Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto Newsletter Friday 7th May

Principal's Patch

Kia ora koutou

Welcome back. It has been so good to see everyone back this term, and to be amazed at how much some of our children have grown over just the two weeks of the holidays!

A special welcome to all of the new students and families who have joined our school this week. We had 10 New Entrants start this week, with more to come over the term ahead. We love welcoming our new staff, students and their families at our Welcome Assembly each term, and this morning was no exception.

New Building

We can see lots of progress happening on our new classroom block with the roof going on during this week. We are advised that HRS are currently on track to hand over on the agreed date of Thursday 22nd July, ready for the start of Term 3. This is very exciting news as our New Entrant numbers continue to grow.

It has been lovely to see you embracing challenges in your learning and showing such great teamwork spirit. Ka mau te wehi, Alex!

School Notices

Food Allergy Guidelines

Across our school, we have a number of children with different food allergies.
To support the wellbeing of these students we have the following guidelines in place which we ask you to follow:
  • Whenever children bring food to school for shared kai occasions, please follow the guidelines provided by the teachers for that event.
We will inform you during the year if specific guidelines for your child’s hub change.  Our full allergy policy and guidelines in this booklet, are also available on the Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto website under “Information - Policies - SchoolDocs” then search ‘allergy’.  If you have any questions or concerns, please discuss them in the first instance with your child’s point of contact teacher.

School Cross Country

Our whole school cross country is next Tuesday afternoon, May 11th.
We would love to invite whānau to spectate this event.

Senior school races kick off the afternoon with the Year 8s starting shortly after 1:30. We then work down the year groups.
Junior races will not start before 2:15.

The children have been out practising this week and are becoming familiar with the course they will run. We are also having conversations around developing a positive mindset around participation in cross country. Success can look like many different things depending on the individual. We encourage the children to set goals for themselves based on running their own best race. This is something that you might like to discuss at home. Some potential goals could be:
- finishing the course
- maintaining a run for the whole way round
- pacing themselves so that can finish feeling strong

Children can wear their housetop on this day or may race in their red school polo. Wearing shoes that are comfortable to run in will be beneficial.

After their race, the children can see you for a quick celebration of their efforts and then should head back to their team's area to be supervised by a teacher. We would appreciate it if you can support the children in remembering this step.

If you are coming to spectate, please leave dogs at home as some children may be afraid of dogs.

ESOL

This week we were very pleased to welcome Charmaine, our new Teacher Aide, to our first ESOL lessons. Charmaine is taking over from Pip and Elizabeth.

Students worked on prepositions (under, over, between, across, in front, behind) and made paper helicopters to practise science concepts (flying, floating, falling etc)

BOSCO

With the upcoming Staff Only Days that will be happening on Friday 21st May and Tuesday 8th June, BOSCO can now be booked online on Aimy Plus for those dates, or they can contact Juanita at office@bosco.org.nz

A reminder that the school is closed to students on these dates.

Mana Ake “Drop-Ins” are continuing…

A number of whānau have already made great use of the Mana Ake “drop-ins” that are available on Wednesday mornings from 8:30 – 9:30am. These drop-in sessions are here to provide parents with an opportunity to have a private, informal conversation around the well being of their child with one of our Mana Ake workers (kaimahi). If you feel like you would like to attend a drop-in session, please book in a time via the link here: Mana Ake booking  The code to use is 88t39.
