Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

You may recall that last week I shared that our children had written cards and letters to be sent to the children at Kaikoura Primary School. I had a call this week from Nigel Easson, the principal, expressing his thanks to our community for this support. He said that the letters and cards had been spread around the tables at school and, when the children and their parents and grandparents had arrived at school this Wednesday, there had been lots of reading, tears, laughing and appreciation as the letters were read and reread. For those of you who didn't catch the segment on TVNZ One News on Wednesday evening, we have managed to capture it below for you to view.

Mandarin learning continues

Our Kahikatea team have been enjoying working with Felicia from the Confucius Institute, having an introduction to Mandarin.
The teachers were asked to nominate 5 children for excellence awards which were given out at a special ceremony in mid November.

We are grateful to Felicia who has offered to continue working with two small extension groups of Year 1/2 students on Friday afternoons to the end of the term.

Pohutukawa Camp at Living Springs

Last week the Pohutukawa Whanau spent three days and two nights at Living Springs. Over the three days we experienced three very different seasons but this did not slow us down one bit. The children (and adults!) had a fantastic time on the first day; orienteering around the site, going on the monorail, bouncing on the tramps, racing around the track on the balance bikes, and taking a refreshing dip in the pool. To add to all the excitement, two of our children, Declan and Ruby, were also celebrating their birthdays on this day!

On the second day we enjoyed walking up to Don’s Shed to complete Initiatives, a series of team building exercises that challenged the children both mentally and physically. We also walked down to the outdoor camping area and played Animal Survival, a very complex game that has elements of both tag and a treasure hunt. One of the highlights of this game was watching the adults join in, especially Katie as the huntress! During the night we had an epic dance party where our jump jammers took the stage and motivated all the children to get their groove on.

On the third day we packed up all our gear and headed down to the farm. There we were split into two groups. In the first group we went on a tractor ride around the farm and learned how to communicate with horses and ride them. In the second group we learned about cows and how to milk them. After a sausage sizzle lunch and feeding the animals we all hopped back on the bus and headed back to Beckenham to reunite with our loved ones.

It was a fantastic trip where all the children did our school proud by demonstrating our school values ‘We get there together’. A huge thank you to all the parents who supported us on camp and an even bigger thank you to Nick Bruce who organised and led the camp. We are now counting down the days to our next camp in 2018!

News Update – Monday 14 November 2016

News Update

Kia ora whānau

Firstly I would like to acknowledge the amazing staff we have, for their outstanding efforts today. We were all operating on significantly reduced sleep, some much more so than others. Our goal for today was to have the children have as normal a day as possible and we did achieve this, as much as we possibly could.

We had 300 out of our 465 children attend school today.

Communication:

We did send out text messages to all caregivers this morning, about the status of the school. If you didn't receive a text, please ensure that you contact Jacky in the office as soon as possible and check that we have current details for you.
Saying that, we are also aware that only around 80% of our text messages reached their destination this morning - the other 20% didn't get delivered which was frustrating. We discovered that we had similar issues with incoming texts also, when we started phoning parents of children whom we hadn't heard from and you were telling us you had sent a text!

Champion St:

We do have protocols for dealing with an emergency situation at Champion St. We have an emergency services quality radio with its own private channel to communicate between Champion St and Beckenham which we will be able to use in the event that the telephone and/or cell phone networks are down.
If we need to evacuate from Champion St, our plan will be to use buses to bring all the children back to Beckenham. Red Bus have assured us that children and schools are their first priority in an emergency. With this in mind, we would ask that you plan to meet all of your children, following an emergency, at Beckenham School, rather than have individual parents trying to get to Champion St. If this plan were to change, we would let the school office know to alert you.

Moving Forward

We do encourage you to have your children return to school tomorrow, if they were away due to the earthquake this morning, so that school can support you and them to have a strong sense of routine and normality.

There is a very useful site that you may want to explore, called 'The Worry Bug' which has a range of resources for parents and schools to use, to help understand and support anxious children.

