Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto Newsletter Thursday 11 November 2021

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

With this week just gone having being a short week, I postponed the newsletter completion to Saturday when the weather was forecast to be less pleasant and hence find myself now looking out the window at the wet and grey day outside. I hope that many of you managed to enjoy the stunning day yesterday. I tried my hand at surfcasting out at Birdlings Flat - with no success, but enjoyed lots of sun and relaxation in trying!

Progress and Achievement updates - Reports via HERO

As we have previously noted, our move to HERO was to also provide a new, online portal for the ongoing reporting to whānau on your child's progress and achievement. We expect to open this portal to you this coming Friday, 19th November. During the week ahead, we will provide specific information on how to access and read the information in the portal. It will help if you have viewed the report information before you come to Learning Conferences the following week.

In the meantime, if you haven't yet logged onto HERO, please try and do that before Friday 19th.
For information on how to download the app, click here.
For more detailed information on how to log into HERO - click here.

When you log into the app, you will need to select "NEW USER" and use the email address that you have provided to us that we use to email newsletters etc to you for. If we do not hold an email address for you, you will not be able to log into HERO.

If you would like someone to call you to talk you through the process, please email Reihana - reihana.dougherty@beckenham.school.nz

Learning Conferences

Learning Conferences will be happening the week after next, on Tuesday 23rd November and Thursday 25th November. School will finish at 2pm on both days to facilitate these.

Please log onto www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and use the code wwwsx to book your learning conference with your child's home group teacher.

COVID-19 Vaccination Mandate - update

As I have mentioned in a previous newsletter, the government has mandated that all adults who work and or volunteer to provide any services in schools throughout New Zealand are now required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. We have been working to support our staff and other support providers to ensure that we can meet the requirements of this mandate. The mandate comes into effect at 11:59pm on Monday 15th November. Our Board of Trustees can assure our community that we are ready to be fully compliant with the requirements of this mandate.
These requirements also apply to members of our community who come on site to support our students, including whānau who help with playground duty, trips and learning within the school. Thank you to everyone who has already provided us with the information we requested.
We get there together - to ensure the safest learning environment for our tamariki.

Theatre Sports

Congratulations to our 2 Theatre Sports team who competed on Saturday in The Court Theatre annual competition. They were stars and displayed our school values to a tee! They were up against some tough competition (Year 9's and 10's), but this didn't stop them from 'improv-ing' their hearts out! Well done to: JJ Mathias, Connor Colquhoun, Fergus Macmillan, Emma Reedy, Lachy Mcleod, Zoe Winsor, Luisa Jose, Katya Atlas, Rory Price, Syesha Mee and Oliver Mclachlan.

ESOL over the past few weeks...

Sunflowers have been the theme for our students. They have planted seeds and we are discussing and awaiting germination!

The students learned about the life-cycle of the sunflower plant and associated vocabulary.

Mana Ake Drop Ins

A number of whānau have already made great use of the Mana Ake “drop-ins”. Sessions are now on Tuesdays from 9:30 - 10:30 for parents, starting on November 2nd. These drop-in sessions are here to provide parents with an opportunity to have a private, informal conversation around the well being of their child with one of our Mana Ake workers (kaimahi). If you feel like you would like to attend a drop-in session, please book in a time via the link here: Mana Ake booking  The code to use is yj2ed. Alternatively, you can contact Jacky in the office and she will make a booking for you.

Book Character & Rainbow Diversity Day!

Get excited because Student Council and Diversity Group are teaming up to bring you an exciting, new mufti day. Just like we did in term 1 when we did “Purple day and Lots Of Socks day’ we are combining our fundraising efforts to support the Child Cancer Foundation and Qtopia. We are giving you the option of wearing the book character costume that you didn’t get to wear during lockdown, or dressing up in something rainbow coloured to support the LGBTQ+ community and celebrate diversity. It is a fundraiser so it would be greatly appreciated if everyone could bring a gold coin donation. The day that this will be on is Friday the 3rd of December.

A Beckenham Kindy Announcement

We are sad to announce that after 23 years at Beckenham Kindy Helen Peters is retiring.  Helen’s compassion and wisdom has been an amazing asset to the kindy.  She has helped countless kids settle into kindy and find a place of belonging.

If you have any stories, pictures or words of thanks for Helen we are going to collate these into a book.  Please send these to rach.boulton@gmail.com by the 14 Dec with the childs name and the last year they attended kindy.

We are also collecting a koha to get something special for Helen.  If you would like to contribute, drop to George at Kindy or Rachel at 116 Fisher Ave, or contact the email address above.

Reminder: School will be Closed next Friday - Canterbury Anniversary Day

We were grateful for the fine weather today that enabled us to have our Celebration Assembly outside. The children have quickly adapted to the outside assemblies and we enjoyed sharing in the successes of a number of our students. A large number of Citizen of the Week certificates were given out, most from last term when we hadn't had assemblies. Strong themes that ran through the awards were kindness, respect, and being committed to doing their best. Congratulations to all!

We also celebrated the success of some of our Year 8 students who received Gold Kete Badges and Academic Cups. Photos of these will be shared next week.

