Gifted and talented students require deliberate\u00a0consideration to help them reach their full potential and beyond. At Beckenham Te Kura o P\u016broto, students with exceptional abilities are supported in a variety of ways\u00a0both within a differentiated learning programme, the 3 principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and through a variety of enrichment groups.<\/p>\n<p>There are varying degrees of giftedness, academic, musical, leadership, creativity, sport, art and cultural.<\/p>\n<p>We identify students using a variety of tools and observations and may also include student, peer and parent identification. Once identified the student is placed on the Gifted &amp; Talented Register.\u00a0Beckenham Te Kura o P\u016broto\u00a0uses the register to ensure programmes are meeting the needs of these students.<\/p>\n<h2>Learning\u00a0Programmes<\/h2>\n<p>Hub\u00a0planning is modelled on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.udlcenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Universal Design for Learning<\/a>\u00a0principles. UDL provides a blueprint for\u00a0designing\u00a0learning\u00a0goals, teaching methods, materials, and assessments that work for everyone. It is a\u00a0flexible approach that can be customized for individual needs. For\u00a0gifted and talented students, UDL provides\u00a0opportunities for them to take their learning to a deeper level. In the Hub environment,\u00a0the needs of gifted and talented students may be catered for through the use of:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul\">\n<li>individual or small group contracts<\/li>\n<li>ability grouping<\/li>\n<li>thinking tools\u00a0such as SOLO Taxonomy<\/li>\n<li>inquiry\/passion\/discovery learning<\/li>\n<li>self-directed learning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Extension Groups<\/h2>\n<p>Gifted and talented students may also be invited to join\u00a0special extension\/enrichment groups.\u00a0These groups\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">give students\u00a0with exceptional abilities an opportunity to work with others who think and respond at the same level and in the same way they do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some extension\/enrichment groups offered are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul\">\n<li>Special extension\u00a0groups focusing on a common area of interest<\/li>\n<li>Leadership programme for Year 7\/8<\/li>\n<li>Te reo M\u0101ori extension<\/li>\n<li>Kapa Haka and\u00a0Te Wh\u0101nau Mahitahi<\/li>\n<li>Cantamath competition<\/li>\n<li>Literacy Quiz<\/li>\n<li>Choir and Special Choir<\/li>\n<li>Ukulele group<\/li>\n<li>Band training<\/li>\n<li>Music tuition<\/li>\n<li>Sport opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Drama Club<\/li>\n<li>Media Team<\/li>\n<li>Code Club<\/li>\n<li>Robotics\/Future Intech<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What does &#8216;Gifted and Talented&#8217; Mean?