These 7 tips for supporting children with anxiety come from their website and may be particularly useful over the next few days:
  1. It’s important to retain routines; get up at the same time, go to bed at the same time, keep mealtimes, school routines, after school activities the same.
  2. Turn media off, repetition of disturbing scenes adds to anxiety.
  3. Provide a calm and loving response; keep your adult worries away from children. If you are particularly upset: don’t talk about it with your children, get support from other adults you trust.
  4. Keep normal disciplinary boundaries. If kids are pushing these, it is important that they know their parents are still in charge - the world is unpredictable enough without these changing.
  5. Give reassurance but don’t overdo it. Too much reassurance means there is something to be worried about!
  6. Creating narratives to explain what happened can be useful for younger children.
  7. Let them talk about it, but don’t let it take over, use play to get their minds off it. Do the things that you and your children enjoy – distraction is a wonderful thing!
If you have any questions or concerns about how the school will support your child in an emergency, please don't hesitate to contact me or the office, and we will assist you in whatever way we can.

Post Earthquake update…

Post-Earthquake update

Beckenham School is open as usual today. We have had an engineer check our Beckenham site and the Champion site is also being checked. Everything is as it should be. Buses are operating to Champion St as normal.

We do understand that normality and routine for children and families is important and our goal is to provide this.

We also recognise that some of you may want to keep children at home today.

We will be assessing the numbers of children that we have at school today and may end up joining some classes together so that we can send some of our staff home. We have staff who have evacuated from their homes and/or taken in evacuees, and have had very little sleep as a result.

Our goal today is to provide as much normality, in a low-key way.

Our thoughts are with those who have experienced any loss or damage.

Staffing Update

We are at the stage of the year where we have managed to successfully complete our full-time teacher appointments for 2017 and are able to share these with you.
We have some changes in our teaching teams, as a result of staff taking leave and resignations. We look to ensure that we have a range of skills and expertise spread across the teams to provide a strong and balanced team in each area of the school.
This year, we have had two permanent staff members on leave.
Megan Harris took the year off to spend time with her family in Dunedin. Sadly for us, Megan has now decided that her heart lies in Dunedin and that she will continue to live there for the foreseeable future. We wish her all the very best in that journey.
April Chapman left us during the year to become a mother to her beautiful daughter, Alexandria. It’s no surprise that April is loving being a full-time mum and we are pleased for her that she has found a position that will suit her new family commitments, teaching music one day a week at Halswell Primary School. We wish her all the very best with that new career change.
At the end of last year, we encouraged Rowena Barker to take on the Acting Team Leader of the New Entrant Team for this year. Rowena has been a fabulous Team Leader, and has reminded us that she was just filling in for the year, never intending to continue with that role beyond this time. We are grateful for the leadership that she has provided.
Susan Walsh has decided that she would like to relinquish her leadership roles at the end of this year, and focus her energy into classroom teaching. We are very grateful for the leadership she has provided and we are pleased to be able to retain her skills and expertise.
Tracy Inwood has requested, and been granted, a year’s leave for 2017. Tracy and her husband Phil plan to visit family in the UK for a time during 2017. We are likely to still see her around school, in a part-time and/or relieving capacity in 2017.
Amanda McLean will be taking maternity leave for 2017 and we wish her all the very best with becoming a mother for the first time.
We say farewell at the end of the year to Jo Smith, who has been taking our most recent New Entrant class in Hub 13. Jo’s experience, calmness and caring has been the perfect fit for our newest children and their families.

New appointments:

We have been very lucky to attract a new senior teacher to our teaching staff and Leadership Team. Sue Leadbetter will be joining our staff in 2017, moving with her family from Oakura School in New Plymouth. Sue is a Cantabrian who has previously been Deputy Principal at St Martins School and we look forward to welcoming her back to Christchurch.
Gayle McNaughton and Jenny Diggle have both been reappointed to our teaching staff and we are delighted to retain their skills and expertise.

So… working through all of the above, we have put the following teaching teams together, and we are confident that we have all the right people in the right places for 2017!

New Entrant, Year 1 & Year 2 (will be one team in 2017 instead of two)

  • Sue Leadbetter (Team Leader)
  • Rowena Barker
  • Amber Donovan (and Dorinda Hampton - part-time)
  • Caitlyn Downing
  • Gail Hulme
  • Charlotte Verity

Year 3/4 Team

  • Paulette Newton (Team Leader)
  • Mike Matulewicz
  • Anna Reid
  • Rebekah Stoop
  • Susan Walsh

Year 5/6 Team

  • Amy Buick (Team Leader)
  • Nick Bruce
  • Katy Chapman
  • Gayle McNaughton

Year 7/8 Team

  • Nicky Dunlop (Team Leader)
  • Jenny Diggle
  • Jarred Skelton

I hope you all have a safe and relaxing Show Weekend.