Vaccination Update

As you know, by 16th November, all adults who work or volunteer in any capacity on a school site in New Zealand, when children are present, must be vaccinated with at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination. We are well underway with gathering this information from our staff, and we appreciate the support of whānau involved who have also provided us with their vaccination details. This information is kept in a confidential register.

This week we have been advised by the Ministry of Education that we are also required to keep a register of COVID vaccination information for eligible students - ie, those aged 12 and over.
Next week Jacky will be emailing out a vaccine survey to whānau of all our eligible students requesting their vaccination information. Please be clear that there is NO suggestion that students must be vaccinated to attend school. The Ministries of Education and Health are wanting this information collected in the event that we have cases at school.

Year 5-8 Athletics Results

Our senior athletics day last week embodied our school value 'We get there together'. It started with a dedicated team of seniors arriving at school early to help get the park ready for the day ahead. We kicked off the day, as we usually do, with the mid-distance track event; an optional additional event taken on by those who are keen to take on the challenge of a longer run. This was followed by rotations of field events and the sprint heats.

Throughout the day, we were impressed by the way the children participated in the events and encouraged each other. We are really proud of the spirit with which they participated in the day's events. Some children were striving to achieve their best, some showed leadership by supporting the running of a rotation whilst others role-modeled 'getting involved and having a jolly good time while doing so'. One example of this was in a Year 8 sprint heat when, after starters orders, the line of children joined hands and skipped down the track. We loved seeing the children approach the day with positivity.

The day concluded with the sprint finals and the House Relay. The House Relay was an exceptionally exciting race with Tennyson and Waimea battling it out over the last few lengths. In the end it was Tennyson who took the win, with Waimea nanoseconds behind them.

A huge thank you to the parents who supported us with running this event and to the seniors who helped out either before, during or after the event.

Photos from Athletics Day have been posted to an album on our school FB page.

Year 5 Champions: Jack Sayer and Cammy Inglis
Year 6 Champions: Petal Lee and Cian Scott
Year 7 Champions: Lola Harris, Caitlin Mcintosh and Billy Murfin
Year 8 Champions: Cooper Reddecliffe, Zoe Clarke and Mahli Boreham

Some of our Year 7/8 students out on the Adventure Park today - how fabulous is that!

Sports uniforms - please return these to school

If your child has a sports uniform at home that is no longer needed, please return it. The only children who will still need their uniform are children involved in miniball (year 3/4), zone athletics, (Years 5 - 8) and Canterbury Duathlon, (Year 7/8). There is a returns box outside the library for sports uniforms.

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

The discovery of COVID cases in Christchurch this week has been an important reminder to all of us of the importance of us all following health & safety guidelines, scanning wherever we go, and getting vaccinated if eligible.

Please remember that face masks are required to be worn if adults need to come onto the school site for any reason. This includes coming into the office, or  when meeting after school with staff (who will also wear a face mask).
Please only come on-site if you are going to the office or to an after school meeting. We continue to request that you do not come into the hubs during the school day whilst children are around at Alert Level 2.

Staffing Update

Laura Williamson has decided to step down as Team Leader from the start of 2022, and we are delighted to announce that Anna Reid has been appointed as the new Team Leader of the Kōwhai (Year 3/4) team. We are still looking to appoint two more teaching staff for 2022 and once those appointments are confirmed, we will be able to confirm teaching teams.

Logging on to HERO

Your child's reports will be being published through HERO this year, so it is important that you are able to access this information.
It is difficult for us to get a clear picture of how many of you have successfully logged into HERO so far, or to know who are the people who might need a bit of extra help. If you have not yet managed to log onto HERO, PLEASE call the office, or come into the office, and one of the staff will be very happy to walk you through the process. There is also a 'how to log onto HERO' guide here. You can use HERO on multiple devices: a smartphone, a tablet or a computer.

School Donations and Fees

A huge thank you to everyone who has already paid any outstanding fees, camp contributions and contributed towards the school donation.
To access your account, you need to log onto HERO.

A small number of items are fees and are required to be paid. These include stationery and uniform items, and payments for optional activities such as miniball.
Camp contributions support us to cover the cost of running camps. At the moment, we are taking quite a loss on running camps so every contribution is important - even if it is only a partial contribution to the camp cost.
Our Board have decided not to charge and itemise for each individual activity, but to ask instead for a once-a-year donation of $150 per child. This equates to $2.88 per week. This school donation covers a wide range of costs. We use this donation to support a wide range of curriculum activities including Swimming and Gymnastics costs (Years 1-4), Kapa Haka tutor, trips, visiting speakers, performers, coaches and educational supports (e.g.Life Education, drama groups etc) who come into the school.

To set up an automatic payment, or to make a one-off payment, please copy the school’s bank account number: 12-3148-0131641-00 into your internet banking and use your child’s name as the reference.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean-Up Week

This week is 'Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean Up Week'. Because this week is a short week, the goal will be to get our school cleaned up, looking amazing, and rubbish-free during Week 3.

Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the Year 5-8 Athletic Sports yesterday. More photos and full results will be coming out next week. A huge thanks to Jenny Diggle, staff and parent helpers for making sure that this event was so successful.
