Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

A reminder to all that this Monday the 19th of September, the school will be CLOSED to all students, while our kaimahi (staff) participate in a Staff Only Day of professional learning and development. We will be continuing to develop our understanding of  "Trauma Informed Practice", as well as working on moderation of assessment, use of HERO and preparation for end-of-year reports.

From Wednesday to Friday of this last week, I was at our new conference centre, Te Pai, attending the annual New Zealand Principals' Federation Conference with over 860 other primary principals from around New Zealand. It was a huge privilege to be able to host this event in Christchurch for the first time in over 12 years, and to be able to showcase our amazing new convention centre and increasingly re-built city. We were challenged by numerous speakers, including a youth panel that included past-student, Lucy Gray, to consider the impacts and reach of our leadership. Each speaker gave us a new 'wero' or challenge to strive for better outcomes in terms of equity, excellence, inclusion, sustainability and wellbeing.

We are delighted to welcome Megan Harris back onto our staff. Megan was a teacher in our Year 7/8 team a number of years ago, and has recently returned from a time in Dunedin. Megan is currently working in the Kahikatea team.

Q&A Evening - Y8 Cashmere Bound Ākonga

We welcome all whānau of Year 8 Cashmere enrolled ākonga (students) for 2023 to join us for the opportunity to meet with Cashmere High School Principal, Joe Eccleton. The idea of this meeting is to provide whānau and ākonga the opportunity to ask questions in a smaller group as opposed to the larger Year 8 Parents Evening hosted at Cashmere later in the year.

ECO Warriors Kids Club

A big mihi (acknowledgment) to our little people getting together during their lunch break to ensure we look after te taiao (the environment/natural world) by picking up rubbish around our kura!

Crossing Tennyson St safely

Whānau please talk to your tamariki who are coming to school by crossing over Tennyson Street by the end of Norwood Street.  Please reiterate to them that the safety island is NOT a pedestrian crossing.  Cars are not required to stop for them when they are in the safety island; they need to look both ways before crossing the road if they are in this safety island.
There was a near miss this week due to a student presuming a car would stop and not looking properly before crossing from the island.

Community Dental Service - Clinics open in October School Holidays

Priority for Community Dental Service appointments during the school break will be for immediate dental needs at the following clinics:
  • Woolston Community Dental Clinic, 11 Hopkins Street, Christchurch
  • Hornby Community Dental Clinic, 2 Hei Hei Road, Christchurch
  • Timaru Community Dental Clinic, 18 Woollcombe Street, Timaru
To access these appointments, call our Contact Centre on 0800 846 983 noting that priority is given to children with immediate dental needs.

For any dental advice please call the Contact Centre on 0800 846 983 or email commdental@cdhb.health.nz

New long-term strategy for COVID-19

You’ll be aware that New Zealand will move to a new, long-term approach to COVID-19. These changes have been made based on public health advice and reflect high levels of immunity and declining case numbers across New Zealand.

This new approach will only result in minor changes to the way we operate.

The good news is that only people who test positive need to isolate for 7 days and that household contacts of a person with COVID-19 do not need to isolate, but instead are asked to complete a RAT test each day, for five days. Therefore, ākonga who are household contacts but test negative and do not have COVID-19 symptoms, should continue to attend. It is the best place for them to be so they can be engaged in their learning, and connected with their teachers, classmates and friends.

Information on how to get RAT kits can be found here: Request a RAT– Ministry of Health

Mask wearing is no longer required. If you or your child would still like to wear a mask for your protection, you are very welcome to do that.

All the other recommended public health measures will stay in place as we know they reduce the spread of infectious illnesses including COVID-19. These include ensuring our indoor spaces are well-ventilated, maintaining good hand hygiene, encouraging everyone to cough or sneeze into elbows and, most importantly, staying home and getting tested if they have COVID-19 symptoms.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Chewies

All humans have sensory needs that we regulate throughout the day. A great way for some children to gain the feedback they need is via the oral/motor sensory system. If your child tends to chew/suck on clothing, fingers, ends of pencils etc, or if your child tends to lack concentration or becomes restless during the day, a chewy could be a great sensory tool. Chewies are mobile, they are fun and child friendly, and can help organize, calm, soothe, and regulate their sensory systems. We have a stock of chewies at the office and are selling them for $8:00 each.

Netball - Year 7/8 Canterbury Winter Sport

On Thursday, one of the year 7/8 netball teams traveled to Hagley Park to compete in the Canterbury Winter Tournament. They were up against 31 different schools and came 5th overall. We are so proud of the sportsmanship shown by this team, not only to each other but to their opponents as they represent our kura. A huge thank you to Cory Harris who has dedicated his own time to coaching this time through both this tournament and our South Zone Winter Sport Competition.
