Principal's Patch<\/h2>

Kia ora e te wh\u0101nau<\/h3>What a great start we have had to the term! It's been lovely to see everyone back and to welcome seven new tamariki and their wh\u0101nau to our school. Along with that, the sun has shone for much of the week!

Learning this term<\/b> includes preparations for athletics, P\u014dhutukawa Camp, Intermediate Hub Production, Firewise programme, and excursions out of school for all teams. On top of teaching, teachers will be busy with assessments and end of year report writing.

Organisation for 2019<\/b> is well underway too. As part of this organisation, we are looking at the learning groups for 2019. Because we work so collaboratively, this is a much less complex task than it was when we had teachers and children operating in individual classes in isolation from one another. We can support different social groupings within a collaborative team, without worrying about which 'class' a child in a team is in as the whole team will be working in collaborative space and the groupings will be be fluid and needs based.
If there is a consideration you would like me to be aware of when we are putting learning groups for 2019 together, please email me<\/a> by Friday 2nd November. We will add your considerations to the considerations we have for all of the children.

We are pleased to have two trainee teachers<\/b> working in our school at the moment. Lisa Griffiths is in the P\u014dhutokawa Hub being mentored by Tracy Inwood, and Alicia Northe is in the Kauri Hub being mentored by Hannah Elliott. We value the contribution that they make to our children's learning and we think it is important that our school and staff contribute to the ongoing development of the profession by having teacher trainees in our school.

We have a vacancy in the school office...<\/h3>Due to an unexpected offer of a job with more hours and more responsibility that she would have been crazy to turn down, our financial officer, Vicki Renwick, will be leaving us in four weeks.
As you will all be aware, the role of a financial officer is critical in the smooth running of a school!

Financial Officer - Beckenham Te Kura o P\u016broto<\/h4>Role Purpose<\/b>
This is a key administrative role in a progressive and busy, full primary school where efficiency, flexibility, collaboration and initiative are key attributes for success.  The support this role provides to the leadership team enables student learning to be upheld as the primary focus of the school. 
This role is responsible for ensuring all aspects of the school's financial management complies with sector best practice, defined delegated authorities, statutory requirements and policies.  By completing all financial administration tasks efficiently and effectively, this role assists the school to manage its resources competently and responsibly.

Fridays are House Shirt Days!<\/h3>
A reminder that children are able to wear House Shirts on Fridays, especially with the warmer weather approaching! House Shirts are available from the office. <\/div>
We have four houses in the school: Tennyson, Heathcote, Waimea and Fisher.<\/div>

Children are placed in a house when they start school and stay in that house all the way through their time in the school. Houses are a vehicle for helping children to engage in activities in a different grouping to their year, team or learning group, as each house includes children from every year group in the school. During the spring and summer terms, we have House\/Wh\u0101nau Games every second Friday. These games and activities are organised and run by our House Captains and Sports Captains. They provide a wonderful opportunity for children to buddy up with younger\/older students and build relationships across the school.

Hats are ESSENTIAL every day in Term 4 and Term 1<\/h3>

<\/div>Please ensure that your child has a school sunhat (red <\/b>or black <\/b>wide-brimmed or bucket style hat) at school every day. Bucket hats are available from the office. Wide-brimmed hats can be purchased from The Warehouse and other retail outlets.

Mana Ake - a new resource for schools to support the Mental Health and Wellbeing of children and their wh\u0101nau<\/h3>

<\/div>
<\/a><\/div>

<\/div>Mana Ake - Stronger for Tomorrow was established in March 2018 to promote wellbeing and positive mental health for children in school years 1-8 across Canterbury.  It was the result of additonal funding provided by the government in response to the ongoing effects on children of the Canterbury Earthquakes.

The initiative aims to provide early intervention and support for teachers, families and wh\u0101nau when children are experiencing ongoing issues that impact their wellbeing. The service can support individual children and groups of children and provide advice, guidance and support for teachers and parents\/ wh\u0101nau.

This term our school, along with the other primary schools in our Community of Learning (St Martins, Waltham, St Marks, Opawa, Diamond Harbour) will be working together to develop systems for accessing this resource. We will have a team of five dedicated 'kaimahi' - workers, who come from a range of NGO backgrounds involved in supporting mental health and wellbeing of children and families.

We are looking forward to being able to have these people able to engage with our children and families. If we think your child might benefit from some support through this resource, we will always discuss this with you first, and you will be able to decide if you feel this is appropriate for your child and family.

We are missing some sports uniforms - please bring them back to school!<\/h3>We are aware that a small number of sports uniforms in each of the different sports codes have not been returned to school at the end of the season. We desperately need these returned please, no questions asked! The PTA have been responsible for funding most of these uniforms and we need to have every one returned so that they are available for other children to use the following season.
Please return any items you may have still have at home to the school office next week! Thank you.<\/div>

Future of Education Seminar<\/h3>Frances Valintine, founder of MindLab, will be presenting about the Future of Education<\/b>, Tuesday 30 October, 5pm<\/b><\/span>. St Francis of Assisi School, Innes Road, Christchurch. This is for principals, teachers, board and PTA members, parents <\/b>and local businesses. RSVP here<\/a>.

The Great New Zealand Shake Out<\/h3>Yesterday we engaged as a school with the Great New Zealand Shakeout Earthquake Drill and Evacuation and the children were very calm and evacuated out onto the field with no fuss.

We are also able to take part in the Great NZ Shakeout School Challenge<\/b>.
Each person who completes the 8 challenges with their families will be in to get some cool prizes.
