Youth Community Awards

Lucy with her Youth Community Award

Lucy and her mum with the Youth Community Award

On Monday 1st July Lucy, a year 8 student at Beckenham, was awarded a Youth Community Award from the Waihoro/Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board. Lucy contributes to the community in a variety of ways. Four years ago, Lucy and a group of like-minded friends founded Beckenham School Global Group. This is a student group deeply interested in learning about the environment and issues to ensure the sustainability of the planet. Lucy is also the Chairperson of the Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto Student Council, after previously being a class representative. Lucy volunteered to be the coordinator for the Christchurch School Strike for Climate (SS4C) event held on 15th March 2019 and worked to find connections with like-minded students and developed the local SS4C team. Lucy is now a member of the SS4C National Team.
Congratulations Lucy!

Dental Service Visit in Term 3

One of our Community Dental Service vans will be making a visit to your school soon.
 Only the children who currently require a check-up will be seen at this visit.
Please do not be concerned if your child is not called for a check-up this time.
 The dental therapist will provide regular check-ups and preventative care which may include:

Cleaning/Scaling (to remove plaque from teeth)
Dental x-rays (to check for decay in teeth, or presence and position of teeth)
Fluoride Varnish (painted on teeth to help prevent decay)
Fissure Sealants (coating put on teeth to prevent decay) if required.

 If your child requires any other dental care, they will bring home a ‘Care Plan’ which will explain
what dental care and appointment times are required.
 When you receive the ‘Care Plan’ please contact our Call Centre as soon as possible as you will
need to arrange a time to bring your child to one of our Community Clinics for this dental care.
 Please contact our Call Centre if you want further information on the Community Dental Service, to enrol your child or if you have any specific questions about your child’s dental care (a dental
therapist will call you back)
 Year 8 students: all year 8 students enrolled with the Community Dental Service are transferred
from the Community Dental Service to a FREE private dentist from year 9 until their 18th birthday.
To help with this transition please ensure you have informed your child of their family dentist (not
orthodontist). This will enable us to transfer your child onto the correct dentist for year 9 onwards.
More information will be sent home after their year 8 check-up.

To contact our Call Centre: phone 0800 846 983 / email commdental@cdhb.health.nz

We Care Day

Our We Care Day on the 27th of June led to much laughter, smiles and positive feelings!  Each hub undertook activities focused on showing kindness to others. Some children created role plays showing kindness, while others got creative and made cards, posters or cooked items to share. We also worked on identifying what was special about our peers and paying compliments to others. Showing we care for ourselves and others is a key part of Beckenham Te Kura, and it is important for our wellbeing, or hauora.

Hillview Cross Country Challenge

On Tuesday 2nd July, approximately 30 children from Y0 - 4 went to compete in the Hillview Cross Country Challenge. There were over 380 students from 17 different schools competing on the day and we were spoilt with the wonderful weather. The children confidently demonstrated our school value, ‘We Love Challenge’ in the way they all did their personal best and it was great to see them encouraging and supporting each other as they raced. Thank you to all the parents who assisted on the day by walking down and supporting the children when they were not competing. our recent invite to Hillview Cross-country went spectacularly! Out of the 30 runners who went from our school many of them placed in the top 10-12 out of approximately 45 - 50+ other runners for each grade!
