Kahikatea News Term 2 Week 3

Kia ora e te whānau,

We had a great week with our tamariki despite some challenging weather and the Cross Country and School Disco being postponed. We would like to thank you for your understanding.

Nuts / nut-based products at school

This is another reminder that the Kahikatea team has students with nut allergies, one of these is life-threatening. Therefore, we are asking that nuts and nut-based products are NOT brought to school by your child. Nut-based products include items like Nutella, peanut butter, muesli bars containing nuts etc.

The team is also aware that some children may have other dietary requirements. Please talk with your child’s Homegroup teacher if this is the case so that they are aware and we can create a specific plan to support your child if need be.

Our policy at school is that children only eat their own food and not share. Teachers are reminding children about this, along with reminders about handwashing and putting food wrappings in their lunch boxes to take home.

If you have any questions please contact your child's Homegroup teacher.

Thank you for your support as 'We Get There Together'.

Music unit

The children have been super excited and engaged with our Music unit, which has focused on various elements of music, and different types of musical instruments. Most tamariki have designed and made their own instrument and today finished these by decorating them. Children who have been absent due to illness will have an opportunity to work on this next week.

On Monday, there will be a percussion performance called 'Strike to School' at our kura. We will get to see how people use body percussion and handmade instruments to create music.

Cross Country
We have re-scheduled our Junior Cross Country event to be on Tuesday 16th May. Children will gather on the park at 2pm and the races will start shortly after, starting with Year 4 and finishing with Year 0/1.

Please feel free to come along and support your child/ren if you are able. Tamariki may wear their house tops on this day. Please ensure that they are wearing appropriate footwear.

Thank you for your support!

Learning Through Play
This term, we have continued to explore and engage in different activities for Learning Through Play, including water play, body movements with music, chalk art, drawing using Arts for Kids Hub videos, and so on. The children have had lots of fun!

Have a lovely weekend!

Kōwhai News Term 4 Week 1

Kia ora e te whānau,

We had a lovely start to Term 4 this first week back. We hope you had a pleasant and relaxing holiday in the beautiful weather.

Hats

Now that summer is fast approaching, we need to make sure that we are SunSmart. Please make sure your child comes to school with a sunhat every day. If they don't wear a hat outside during break times, they will need to go to a designated area and stay in the shade.

SwimSafe Programme

We are excited to join the SwimSafe programme provided by Pioneer in weeks 3 and 4 this term (from 31st October to 10th November). It will run every day for these two weeks from 1pm to 3pm.

Please go through this social story with your child so that they know the expectations for when they go to Pioneer. It is also highly recommended that they practise getting changed at home to help the programme run smoothly.

Athletics

Our tamariki have been practising and showing our school values wonderfully at athletics practice. The main event will be on Wednesday 26th October, starting at 11am, weather permitting. The postponement date is Friday 28th October.

Please make sure your child has a named drink bottle, sunhat and spare change of clothes (if needed) on the day.

Discovery

We have been having fun with Discovery activities this week, including making corn flour slime, bug spotting, play dough and so on.

Welcome Assembly

We had a whole school Welcome Assembly today. Nau mai, haere mai ki Beckenham te Kura o Pūroto. A warm welcome to our new students and whānau! :-)

We wish you a lovely long weekend.

Ngā mihi nui.

Kōwhai News Term 3 Week 7

Kia ora koutou /  Mālō e lelei

Happy Tongan Language Week!

Kōwhai Talent Quest

Some of our tamariki have been rehearsing for the Kōwhai Talent Quest which will be held sometime at the end of term. It will be a wonderful opportunity for them to perform and the most striking performances will have the chance to perform at one of our Junior Celebration Assemblies.

Ukulele/Recorder

We will be finishing our ukulele and recorder lessons next week. Kōwhai children have done exceptionally well to learn a new instrument with our wonderful music teachers, Roger and Josie.

Discovery

Last Thursday, we had an amazing open-air concert at Discovery. Check out the photos below:

We have also been putting out a compliment box for everyone to write kind messages to other people in our hub. Anna read some of them out during our team hui and we have seen a lot of lovely reactions.

Maths

We have been learning about probability and chance over the last two weeks. Here is a cool game called The Sludger that you can play with your child and practise thinking about the likelihood of something happening.

Junior Celebration Assembly

Congratulations to those who received their Kete certificate and/or Citizen of the Week award at our assembly last week.

Cyber Safety

This week, we have started our Cyber Safety unit for Inquiry. The children have enjoyed learning about keeping our online identity and private information safe.

Have a lovely weekend!

Kōwhai News Term 2 Week 5

Kia ora e te whānau / Talofa lava,

Happy Samoan Language Week! / Manuia le vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa!

We have enjoyed learning a few Samoan phrases and greetings this week. Did you know that there is an ancient pyramid in Sāmoa?

Discovery

We have been continuing to do a lot of purposeful Learning Through Play activities such as Stop Motion Animation, making our own Top Trump cards and creating world flags.

Mask Reminder

Please remember to send your child to school with a named mask each day, as we have now run out of child-sized masks. Please also encourage them to re-use and look after their masks to make sure we are staying environmentally friendly.

Frost Dragon Spelling Book

We sent this home last term as something you can use to practise reading and spelling at home with your child. It is a valuable resource for revisiting what they have been learning at school. Please make sure to use it when you can.

Please contact your child's homegroup teacher if you would like to have another copy or would like information on which stage your child is at for Structured Literacy.