Citizen of the Week

Name - Oliver McLachlan Year 2

Oliver, it has been amazing to watch you grow this year as a confident, caring and enthusiastic member of our Hub. You have enjoyed learning about growth mindsets and have applied ideas around perseverance, problem solving and empathy into daily life at school. You thrive with responsibility and take pride in being a positive role model to others. Your fantastic attitude towards learning has enabled you to come on in leaps and bounds in many learning areas. We are so proud of all your efforts and contributions Oliver. Tino Pai!

Sharing our Learning

Kowhai Team

Inquiry and writing

Kowhai team  have been learning all about different habitats. We are investigating where animals live, and how different animals are suited to their habitat. We are exploring what would happen if animals had to swap habitats. Could they survive? What adaptations would they have to make? We can't wait  to create our own diorama of a habitat to showcase our learning.
We have been investigating the characteristics of various animals that enable them to live in a particular habitat. We have applied this knowledge to invent a new animal and have identified the key attributes they need to survive in a particular habitat. This coming week, we will be exploring how changes to an environment can impact on animals and what they need to do to adapt to these changes in order to survive.

Fennec Fox

The Fennec fox who is sometimes referred as the desert fox, is the smallest in the entire world. They can grow from 6-15 inches long. They weigh 2 kilograms. They are the only fox you can have as a pet.
Fennec foxes are nocturnal (they hunt at night). They have very soft fur and big ears that help them hear their predators. The Fennec fox is not endangered.  Fennec foxes live in deserts and grassland like the Sahara desert and the Savannah grassland.
Fennec foxes eat plants, reptile eggs, and birds. They can cope without having water. The Fennec fox has sharp claws which help them dig their burrows. Their ears are so sensitive that they can hear insects such as beetles and locusts walking on the sand and also locate underground prey.
So after all that, I hope you have learnt a lot about the Fennec fox. I love Fennec foxes!

Snow leopards

Snow leopards are a member of the wild cat and panther families.
They are a warm blooded large cat. Snow leopards have grey and white fur, rosettes on the flanks, spots on the head and neck, they also have long tails.
Snow leopards are found at altitudes between 9,800 and 17,000 feet high in the rugged mountains of central Asia.
In captivity, female snow leopards most often bear 2 or 3 cubs in a litter, though there can be more.
Snow leopards eat almost anything they can catch, often hunting animals three times their size. They prey upon blue sheep of Tibet and the Himalayas.
Snow leopards don’t have any predators at all, they are at the top of the food chain.
Snow leopards weigh 77-120 lbs [ 35-55 kg,] their height is 2 feet. Their tail length is 1m. Female snow leopards are about 30% smaller than males.

M.A.D (Make A Difference) Time

This term the children have been given the options of:
Photography - Learning how to use the ipad to take photos, how to take a variety of photos, editing and creating photo frames.
Stop Motion Animation - Learning how to make an animated story using lego.

Drama - Learning drama  skills and applying these to create a short performance.
Thorrington Rest Home - Visiting our local rest home to make connections with the elderly residents. The children read stories, chat and sing them songs.
Sewing - The children are learning a variety of sewing skills as they create a monster pillow.
Christmas Crafts and Cards - We are lucky enough to have the assistance of Nicola Arnott who is teaching the children how to make various Christmas crafts and cards.

Athletics

We are enjoying getting out into the sun and training for our Junior school athletics day later on the term. We have been working on high jump, relay running, shot putt, discus and long jump.

Papier mâché animals

The Hub 7 children have been enjoying learning about different habitats and adaptations that animals have to make in order to live in their environments. For our visual art unit this term we have been constructing papier mâché rainforest animals.  The children have been working hard and showing a lot of attention to detail and persistence when making the animals' bodies out of sculpted wire, and newspaper.  We have diligently added layers of newspaper to the rattle snakes, butterflies, tigers, chameleons and a variety of insects. Our next steps are to paint and decorate the rainforest animals to make them look as life-like as possible.  We hope to display these for all to see.

