Cantamath:

By now your child should be underway with their Cantamath Project. We have had a number of conversations recently with children who needed some help to decide on their project. Encourage your child to see us urgently if they are yet to get underway with an idea. A reminder that this project is done at home and that it is due next Friday, August 13th.

Duathlon:

This event is taking place next Tuesday afternoon. The sign-up form is on the Kauri Google Classroom.

Ski trip:

Many thanks to the 46 people who have filled in the ski trip form. We need everyone to complete this form, so if you are one of the 74 yet to do it, please click here.

Leadership Awards:

At our assembly this Friday, starting at 12 noon, we will be presenting a large number of leadership awards. It is particularly exciting to be able to present gold awards, to those students who have earned 400 leadership points. At the start of term 2, we presented gold awards to: Ava, Grace, Zara M, Zoe C, Jonty and Molly. This Friday we will be presenting gold to Rosie, Tabea, Marcellus and Jayda.

Sports News:

Congratulations to Jenni's hockey team and Cory's netball team who have qualified for Canterbury Winter Tournament. This is held on the 26th of August. Hockey is playing at Nunweek Park and netball at Hagley Netball Courts.

On Monday this week, our volleyball and basketball players competed in the Canterbury Indoor Tournament. We were so proud of the sportsmanship and positivity displayed by all three of our teams who competed. We were also very proud of their achievements. Our volleyball team and our boys' basketball team were placed 4th. Our girls' basketball had a clean sweep finishing in first place! A big thanks to Cory, Jamie and Anna who coached and supported our basketball teams.

  • Key dates for term 3

Cantamath Projects

Over the next three weeks all Kauri children have a home learning project to work on. Today, Monday, we introduced them to Cantamath projects. Ideas have been shared on a slideshow, which they can access at home on google classroom, and each child has brought an assignment sheet home (or will bring this home on Tuesday). The children select one project category to enter. They have been given three weeks, as it will take this long to do a good job. If by Friday they have not got an idea underway, please encourage them to speak with their maths teacher for some help.

Ski Day

Our ski day to Mt Hutt is on Thursday September 2nd. Please click this link and complete the form so we can support whānau to ensure every child is well prepared for their day in the mountains. We will be leaving school by 6am and return at 6pm. More information will come out in following posts.

Choice Programme

From weeks 3 - 5 we will be working through the 'Choice' programme, in class and with our community constable. Choice is a programme that aims to strengthen young people’s ability to make positive life choices with special emphasis on drug use.

Speeches

A single word that strikes excitement in some and fear in others: speeches. Starting in week 2, we will be working with the children to write a persuasive speech. In week 6 these speeches will be shared in literacy groups. We are aware that this may cause anxiety for some children. While we strongly encourage the children to share their speech with their literacy group, no child will be forced to do so and we have other options for sharing. We look forward to supporting the children in taking on this challenge.

A message from Cahsmere High School

2022 Year 9 enrolments for Cashmere High School close at 4pm, 30 July 2021. Late applications received after this date may not receive their first choice academic options. Please share this information with friends and family.

This message is for everyone who has entered the student council KidsCan fun run.

Firstly, thanks so much for taking part. We have about 150 people signed up to run, including some parents. Hopefully, you have managed to get some sponsors on your sponsor card.

The fun run is this Friday. We will be running laps around the park. The course will be marked out with the house flags. We will all meet in front of the cricket pavilion at 12 noon for instructions. Every time you run past the cricket pavilion we will make a pen mark on your hand or arm. The run goes for 30 minutes. It is ok to walk when you get puffed. Keep moving to get as many laps as you can. We will have a warm-up before the run and a cool-down afterwards.

After the run, please collect your sponsorship money, bring it to school and put it in the purple fun run collection box that will be at the office. We’d love to get all money in before the end of the term.

Thanks for making a difference for KidsCan. See you ready to run on Friday.

More details on clothing requirements will come out early next term.

    Current Learning Focus

We are aware that some children come home full of news about their school day and what they have been learning about. There are also a lot of children who do not do this. Just to keep you in the loop, our current learning includes:

    • Literacy. We are currently integrating science with writing. Each Monday we do an experiement and during the week we write up the method, results, explanation, conclusion, wider world implications and wonderings. Last week we learnt about acids and bases and ph indicators.
    • Maths. Earlier this term we have been exploring the geometry of triangles, and position and orientation (navigating maps, grid references etc.). We have recently started a new topic on proportion and ratio, initially exploring fractions. The children also complete a weekly basic facts challenge.
    • Positive behaviour for learning. Recently we have been talking about gender as part of Pride Month and also discussing issues around social media.
    • Afternoon programme. Earlier in the term we have had a visual art and music focus. Last week we started another 'Learn, Create, Share' block, with the children selecting their own learning focus. They are working towards sharing their learning at the end of week 1 next term.

    Treaty of Waitangi Workshops

At the beginning of Term 2, students in our hub were lucky enough to participate in a series of Treaty of Waitangi workshops. These workshops were a fantastic introduction into the history of Aotearoa and understanding the journey our country has been on. Together with our regular te reo lessons, students are feeling inspired to normalise our native language through speaking, singing and incorporating tikanga practices into their daily lives. Here are some of the photos of our tamariki getting involved and stuck into learning activities.
