Monday although our time slot has changed to the beginning of the afternoon instead of the end. Please remember to send your children to school in appropriate clothing for gymnastics. If your child is wearing socks or tights, there will be time given for him/her to remove them before we start.

Supplies

We are running short of glue sticks and pencils and would be extremely grateful if you could each bring in 1 more big glue stick and 2 pencils so we can last until the end of the year. Also, if you have any spare plastic shopping bags and old newspaper, we would love to stock up on these too. Thank you so much.

Parent Help

We would love to have your help in the hub if you are able to come along and join us. Please let a teacher know what time suits you. Thanks!