Thank You!
We would like to extend a big thank you to 2 organisations who have supported Beckenham with some recent donations. Firstly, Mitre 10 Hornby for donating 15 bird house kits for our Kowhai team to make during their ‘Make a Difference’ time. Also, a big thank you to Carpet Kingdom who donated some carpet for our library when it was relocated to the dental clinic.

Parking is an issue on Eastern Tce...vehicles are parking where the buses are supposed to be and also on the other side of the road making it very narrow. Please take some time to check the signs on Eastern Tce and ensure that you are not parked there during bus times. This helps to keep traffic flowing, and to keep our children safe.

Important Update for the beginning of Term 4, 2016

Important Update for the beginning of Term 4, 2016

Kia ora koutou

As you will be aware, we are now officially building and all of the planning and organisation that has been going on is now a reality.

The safety and wellbeing of everyone is our priority for tomorrow, over everything else. If we can have a clear understanding of plans and expectations for moving safely around both sites, and for the bussing back and forth to Champion St, we will set the term up for safety and success.

This is a lengthy email as there is a lot of very important information that we need you to have. Please do read it carefully.

Getting in and out of the Beckenham site

Below is a map of the school, showing access points into the school (Beckenham flags) and access routes around the school (in green).

We will have the four new school flags flying at the four access points to the school tomorrow morning. These points are:

Sandwich Road - the main entrance at the crossing/flagpole
Sandwich Road - at the Dental Clinic
Eastern Tce - via the driveway by Hub8/9 (old R21/22)
Norwood St Park entrance (or any entrance via park) - through into the junior playground or behind Hub 8/9

Fences and Building Site

The fences that are up today (Sunday) are not quite what will be up once the building gets going. We are expecting the demolition of the old Intermediate Hub to happen one day this coming week, and then the 'normal' fencing and access routes will be in place at that time. In the interim, we will be working closely with the Site Manager to ensure that safety and access are prioritised.

Moving around the Beckenham site

Yes - this is going to take a little bit of getting used to as routes are very specific and have changed since last term.
Hub 1/2/3/4 and Hub 10/11 students should have no major changes.
Hub 12/13 children will need to access their rooms through the staff car park fenced off access path.
For Hub 8/9 and Hub 7, the best access in the morning and afternoon (if you are coming in the main Sandwich Road entrance) will be to go through the junior playground, onto the park and then down to your classrooms.

It is very important to remember that none of us have ANY permission to cross fences into the building site - we should consider that this is NO LONGER part of our school. We have no authority over the building site areas - they are now the responsibility of HRS, as is the Health and Safety of anyone who is inside the fenced area.
There will be an Assembly at 9:30am on Monday morning for EVERYONE at the Beckenham Site, to talk about Health and Safety and access around our site. Following this, teachers will be walking their classes around the site and reminding them where they are/are not allowed to go, and which routes they need to take to get there.

Y5-8 students at Beckenham site

In the mornings we need the Y5-8 students to access the buses on Eastern Tce by staying out of the school site, except for those children who come in the Norwood St park entrance, who will then go across to Hub 8/9 (old 21/22), around the back new path and down the driveway to the buses.
Children who arrive at school via Sandwich Rd will be asked to stay on the footpath and walk down to Eastern Tce that way.
The same will apply in the afternoons when Y5-8 students disembark their buses. If they need to go to BOSCO, they should go onto the park, then in to BOSCO via the entrance by the junior playground. If they need to meet a sibling, they should either go through the park to the Junior playground, or around the road, up Sandwich Road and meet them at the flagpole or bike area.
Y5-8 students who bike or scooter to school need to lock their bikes/scooters in the bike stand area, then walk back out onto Sandwich Road and around to the bus on Eastern Tce, and use the same route in the afternoon.

Morning tea and Lunchtime at Beckenham

To ensure safety of all of the children we are planning to keep all the children in two spaces at break times - the park (for Year 3/4 only), and the junior playground for all children. There will be teachers on duty during morning tea and lunchtime in both those spaces.

