The Sun

The hottest thing in our Solar System is the Sun. The biggest thing in the Solar System is the Sun. The coldest planet is Neptune.

The Super Sun

The Sun is 400 times farther away from us than the Moon. The Sun is about 150 million km from Earth. The Sun is a ball of fire and gas. The Sun is in the middle of our Solar System. I wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for the Sun. The Sun gives us light, heat, day and night. I love the Sun. The Sun is 5000 degrees C.

Space

There are planets called dwarf planets in the Solar System. Pluto is one of the dwarf planets. There are 4 more dwarf planets. There are 5 dwarf planets in total. The dwarf planets go round the Sun. So do the other planets. They are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Satin, Uranus and Neptune.  The reason why Pluto is not a planet anymore is because it got too small to be a planet. The Sun is made of gassy fire. Some people think that the Sun is yellow, but it is actually white.

The Sun

The Sun rises in the East and it sets in the West. I love how the sun sets and rises. The planets orbit the sun. There are eight planets; Mercury, Venus. Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus.

The Earth

The Earth is the planet we live on. We are lucky we live on Earth because there aren't many storms. The sun is a very hot star. The sun might burn us if we don't put sunscreen on all the time. Earth is a very beautiful planet. Me and Torun like learning about planets. I love, love, love learning about planets. When I wasn't even born, Pluto was named a dwarf planet.

The Solar System

What is the first planet? Mercury, or Venus, or Uranus, or Neptune, or Saturn, or Jupiter, or Mars? Which planet is the first one? Mercury!
What is the second planet from the sun? Venus.
What is the third planet from the sun? Earth.
What is the forth planet from the sun? Mars.
I like learning about the planets.

Kahikatea Newsetter Term 3 Week 10

Term 3
We are at the end of an extremely fun-filled and busy term. A huge thank you to the children for their hard work and great attitude. Also, thank you to the parent helpers who help out in a variety of ways. We couldn't do it without you! Have a well-deserved break and we look forward to Term 4.

Centenary
The children have been working hard on learning their dance routine for our Beckenham School Centenary. This will be held at school on Saturday 24th October from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Your child will have received a letter outlining their dance in more detail. If they have not received this, please let your child's teacher know.

Statistics
These last two weeks have been focussed around statistics in our maths programme. We have been discussing how to collect, collate and make a statement about data. We have also been discussing probability. Here are the children hard at work figuring out the likelihood of pairs in a pack of cat and dog cards:

Plays
Hub 3&4 have been focussing on plays for reading this week and have been performing them over the last two days. The children were learning how to use their voice, facial expressions and body to perform effectively. They also focussed on how to be a great team member and audience member. Here are some photos of two performances:

Home Learning
Home Learning books will stay at school over the holidays and spelling will resume on Friday in the first week of term.

Rugby World Cup
We have been starting our investigations into our RWC teams and even had a delicious treat from South Africa in Hub 3&4:

Kahikatea Newsletter Term 3 Week 9

Reading Programme

Next week, Hub 3 and 4 are practising plays in place of their usual readers. Children will be practising one play for the whole week. Please practise these at home also.

Centenary Performances

As you will be aware the children in the Kahikatea team have been practising dances. We will be performing these dances at the Beckenham School Centenary. This will be held at school on Saturday 24th October from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.. It would be wonderful if all students could come along and enjoy this exciting celebration and perform their dance on this day.
A notice will be coming home next week about what your children will need to wear for their dance. The dances are coming together very nicely. it has been great so many children have been practicing at home.

Science Alive

The children had a wonderful time engaging in the Science Alive fun. The children planned and built wonderful houses out of Duplo. A lot of thought was put into making the houses strong, and making good choices about where to put the rooms and furniture. Thank you so much for all the parent support we had. It made it a really successful session.

Print Making Update

Print making will be displayed for the start of next term. The calendar art is looking outstanding. We can't wait to get it on display.

The Reverse Report

The Reverse report has some very interesting news and facts all based around good news... not bad news. Check out the website if you're interested.

Rugby World Cup

At assembly each class was asked to pull out a rugby ball with the name of country on it. This is to support the rugby world cup.
Hub 1 and 2 are supporting Samoa
Hub 3 and 4 are supporting South Africa
We will be inquiring into their culture, food, songs, dances anything to do with their country.

Cake

Some of the children have been reading the story 'How to make a Happy Cake'. Look at the wonderful happy cake that was shared with Hub 1 and 2. It is so wonderful to see children engaged in their reading.