BOSCO

We are not certain that the access to the new BOSCO rooms (the old Room 8/9) will be ready by 7am tomorrow, so please take your morning BOSCO children to the Hall (via the junior playground doors). If their rooms are accessible, staff will escort them over. If not, they will meet in the hall for the morning session.
At 3pm BOSCO staff will collect children from Hubs 10,11,12 & 13, and will meet Y1-4 children BOSCO children outside Hub 1-4 and escorting them to the BOSCO rooms. We expect the access to BOSCO to be ready for the afternoon session.
Please do not park in the staff car park when dropping or collecting children from BOSCO.

Assembly this Thursday

For logistical reasons, we have changed the time of Assemblies to be on Thursday afternoons. Children from Champion St will bus over earlier and come in directly to assembly and children at the Beckenham site will pack up before coming over to assembly, so that they are ready to pick up their bags when assembly ends at 3pm, and go home. This coming Thursday we will start with our traditional Welcome Assembly (2:15pm) and this will be immediately followed by our normal Celebration Assembly which will be led by the Kauri (Y7/8) team.
Prior to the assembly, the PTA are holding a Welcome afternoon tea in the hall foyer at 1:30pm - new families are particularly encouraged to attend.

Emergency Evacuations

We will have a trial evacuation at both sites on Monday 17th October.

Contacting Champion St

The phone number for Champion St is an extension of the phones at Beckenham. That means that you still call the Beckenham number 337 1404 and ask to be put through to someone at Champion St. Teachers' email addresses have not changed.

Buses to Champion St

A reminder that these will be leaving at 8:30am sharp. We expect the buses to be arriving at 8:15am, so students need to check in with one of the teachers on duty, then get onto their appropriate bus, checking in with their particular bus monitor as they get on. (They should get to know this drill pretty quickly).

Vehicles at Champion St

During school time, no vehicles should come onto the school site. A small number of vehicles will be able to park in the driveway and the rest will need to park on the OPPOSITE side of Champion Street to the school entrance (to leave the school side for the afternoon buses.)

Parent Drop-Off/Pick-up at Champion St

If you are dropping your child off, or picking them up early at Champion St, the same digital sign-in/out process applies at the Champion St reception area. Please ensure that this is always followed.

Ferndale Taxi bus

The Ferndale taxi bus will be parking on Sandwich Road, near the dental clinic and students will enter and exit the site via the Dental Clinic steps. Tony Lee will be putting cones out for the van each day so please ensure that you do not park in this spot - Thank you.

Traffic and Parking at Beckenham

As you will see on the access plan, the staff car park has become a primary access route for students and staff, and now only has 5 staff parks remaining in it. Please DO NOT walk through the staff car park at any time as this creates significant risk for children who will copy this behaviour.
Staff have been asked to park on the south side of Sandwich Road, leaving the north (school) side of Sandwich Road available for parents to drop off children. WE STRONGLY URGE those of you who can, to walk to school or to plan your journey earlier and park in adjacent streets including Birdwood Ave and Martin Ave. If you are using Sandwich Road, we would encourage you to pull up - kiss goodbye, drop off - and drive away, so that we can minimise the traffic build up.
Please note that parking on Eastern Tce (from Sandwich Road to the Ponds) will be restricted to buses only on the school side, and there are NO PARKING signs on the river side. It is critical that these restrictions are followed, to ensure that children are not crossing between cars and buses, and to allow for safe movement of traffic on Eastern Tce when the buses are there.

Tomorrow morning, Michelle Maule will be on Eastern Tce helping with the Champion St buses, Cath Barrie will be on Sandwich Rd at the flagpole entrance assisting foot traffic and I will be on the park access point. Our job is to check that all of the access points are working for everyone, and to help anyone who might be unsure about where to go.

Finally I would like to acknowledge the very hard work of staff, the Board of Trustees, and our Project Team, both at the end of last term and, for many, during the holidays, preparing at both sites to ensure that this coming term goes smoothly.

Thank you for reading to the end of this important newsletter!

We are VERY excited about the fact that the builders are on site and our building programme is underway and we want to ensure that they can get on with their jobs, and we can get on with learning, each without interruption.
Your help and support through this period is very much appreciated. If you have any questions, please email me in the first instance and I will do my best to get back to you as soon as possible.
